Future Orbiting and In-Situ Exploration of Venus: Mount Etna as Terrestrial Analog

The exploration of Venus will soon experience a new golden era thanks to the recently selected NASA Deep Atmosphere of Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry and Imaging (DAVINCI) mission, NASA Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography & Spectroscopy (VERITAS) mission, and ESA EnVision mission. The DAVINCI mission will focus on the analysis of the the atmospheric vertical structure and composition of Earth’s twin planet and on the geologic structure of a tesserae terrain. The VERITAS mission will investigate the geologic features of its surface as well as geodynamic characteristics of the subsurface, providing high-resolution emissivity data, a global radar map at an approximate resolution of 30 meters/pixel, and estimation of the gravity anomaly of the shallow crust of the planet. The ESA EnVision mission will be complementary to the two NASA missions, providing high resolution 0.8-2.5 micron emissivity data, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, and Subsurface Radar Sounder (SRS) data. Beyond those, the proposed Roscosmos-NASA Venera-D mission will also be equipped with an orbiter that will investigate the atmospheric composition and circulation, as well as a lander that will analize the in-situ chemical composition and the surface-atmosphere interactions.

Optimizing Screening for Preventable Blindness With Head-Mounted Visual Assessment Technology

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness and is diagnosed as early-stage or late-stage. Early-stage AMD is usually asymptomatic and entails pigmentary changes of the retina (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). As the disorder progresses, there are atrophic or neovascular changes that distort vision, especially the central visual field (Ayoub & Patel, 2009). There are several genetic and non-genetic risk factors for AMD and no proven therapy to slow or reverse late-stage atrophic AMD, while anti-VEGF has effectively treated late-stage neovascular AMD. Several genes of interest have also been investigated thoroughly thus far in their connection to AMD and the CFH and ARMS2 genes have shown promise in understanding the genetic basis of the disorder (Awh et al., 2013). There are other epigenetic and environmental factors as well including smoking and low antioxidant levels (Cano et al., 2010). Ongoing investigations include antioxidant supplementation and a smoking cessation regimen to reverse early-stage AMD (Cano et al., 2010). Progress in treating AMD as a disorder across its varied stages requires newer therapeutics along with a more detailed understanding of the genetic and cellular pathways of pathophysiology is needed to better counter this prevalent disorder of the eye.

Passive PCB Mounted Thermal Switch

A printed circuit board (PCB) generates heat during operation. In a vacuum this heat can only be rejected by conduction and radiation. In order to reject heat effectively the PCB needs to be thermally conductive to the electronics enclosure. However, when the enclosure temperature gets too low, too much heat is rejected from the PCB and it can fail. This thermal switch has been designed to allow for heat rejection when the PCB is sufficiently warm but then greatly reduce heat rejection when the temperature gets low enough.

Finite Element Based Model of Fiber-optic Strain Sensor Mounted on a Semi-monocoque Structure

Fiber-optic strain sensing (FOSS) provides an opportunity for additional awareness and can enable other mitigations such as flutter suppression or gust load alleviation but requires an accurate computational model as part of a design process that integrates structures and controls. A modeling approach for fiber-optic strain sensors has been developed using a shell element formulation in a detailed finite element model. The new FOSS modeling approach is designed to better scale to more complex realistic structures and fiber layouts than previous approaches. The modeling method was applied to the X-56A vehicle and results were compared to experimental static ground-test data. Additionally, the experimental sensor noise of these fiber optic sensors was assessed for the correlations in time and correlations along the fiber. The noise does show significant correlations both in time and along the fibers. These correlations of the noise should also be considered in modeling and assessing algorithms that will use FOSS.

Passive PCB Mounted Thermal Switch

A printed circuit board (PCB) generates heat during operation. In a vacuum this heat can only be rejected by conduction and radiation. To reject heat effectively and avoid overheating, the PCB needs to be thermally conductive to the electronics enclosure. However, if the system rejects too much heat, or not enough heat, either can result in system failure. The thermal switch will be able to regulate the amount of heat the system rejects to stay within the operational temperature range.

Transmission mounted electrical charging system and dual driveline load coupling

A system includes a PTO device that selectively couples to a driveline of a vehicle at each of two driveline coupling positions, and a motor/generator electrically coupled to an electrical power storage system. The system further includes a shared load selectively powered by the driveline or the motor/generator. The PTO device further includes a coupling actuator that couples the shared load to the motor/generator in a first position, and couples the shared load to the driveline in a second position.

Preparing Solar Photovoltaic Systems Against Storms. Pre-Storm Solar PV Checklist: Distributed Ground-Mounted Systems

Through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has used subject matter experts to compile a set of checklists to help Puerto Rico and other communities prepare for storms. Renewable energy and distributed energy systems have the potential to provide power to neighborhoods, vulnerable residents, and certain facilities within a community, if those systems are designed to provide power during a grid disruption. The storm-hardening checklists provide storm preparation actions that can increase the chances that solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are available when communities need them most.
