Fundamentals of Polymer Crystallization in Laser Powder Bed Fusion for New Material Screening

Although laser powder bed fusion (PBF/LB) was one of the first industrially viable additive manufacturing (AM) methods for end-use part production, polyamides remain grossly dominant at both the commercial- and researchscale. The research community continues to develop and refine “rapid screening” methods for evaluating the suitability of a new polymer for PBF/LB. The so-called “SLS Process Window,” which is the difference between melting and crystallization temperature measured at 10 K min-1 as originally outlined in the patent literature, is perhaps the most often reported screening method. Although perhaps appropriate as part of a larger study, the simplistic guidelines put forth by the “SLS Process Window” are not sufficiently scientifically rigorous to understand how crystallization kinetics affects successful 3D printing. The common understanding of the SLS Process Window omits details from published theories of polymer crystallization. as evidenced by published assumptions and methods in PBF/LB process modeling papers. The authors explain polymer crystallization in the PBF/LB process context and propose replacing the “process window” with crystallization halftime and physical gelation for new material screening. These measurements better represent behavior critical for ensuring a lengthy coexistence of solid powder and molten polymer affecting warp-free parts.

Benzo[d]thiazole Based Wide Bandgap Donor Polymers Enable 19.54% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Along with Desirable Batch-to-Batch Reproducibility and General Applicability

The limited selection pool of high-performance wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors is a bottleneck problem of the nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic solar cells (OSCs) that impedes the further improvement of their photovoltaic performances. In this work, a series of new WBG polymers, namely PH-BTz, PS-BTz, PF-BTz, and PCl-BTz, are developed by using the bicyclic difluoro-benzo[d]thiazole (BTz) as the acceptor block and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) derivatives as the donor units. By introducing S, F, and Cl atoms to the alkylthienyl sidechains on BDT, the resulting polymers exhibit lowered energy levels and enhanced aggregation properties. The fluorinated PBTz-F not only exhibits a low-lying HOMO level, but also has stronger face-on packing order and results in more uniform fibril-like interpenetrating networks in the related PF-BTz:L8-BO blend. A high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.57% is achieved. Moreover, PBTz-F also exhibits a good batch-to-batch reproducibility and general applicability. In addition, ternary blend OSCs based on the host PBTz-F:L8-BO blend and PM6 guest donor exhibits a further enhanced PCE of 19.54%, which is among the highest values of OSCs.

Mechanically and Thermally Robust Gel Electrolytes Built from A Charged Double Helical Polymer

Polymer electrolytes have received tremendous interest in the development of solid-state batteries, but often fall short in one or more key properties required for practical applications. Herein, a rigid gel polymer electrolyte prepared by immobilizing a liquid mixture of a lithium salt and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether with only 8 wt% poly(2,2′-disulfonyl-4,4′-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT) is reported. The high charge density and rigid double helical structure of PBDT lead to formation of a nanofibrillar structure that endows this electrolyte with stronger mechanical properties, wider temperature window, and higher battery rate capability compared to all other poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes. The ion transport mechanism in this rigid polymer electrolyte is systematically studied using multiple complementary techniques. Li/LiFePO 4 cells show excellent capacity retention over long-term cycling, with thermal cycling reversibility between ambient temperature and elevated temperatures, demonstrating compelling potential for solid-state batteries targeting fast charging at high temperatures and slower discharging at ambient temperature.

Solution–Processable Thermally Crosslinked Organic Radical Polymer Battery Cathodes

Organic radical polymers are promising cathode materials for next-generation batteries because of their rapid charge transfer and high cycling stability. However, these organic polymer electrodes gradually dissolve in the electrolyte, resulting in capacity fade. Several crosslinking methods have been developed to improve the performance of these electrodes, but they are either not compatible with carbon additives or compromise the solution processability of the electrodes. A one-step post-synthetic, carbon-compatible crosslinking method was developed to effectively crosslink an organic polymer electrode and allow for easy solution processing. The highest electrode capacity of 104 mAh g –1 (vs. a theoretical capacity of 111 mAh g –1 ) is achieved by introducing 1 mol % of the crosslinker, whereas the highest capacity retention (99.6 %) is obtained with 3 mol % crosslinker. In addition, mass transfer was observed in situ by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. Furthermore, these results may guide future electrode design toward fast-charging and high-capacity organic electrodes.

Impact of hydrogen bonding pendant groups in polymer grafted nanoparticles on interlayer adhesion and mechanical properties in material extrusion printing

The addition of nanoparticles or copolymer grafted nanoparticles (CPGNPs) to polymeric matrices greatly improves thermomechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposite, but corresponding studies of nanocomposite systems created by 3D printing are few, especially in the realm of functional polymeric materials. Here we describe how silica nanoparticle-grafted, random copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate-random-2-uriedo-[1H]-pyrimidinone methacrylate) (P(MMA-r-UPyMA) dramatically increases the mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based nanocomposite specimens created by melt extrusion printing. Most notably, when these novel CPGNPs are combined with PMMA matrix chains via a solution-based process, printed specimens containing only 0.5 wt% additive show significant increases in Young’s modulus (90%), storage modulus (93%), tensile modulus (148%) and ultimate tensile strength (110%). These improvements are ascribed to strengthening of adhesion across interfaces due to multi-point hydrogen bonding between UPyMA groups, the reinforcement effect of the P(MMA-r-UPyMA)-grafted silica nanoparticles, as well as hydrogen bonding interactions and entanglements between graft and matrix chains. Imaging of fracture surfaces after tensile testing reveals that in comparison to nanocomposites created by simple mechanical mixing of solids, the solution-casting process improves the dispersion of nanoparticles and reduces the void spaces between printed roads. These studies demonstrate that introducing functionality into polymer grafts, such as hydrogen bonding interactions, and intimate mixing of polymer-modified nanomaterials can greatly improve interlayer adhesion and mechanical properties, thereby advancing this method of polymer additive manufacturing

An elastin-like polymer targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 reduces survival in serum-starved endothelial cells

Peptides often exhibit biological activity that depends on the context in which they are displayed and delivered. Understanding and controlling these contextual effects on peptide function is critical for designing targeted and responsive peptide-based biomaterials and therapeutics. Genetically engineered protein polymers such as elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) can incorporate bioactive peptide motifs and are attractive candidates for biomaterials used in tissue engineering and targeted drug delivery. They also present an opportunity for investigating and modulating cell signaling pathways by presenting a peptide ligand in various defined chemical and physical environments. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGFR1) signaling plays important and complex roles in cell survival and angiogenesis, but polymeric materials that interact with this signaling axis are scarce. In this study, a novel genetically engineered elastin-like polymer that targets VEGFR1 is characterized. This polymer, termed R1B-ELP, binds to human endothelial cells in a manner dependent on its VEGFR1-targeting motif and, based on cell proliferation and cytotoxicity assays, demonstrates activity consistent with disrupting pro-survival signaling necessary for endothelial cell function under conditions of environmental stress. Notably, these findings indicate that ELP fusion alters the functional behavior of the targeting peptide. Modulators of VEGFR1 signaling have potential applications in basic studies of angiogenesis as well as in therapeutic applications targeting vascular or inflammatory diseases.
