End-Use Load Profiles for the U.S. Building Stock: Practical Guidance on Accessing and Using the Data

This report describes example applications and considerations for using the National Renewable Energy Lab’s ResStock and ComStock end use load profiles (EULP). The report begins with an introduction to the three year project, and then provides instructions on accessing the EULP data and considerations for using the EULP and limitations of the data. The remainder of the report is on EULP use cases, including a variety of electricity planning use cases.

End-Use Load Profiles for the U.S. Building Stock: Practical Guidance on Accessing and Using the Data

End-use load profiles (EULP), which quantify how and when energy is used, are critically important to utilities, public utility commissions, state energy offices, and other stakeholders. Applications of EULPs focus on understanding how efficiency, demand response, and other distributed energy resources are valued and used in R&D prioritization, utility resource and distribution system planning, and state and local energy planning and regulations. Consequently, high-quality EULPs are critical for widespread adoption of electrification, demand flexibility, and grid-interactive efficient buildings. For example, EULPs can be used to forecast energy savings in buildings or to identify energy using activities that can be shifted to different times of the day.

Field Test Best Practices

This report can be used as a resource for advice on every stage of field research in residential buildings. It can be used as a reference document to find descriptions of specific types of common measurements and tricks of the trade, or as a primer on home field research providing a basic education on the subject. The report begins with descriptions of field experiment design and discusses advantages and disadvantages of different types of data acquisition systems. The bulk of the paper describes the common measurements needed in residential field work, the hardware options for making the measurements, and field notes on with tips, tricks, and cautions.

Towards Practical Quantum Simulation for High Energy Physics (Final report for DE-SC0019452)

Quantum computing offers the potential of transformative improvements in our ability to simulate strongly interacting quantum systems. Each application area of quantum simulation requires careful study and new insights to determine the potential advantages of quantum computation. In particular, high energy physics and quantum field theory present specific challenges to existing approaches. In this project we studied quantum simulation in the light-front formulation of quantum field theory. In this formulation, quantum field theory more closely resembles other many-body quantum systems such as quantum chemistry, which are well studied from the perspective of quantum computation. We considered applications suitable for both near term and future error-corrected quantum computers.

Practical Multi-Cycle Refueling Simulation of Stable Salt Reactors Based on REBUS Depletion Calculation

A Python software tool ReloadPy has been developed to assistant in formulating online refueling strategies for a family of stable salt reactors. ReloadPy wraps over the legacy fast reactor analysis codes REBUS, DIF3D, and PERSENT. These codes are used to perform single cycle depletion analysis and calculate reactivity worth and power density. ReloadPy determines a refueling assembly position to achieve the user-specified primary objective while satisfying constraints on various performance parameters such as the maximum power density, the maximum reactivity worth of reloaded assembly, and the minimum cycle length. Various capabilities of prescribing refueling sequence or a range of candidate refueling positions and restarting a previous simulation with altered options are implemented to reduce the required user’s efforts to investigate different refueling strategies. This report presents the computational models and methods and also serves as a user guide. Long-term simulation capabilities with different refueling strategies are demonstrated by a series of sample SSR refueling calculations with two-dimensional surrogate core models.
