A multi-wavelength streaked optical pyrometer for dynamic shock compression measurements above 2500 K

This work presents a concept and implementation of a calibrated streaked spectral pyrometer (SSP) temperature diagnostic used in dynamically driven shock experiments on a two-stage gas gun. This system relies upon measuring the total system response using a tunable monochromator, a NIST-traceable calibrated power meter, and a SSP. The diagnostic performance is validated against previously measured temperatures of shock driven z-cut quartz at 99 GPa and 93 GPa. The results are found to agree with the literature to within 5% and are discussed in this manuscript. The experimental setup utilizes measurements from multiple SSP systems per sample, providing several independent measurements and substantially increasing confidence in the extrapolated shock driven sample temperature.

Rapid assessment of REBCO CC angular critical current density J c (B, T = 4.2 K, θ) using torque magnetometry up to at least 30 tesla

Abstract Detailed design of REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − x (REBCO)-based magnets ideally relies on knowledge of the full angular and wide temperature range characterization of the critical current I c of the REBCO coated conductors (CC) at high magnetic fields. In practice, however, obtaining I c ( B , T , θ ) data by the commonly used electrical transport technique is expensive, tedious, and difficult, due to high critical current values that exceed 2000 A for B | | a b -plane ( θ = 90 deg). The conductors are often damaged during angular transport measurements at angles approaching the ab -plane. Therefore, so far, REBCO magnets have been designed without full I c ( B , T , θ ) data sets. Here, we present J c ( B , T , θ ) results for more than twenty samples of CC all made to the same advanced pinning specification produced by SuperPower Inc. For this, we employed torque magnetometry, benchmarking the results to transport I c measurements mostly made away from ab -plane, finding good agreement with scaling factors ≈1–1.3. What is striking is the huge variety of properties exhibited by the samples, even for CC made recently. Given the huge attention now being paid to the effects of screening currents and to the torques generated by offsets between the tape plane and the local magnetic field vector, our data set suggests some caution in detailed design of such magnets without having data of the type presented here.

K-Shell photoabsorption in Si 11+ : Relativistic contributions via Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations

As a part of the investigation of the entire Si isonuclear sequence for x-ray spectral diagnostics, we focus on the Li-like Si 11+ ion, a stable component that features prominently in x-ray astrophysical spectra. In this work, we perform R-matrix calculations for the photoabsorption cross section of Si 11+ including relativistic contributions via the use of a Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. Relativistic effects—predominantly spin-orbit splitting of resonances and mass-velocity and one-body Darwin global shifts of energies— are shown to be tractable and of importance for accuracy in x-ray spectral modeling data banks.

MEOP based 3 He polarization and injection system for experiments below 1 K

Metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) is a widely used technique for producing polarized 3 He. In connection with an experiment to search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) we have built a MEOP based 3 He polarization and injection system to prepare 80 % polarized 3 He at room temperature which will be injected into a ∼ 400 mK measurement cell filled with superfluid 4 He. We describe the polarization and injection system, which is designed to allow for final concentrations of 10 -8 –10 -10 of 80% polarized 3 He in the superfluid filled measurement cell. Only ≈ 0.72% polarization loss due to gradients is expected during injection.

Conceptual design of a replacement 2.1 K cold box for the Spallation Neutron Source Central Helium Liquefier

Abstract After more than 20 years of operation, the cold compressor technology in use at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is obsolete, and replacement parts and service are no longer available. SNS has partnered with Jefferson Lab to design and construct a replacement sub-atmospheric cold box outfitted with modern cold compressor technology. The general design follows from Jefferson Lab’s experience on other recent sub-atmospheric cold box projects. Design decisions are backed by thorough engineering analysis to ensure technical requirements are met in a cost-effective manner. Conceptual design of the replacement cold box has been completed, and will be summarized in this paper. It features five cold compressors with an operating flow range of 80-140 g/s, and includes piping and valving to support cold compressor maintenance without interrupting flow circulation to the load. The approach to thermal shielding, insulation, and integration of the upgraded cold compressor hardware into the existing SNS control system will also be addressed.

TOI-431/HIP 26013: a super-Earth and a sub-Neptune transiting a bright, early K dwarf, with a third RV planet

ABSTRACT We present the bright (Vmag = 9.12), multiplanet system TOI-431, characterized with photometry and radial velocities (RVs). We estimate the stellar rotation period to be 30.5 ± 0.7 d using archival photometry and RVs. Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) objects of Interest (TOI)-431 b is a super-Earth with a period of 0.49 d, a radius of 1.28 ± 0.04 R⊕, a mass of 3.07 ± 0.35 M⊕, and a density of 8.0 ± 1.0 g cm−3; TOI-431 d is a sub-Neptune with a period of 12.46 d, a radius of 3.29 ± 0.09 R⊕, a mass of $9.90^{+1.53}_{-1.49}$ M⊕, and a density of 1.36 ± 0.25 g cm−3. We find a third planet, TOI-431 c, in the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher RV data, but it is not seen to transit in the TESS light curves. It has an Msin i of $2.83^{+0.41}_{-0.34}$ M⊕, and a period of 4.85 d. TOI-431 d likely has an extended atmosphere and is one of the most well-suited TESS discoveries for atmospheric characterization, while the super-Earth TOI-431 b may be a stripped core. These planets straddle the radius gap, presenting an interesting case-study for atmospheric evolution, and TOI-431 b is a prime TESS discovery for the study of rocky planet phase curves.

Explaining the extra crystal-field mode in 𝐴 ⁢Ce ⁢𝑋 2 (𝐴 = K, Rb, Na; 𝑋 = O, S, Se, Te)

A growing list of Ce-based magnets have shown an extra and heretofore unexplained crystal electric field (CEF) mode at high energies. We describe a process whereby an optical phonon can produce a split CEF mode well above the phonon energy. We use density functional theory and point-charge model calculations to estimate the phonon distortions and coupling to model this effect in KCeO 2 , showing that it accounts for the extra CEF mode observed. Furthermore, this mechanism is generic and may explain the extra modes observed on a variety of Ce 3+ compounds.

Ramp compression of tantalum to multiterapascal pressures: Constraints of the thermal equation of state to 2.3 TPa and 5000 K

We report measurements of the compressibility of ramp compressed tantalum to a final stress of 2.3 TPa corresponding to threefold volumetric compression. Using these data, we extended the experimental constraint on the Ta cold compression curve by an order of magnitude in pressure. Furthermore, by combining the resulting data with previous measurements of shock compression and ambient pressure heating, we construct an experimentally bounded and thermodynamically consistent equation of state model for Ta which has 2% uncertainty in pressure at 1 TPa. We therefore propose Ta as an in situ pressure scale for laser-heated static compression experiments which were recently able to reach terapascal pressures and thousands of degrees Kelvin. Our new equation of state of Ta is experimentally constrained at extreme pressures and temperatures relevant to a wide range of planetary interiors and will allow for more accurate comparison between experimental measurements and theory at extreme conditions.
