Nonlinear global gyrokinetic delta- f turbulence simulations in a quasi-axisymmetric stellarator

We use the global gyrokinetic stellarator code XGC-S to look at turbulence physics in geometry of the proposed quasi-axisymmetric stellarator, QUASAR. In this article, the XGC-S code is first verified for nonlinear simulations of ion temperature gradient-driven turbulence by a successful benchmark with the established nonlinear tokamak code XGC1 in a CYCLONE-like tokamak case. We then apply the XGC-S code to QUASAR for nonlinear turbulence physics. We find that the highly poloidally localized linear mode gives way to a more evenly distributed nonlinear turbulent structure. Furthermore, the radial extent of the mode increases and occupies a large fraction of the volume, despite the initially localized temperature profile, as the profiles relax.

Numerical study of $\delta$-function current sheets arising from resonant magnetic perturbations

We report general three-dimensional toroidal ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibria with a continuum of nested flux surfaces are susceptible to forming singular current sheets when resonant perturbations are applied. The presence of singular current sheets indicates that, in the presence of non-zero resistivity, magnetic reconnection will ensue, leading to the formation of magnetic islands and potentially regions of stochastic field lines when islands overlap. Numerically resolving singular current sheets in the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) limit has been a significant challenge. This work presents numerical solutions of the Hahm–Kulsrud–Taylor (HKT) problem, which is a prototype for resonant singular current sheet formation. The HKT problem is solved by two codes: a Grad–Shafranov (GS) solver and the Stepped Pressure Equilibrium Code (SPEC) code. The GS solver has built-in nested flux surfaces with prescribed magnetic fluxes. The SPEC code implements multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD), whereby the solution relaxes to a Taylor state in each region while maintaining force balance across the interfaces between regions. As the number of regions increases, the MRxMHD solution appears to approach the ideal MHD solution assuming a continuum of nested flux surfaces. We demonstrate agreement between the numerical solutions obtained from the two codes through a convergence study.

High conductivity coherently strained quantum well XHEMT heterostructures on AlN substrates with delta doping

Polarization-induced two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in AlN/GaN/AlN quantum well high-electron-mobility transistors on ultrawide bandgap AlN substrates offer a promising route to advance microwave and power electronics with nitride semiconductors. The electron mobility in thin GaN quantum wells embedded in AlN is limited by high internal electric field and the presence of undesired polarization-induced two-dimensional hole gases (2DHGs). To enhance the electron mobility in such heterostructures on AlN, previous efforts have resorted to thick, relaxed GaN channels with dislocations. In this work, we introduce n-type compensation δ-doping in a coherently strained single-crystal (Xtal) AlN/GaN/AlN heterostructure to counter the 2DHG formation at the GaN/AlN interface, and simultaneously lower the internal electric field in the well. This approach yields a δ-doped XHEMT structure with a high 2DEG density of ∼3.2×1013 cm−2 and a room temperature (RT) mobility of ∼855 cm2/Vs, resulting in the lowest RT sheet resistance 226.7 Ω/□ reported to date in coherently strained AlN/GaN/AlN HEMT heterostructures on the AlN platform.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of {delta}C in the superallowed beta decay of 10C

We perform an ab initio quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction δC to the superallowed β decay of ¹⁰C. Using both phenomenological and chiral nuclear interactions, we evaluate the Fermi matrix element and quantify its deviation from the canonical √2 value. The resulting δC values lie in the range ≈ 0.15–0.25% and are consistent, within sizable uncertainties (approximately 34%–65% relative), across Hamiltonians, indicating no statistically significant dependence on the choice of nuclear interaction. The extracted values of Vud are also found to be compatible with current determinations within these uncertainties.

Investigation of AlGaN-Delta–GaN-Based UV Photodiodes in a Metal–Semiconductor–Metal Configuration for Efficient and Fast Solar Blind UV Sensing

Metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) configured UV photodiodes (PD’s) were designed and fabricated on an AlGaN/GaN–based substrate for efficient and ultrafast UV detection. The purpose was to investigate the feasibility of obtaining efficient and ultrafast temporal response from these devices in the UV given the challenges associated with the formation of Schottky contacts on laterally oriented AlGaN/GaN thin films. Two sets of devices were implemented using Pt and Au as metal contacts with 5-µm finger width, 5-µm finger spacing, and a 50-µm x 50-µm active area. Spectral and voltage bias studies were done to establish the spectral profile and the effect of bias voltage on the responsivity of the detectors at 265 nm. Here, the best vertical MSM PD’s produced 0.6-A/W responsivity under 10-V bias voltage at 265 nm. Peak spectral responsivities were recorded as 1.35 A/W and 1.25 A/W at 240 nm for Pt and Au PD’s, respectively.

Thermodynamics of gallium-stabilized delta-plutonium: A high-temperature drop calorimetry study

Throughout the Cold War (1947–1991), both the United States and the former Soviet Union independently derived a phase diagram for the Pu-Ga system that has different implications on Pu phase stability. In the phase diagram produced by the United States, the Pu δ-phase is thermodynamically stable at room temperatures when Ga content is between 2 and 9 at. %. The diagram produced by the Soviet Union shows the δ-phase undergoing an eutectoid decomposition into the α-Pu + α-Pu 3 Ga at 7.9 at. % Ga and 370 K. This would suggest that Ga-stabilized δ-Pu is metastable with respect to α-Pu + α-Pu 3 Ga at 298 K. To investigate this, and the thermodynamic behavior of Ga in the FCC lattice of δ-Pu, we have utilized high-temperature drop calorimetry to study the enthalpy of formation of two δ-Pu 1−x Ga x compositions. In doing so, mixing models (regular and subregular) were developed to understand the thermodynamic behavior of Ga in the FCC lattice of δ-Pu and found a strong departure from ideal conditions, which suggests Ga ordering in the FCC lattice of δ-Pu. Overall, it was found that δ-Pu 1−x Ga x is enthalpically metastable with respect to α-Pu + Pu 3 Ga at 298 K.

In-medium $\Delta (1232)$ potential, pion production in heavy-ion collisions and the symmetry energy

Using the dcQMD transport model, the isoscalar and isovector in-medium potentials of the Δ (1232) baryon are studied and information regarding their effective strength is obtained from a comparison to experimental pion production data in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy. The best description is achieved for an isoscalar potential moderately more attractive than the nucleon optical potential and a rather small isoscalar relative effective mass $m$$^{*}_{Δ}$ ≈ 0.45. For the isovector component only a constraint between the potential’s strength at saturation and the isovector effective mass difference can be extracted, which depends on quantities such as the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass difference. These results are incompatible with the usual assumption, in transport models, that the Δ (1232) and nucleon potentials are equal. The density dependence of symmetry energy can be studied using the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra. Results are however correlated with the value of neutron-proton effective mass difference. Furthermore, this region of spectra is shown to be affected by uncertain model ingredients such as the pion potential or in-medium correction to inelastic scattering cross-sections at levels smaller than 10%. Extraction of precise constraints for the density dependence of symmetry energy above saturation will require experimental data for pion production in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy and experimental values for the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra accurate to better than 5%.

Improved measurement of the strong-phase difference $\delta _D^{K\pi }$ in quantum-correlated $D{\overline{D}}$ decays

The decay D → K - π + is studied in a sample of quantum-correlated D$\overline{D}$ pairs, based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb -1 collected at the ψ(3770) resonance by the BESIII experiment. The asymmetry between CP-odd and CP-even eigenstate decays into K - π + is determined to be A Kπ = 0.132 ± 0.011 ± 0.007, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement is an update of an earlier study exploiting additional tagging modes, including several decay modes involving a $K^{0}_{L}$ meson. The branching fractions of the $K^{0}_{L}$ modes are determined as input to the analysis in a manner that is independent of any strong phase uncertainty. Using the predominantly CP-even tag D → π + π - π 0 and the ensemble of CP-odd eigenstate tags, the observable $A^{πππ^0}_{Kπ}$ is measured to be 0.130 ± 0.012 ± 0.008. The two asymmetries are sensitive to $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ cos $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ where $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ and $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ are the ratio of amplitudes and phase difference, respectively, between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-favoured decays. In addition, events containing D → K - π + tagged by D → $K^{0}_{S,L}$π + π - are studied in bins of phase space of the three-body decays. This analysis has sensitivity to both $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ cos $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ and $r^{Kπ}_{D}$, sin $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$. A fit to A Kπ , $A^{πππ^0}_{Kπ}$ and the phase-space distribution of the D → $K^{0}_{S,L}$π + π - tags yields $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ = ($187.6^{+8.9+5.4}_{-9.7-6.4}$)°, where external constraints are applied for $r^{Kπ}_{D}$ and other relevant parameters. This is the most precise measurement of $δ^{Kπ}_{D}$ in quantum-correlated D$\overline{D}$ decays.
