Large Game Distribution Camera Study at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The unique habitats at the Laboratory support a diverse community of wildlife. The habitat types that include Pinon Juniper, Ponderosa Pine, and Mixed-conifer forests each provide different resources important for a variety of species. Wildlife monitoring for large game animals can be challenging because they avoid interactions with humans, and prefer undeveloped areas. This study was conducted to analyze the distribution of predators and other game animals seasonally across the Laboratory. This research informs decisions regarding wildlife management recommendations for conservation and protection. This study utilized game cameras to remotely monitor wildlife. As camera technology has advanced, game cameras have become adequate for documenting individuals, and are commonly used in wildlife studies on predation, abundance, occupancy, diversity, and endangered species detection. Twenty cameras were placed across the LANL landscape using a modified systematic sampling design. They were deployed in February 2018 and retrieved in January 2019, thus each camera sampled for one full year. All images were reviewed and the species, number, age, and sex of all animals in the photo were recorded. Here we present data for the most abundant species encountered: deer, elk, coyote, bear, bobcat, mountain lion, and fox respectively. The data were summarized by species and season. Future work will include occupancy modelling for each species. This will allow the development of heat maps showing species distributions across the Laboratory.

Data Science and Computation for Rapid and Dynamic Compression Experiment Workflows at Experimental Facilities, September 8-11, 2020. Workshop Report

The application of high pressure to materials has enabled discoveries in scientific fields such as planetary science, materials science, and materials synthesis. Recent advances in X-ray user light sources and other facilities, co-location and integration of user facilities with high-pressure drivers, availability of high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, and the development of new data science techniques have created opportunities for, and challenges in, advancing data analytics for rapid and dynamic compression experiments. To address these challenges, harness the emerging technology now available, and expedite scientific discovery, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) hosted a virtual workshop entitled “Data Science and Computation for Rapid and Dynamic Compression Workflows at Experimental Facilities” from September 8 to 11, 2020. The workshop included 95 registered scientists and analytics experts from 15 universities, 9 United States (US) national laboratories, 5 US and European X-ray light sources, neutron sources such as the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), other big science facilities such as the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and an industry representative. The workshop included 31 invited talks and 4 lightning talks by students and postdocs.

Acceptable Knowledge Technologist Procedure

Process acceptable knowledge (AK) is a waste stream characterization method that can be used to meet all or part of the waste analysis requirements appropriate for the waste. The method may include documented knowledge of process (KOP), additional characterization data, and/or facility records of analysis. LANL will use process AK to ensure chemical compatibility; assign matrix parameter categories and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hazardous waste numbers (HWNs) commonly referred to as EPA codes to waste streams; and determine the waste material parameters and radionuclides present in waste streams.

Northstar Accelerator Based Mo99 Production Facility Design Support

Facility design support in FY20 centered on transfer of the target insertion and design details to MBraun and Springs, the companies under contract via Northstar to do the hot cell, target insertion and the local target shielding. A significant number of changes have been introduced by these vendors which have been reviewed and critiqued. In addition, the company contracted to produce the Mo100 disks announced that the tolerance on the thickness of 0.5 mm would be ±25%. An alternative design of the target holder was proposed. Bulk shielding and local target shielding design work has continued also and will be reported. Ongoing design and cooling issues continue to arise as the facility takes shape and moves toward completion. LANL is part of the team identifying, analyzing and designing solutions to these issues. Many of these are covered in this report.

Uncertainty Analysis for a Criticality Benchmark [Slides]

This presentation discusses how KRUSTY was analyzed with LANL’s MCNP neutron transport code, Monte Carlo N-Particle. In the Monte Carlo method, neutrons are born in fission events and fly around the geometry having events (e.g., scatter, capture, fission, escape) according to the natural probabilities. “Natural probabilities” are given as neutron cross sections , which are measured and evaluated nuclear data. One of the goals of the benchmark project is to improve the nuclear cross sections (and the codes that use them). In this work, the response of interest is called k eff , which describes the neutron multiplication in a near critical system. Like most quantities, k eff is not measured directly; it is only inferred. In summation, MCNP results for k eff matched the measurements extremely well. The evaluated uncertainties are asymmetric and smaller than 0.00100 (e.g., + 0.00080 / – 0.00062). The largest uncertainties are due to alignment.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Floodplain Assessment for Fire Risk Mitigations at the Lower Slobbovia Testing Site in (TA-36)

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is proposing to take fire pre-suppression actions at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Technical Area (TA) 36. Constructing a fire break and a fuel break surrounding the Lower Slobbovia explosives testing site in addition to the current vegetation mowing practices would establish a safety perimeter to help prevent fires from spreading away from the firing point. NNSA has prepared this floodplain assessment in accordance with 10 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1022 Compliance with Floodplain and Wetland Environmental Review Requirements (10 CFR 1022), which was promulgated to implement DOE requirements under Executive Order 11988 Floodplain Management (EO 1977). A floodplain is defined in 10 CFR 1022 as “the lowlands adjoining inland and coastal waters and relatively flat areas and flood prone areas of offshore islands,” and a base floodplain as “the 100-year floodplain, that is, a floodplain with a 1.0 percent chance of flooding in any given year (CFR 2003).” This floodplain assessment evaluates potential impacts to floodplain values and functions from implementation of the proposed action, identifies alternatives to the Proposed Action, and allows for meaningful public comment.

Magnetic Velocity Gauges: Effects of Misalignment

Embedded velocity gauges are standardly used at LANL on gas gun experiments of a shock to-detonation transition. The experiments are intended to be one-dimensional with a planar shock driven by the projectile from a gas gun propagating along the axis of the HE cylinder. As disussed by Gustavsen et al. [1999], the accuracy of the gauges depends on the alignment of the directions of shock propagation, magnetic field and the active gauge element. A source of inaccuracies is from tilt or misalignment angle at impact between the projectile surface and the HE surface; typically a few milliradians. This leads to the shock propagating at a slight angle to the axis of the HE cylinder and can affect the shock rise time of the velocity gauges, the time offset between the tracker gauges for the trajectory of the lead shock, and the gauge positions in the direction of propagation. It is important to note that tilt is characterized by 2 parameters; the magnitude of the angle relative to the HE axis and the direction in the plane transverse to the HE axis. Here we derive the uncertainties from tilt to leading order in the tilt angle.

IC reports (2021)

We requested HPC support to continue research on the seismic waves generated by impacts. We used the following codes: (1) the Hybrid Optimization Software Suite (HOSS), developed at LANL. HOSS is based on a combined Finite and Discrete Element Method (FDEM). New material models are developed for the sedimentary rocks. HOSS has been recently benchmarked to iSale and FLAG codes. SPECFEM3D is an open-source code developed since the last 90s. It won the Gordon Bell award for best performance in 2003, was finalist again in 2008 for a run at 0.16 petaflops on 149,784 cores on the ‘Jaguar’ Cray system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It also won the BULL Joseph Fourier supercomputing award in 2010.; SW4 is a 4th-order finite difference code developed at LLNL which is currently actively developed to handle complex 3D models and to be ported on future exascale platforms. We assessed our need to a total of 3.9M CPU-hrs for year 1 and and 3.1 M for year 2.

2020 Results for Avian Monitoring of Inorganic and Organic Element Concentrations in Passerine Eggs and Nestlings Collected from Technical Area 16 Burn Grounds, Technical Area 36 Minie, and Technical Area 39 Point 6 at Los Alamos National Laboratory

In 2020, non-viable avian eggs and two nestling were opportunistically collected at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) near open detonation sites located at Technical Area (TA) 16 burn grounds, TA-36 Minie, and TA-39 Point 6. These samples were evaluated for inorganic elements (mostly metals), dioxins, and furans. A total of six eggs and two deceased western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) nestling samples were collected among the three locations of interest. Concentrations of inorganic elements observed in this study were compared with the regional statistical reference level (RSRL) which is the upper-level bounds of background concentrations (mean + three standard deviations = 99% confidence interval). Several inorganic elements were not detected in avian eggs and all inorganic elements detected were below the RSRL and the lowest observable adverse effect level (LOAEL), when available. One nestling collected from TA-39 contained detectable concentrations of two dioxin congeners. Heptachlorodibenzodioxin-1,2,3,4,6,7,8 and octachlorodibenzodioxin-1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 concentration exceeded the RSRL, but did not exceed the calculated tetrachlorodibenzodioxin 2,3,7,8 (TCDD) toxic equivalent LOAEL. These data suggest that inorganic and organic element concentrations in eggs and nestlings are not of ecological concern. More data are needed to make a robust assessment and to evaluate trends over time.
