Measurement of temperature profiles in hot gases and flames

Computer program was written for calculation of molecular radiative transfer from hot gases. Shape of temperature profile was approximated in terms of simple geometric forms so profile could be characterized in terms of few parameters. Parameters were adjusted in calculations using appropriate radiative-transfer expression until best fit was obtained with observed spectra.

Recovery and radiation corrections and time constants of several sizes of shielded and unshielded thermocouple probes for measuring gas temperature

Performance characteristics were experimentally determined for several sizes of a shielded and unshielded thermocouple probe design. The probes are of swaged construction and were made of type K wire with a stainless steel sheath and shield and MgO insulation. The wire sizes ranged from 0.03- to 1.02-mm diameter for the unshielded design and from 0.16- to 0.81-mm diameter for the shielded design. The probes were tested through a Mach number range of 0.2 to 0.9, through a temperature range of room ambient to 1420 K, and through a total-pressure range of 0.03 to 0.2.2 MPa (0.3 to 22 atm). Tables and graphs are presented to aid in selecting a particular type and size. Recovery corrections, radiation corrections, and time constants were determined.

Middle atmosphere processes revealed by satellite observations

The present paper deals with satellite measurements carried out over the past decade, which include radiance measurements (closely associated with temperatures in the lower stratosphere), temperature measurements in the mesopause, and ozone distributions. Some information obtained from satellite data on chemical, dynamical, energy-balance, and transport processes is reviewed, and data suitable for testing dynamical and photochemical theories are noted.

Preliminary analysis of STS-2 entry flight data

A preliminary analysis of the data obtained during the entry of the STS-2 flight was completed. The stability and control derivatives from STS-2 were examined. Questions still remain throughout the flight envelope and the area below Mach 3 needs more study. With three controls operating in a high gain feedback system, it is difficult to separate the individual effects of each of the controls. Analysis of the aerothermal data shows that wing structural-temperature measurements are generally repeatable and consistent with the trajectories. The measured wing upper surface temperatures are in reasonable agreement with Dryden predictions but wing lower surface temperatures are higher than Dryden predictions. Heating and heat transfer models will be adjusted to improve the temperature prediction capability for future trajectories.

An experimental investigation of interfacial temperatures in blade-seal material rubbing of aircraft compressors

Results are presented for the rubbing of rotating (100 m/s) titanium blade specimens, with different plasma-sprayed tip coating, against an abradable porous seal material at two different incursion rates. In general, there was a good correspondence between the average transverse force of rubbing and the seal specimen surface temperature. Instantaneous seal surface temperature measurement showed a significant temperature jump before and after each rubbing with a high rate of cooling during each revolution and a high overall temperature level. Numerical predictions of both blade and seal temperature agreed well for the bare blade tip experiments but were consistently high for the coated blades. This suggests that the thermal properties of the coatings may significantly affect the temperatures and hence the wear characteristics of the system.

Review of the NASA Voyager spacecraft polycarbonate capacitor failure incident

The premission failure of a Voyager spacecraft capacitor has prompted an investigation into the use of polycarbonate capacitors in high impedance circuits, during which capacitor failures were induced by thermal cycling together with extended periods at high temperature. Measurement of leakage path temperature coefficients indicates that there are two distinct leakage types whose mechanisms are complicated by movement within the capacitor during temperature changes. A novel system for pulse detection during capacitor burn-in and ramp testing has proven to be beneficial.

Equatorial thermospheric measurements of temperatures and winds at Arequipa, Peru

Enhancement of FPI temperatures above quiet levels was observed a few hours after the start of magnetic activity. Magnitude of this enhancement is about 300 degrees. This is followed by relaxation to prestorm levels. Apparent average offset of RPI temperatures from mass spectrometer incoherent scatter radar by 100 to 200 degrees for relatively quiet times is also observed. There was a definite suggestion of a midnight thermal enhancement for April and August data, with a magnitude of about 100 degrees, seen in both 1983 and 1984 observations. There was a definite enhancement of 6300A surface brightness in the south as compared with other directions, probably connected to the tropical airglow arcs. Meridional winds were small (less than 25 m/s) throughout night. Indication of northward migration of the observed 6300A enhancement in the evening hours as observations approach local winter solstice. This is probably related to the observed poleward (to the south) meridional wind (of magnitude 50 m/s) in this period. Zonal component of winds always eastward, but speed approaches zero sooner near equinox than at summer solstice. Typical magnitude at peak is of order 100 to 150 m/s. Suggestion of zonal wind increase after twilight and recovery of 6300A emission for April data. Origin not clear but may be related to midnight thermal enhancement. Meridional wind virtually zero for equinox in 1983; shows evening flow towards winter hemisphere in early evening for solstice data. Suggestion of post-midnight surge in April 1984 data. No major effects associated with magnetic storm activity, but a suggestion of decrease in zonal component below nominal levels.

Computation of full-coverage film-cooled airfoil temperatures by two methods and comparison with high heat flux data

Two methods were used to calculate the heat flux to full-coverage film cooled airfoils and, subsequently, the airfoil wall temperatures. The calculated wall temperatures were compared to measured temperatures obtained in the Hot Section Facility operating at real engine conditions. Gas temperatures and pressures up to 1900 K and 18 atm with a Reynolds number up to 1.9 million were investigated. Heat flux was calculated by the convective heat transfer coefficient adiabatic wall method and by the superposition method which incorporates the film injection effects in the heat transfer coefficient. The results of the comparison indicate the first method can predict the experimental data reasonably well. However, superposition overpredicted the heat flux to the airfoil without a significant modification of the turbulent Prandtl number. The results suggest that additional research is required to model the physics of full-coverage film cooling where there is significant temperature/density differences between the gas and the coolant.

AM0 efficiency measurements

Procedures for measuring the air mass zero (AM0) current versus voltage characteristics and calculating the efficiency are discussed. The various factors influencing the determination of the efficiency include the I-V measurement system, reference cell calibration, standard reporting conditions, area measurement, light source characteristics, temperature measurement and control, and the measurement procedures. Each of these sources contributes to the precision index and bias limit which is combined to obtain the total uncertainty in the efficiency. These factors are discussed as well as how to minimize differences in the reported AM0 efficiency of a given PV cell between various laboratories.
