A program-management plan with critical-path definition for Combustion Augmentation with Thermionic Energy Conversion (CATEC)

Thermionic energy conversion (TEC) is discussed. In recent TEC-topping analyses, overall plant efficiency (OPE) and cost of electricity (COE) improved slightly with current capabilities and substantially with fully matured technologies. Enhanced credibility derives from proven hot-corrosion protection for TEC by silicon-carbide clads in fossil fuel combustion products. Combustion augmentation with TEC (CATEC) affords minimal cost and plant perturbation, but with smaller OPE and COE improvements than more conventional topping applications. Risk minimization as well as comparative simplicity and convenience, favor CATEC for early market penetration. A program-management plan is proposed. Inputs, characteristics, outputs and capabilities are discussed.

Report of activities of the advanced coal extraction systems definition project, 1979 - 1980

During this period effort was devoted to: formulation of system performance goals in the areas of production cost, miner safety, miner health, environmental impact, and coal conservation, survey and in depth assessment of promising technology, and characterization of potential resource targets. Primary system performance goals are to achieve a return on incremental investment of 150% of the value required for a low risk capital improvement project and to reduce deaths and disability injuries per million man-hour by 50%. Although these performance goals were developed to be immediately applicable to the Central Appalachian coal resources, they were also designed to be readily adaptable to other coals by appending a geological description of the new resource. The work done on technology assessment was concerned with the performance of the slurry haulage system.

Aerobraked orbital transfer vehicle definition

A new technique has been developed to enhance the use of upper atmosphere aerobraking for increased performance from orbital transfer vehicles. This technique utilizes a pressure supported drag brake and the orbital transfer vehicle main engine to modulate aerodynamic drag and also to alleviate the aerodynamic heating during a grazing pass through the atmosphere. Performance analyses of vehicles utilizing all-propulsive or aerobraking during round trip missions from low earth orbit (LEO) to geo-synchronous earth orbit (GEO) and back shows that aerobraking allows a given vehicle to deliver approximately twice as much payload to GEO and return. Aerobraking also provides more than twice the round trip payload.

Exact random walk definition of the collisional-radiative ionization and recombination coefficients

The collisional-radiative ionization and recombination coefficients are shown to be expressible in terms of the 'total probability', from initial level i to final level j, which excludes intermediate returns to the initial level. Applications are made to three-level and four-level systems to illustrate the method of calculation and compare with an approximation currently used.

Space Construction Experiment Definition Study (SCEDS), part 1. Volume 2: Study results

A basic Space Shuttle flight experiment which will provide needed data on the construction of large space systems from the Orbiter was defined. The predicted dynamic behavior of a representative large structure, on-orbit construction operations, and Orbiter control during and after construction were studied. Evolutionary or supplemental flight experiments for the development or augmentation of a basic flight experiment were identified and defined. The study was divided into six major tasks with appropriate sub-tasks noted.

Mission definition for a large-aperture microwave radiometer spacecraft

An Earth-observation measurements mission is defined for a large-aperture microwave radiometer spacecraft. This mission is defined without regard to any particular spacecraft design concept. Space data application needs, the measurement selection rationale, and broad spacecraft design requirements and constraints are described. The effects of orbital parameters and image quality requirements on the spacecraft and mission performance are discussed. Over the land the primary measurand is soil moisture; over the coastal zones and the oceans important measurands are salinity, surface temperature, surface winds, oil spill dimensions and ice boundaries; and specific measurement requirements have been selected for each. Near-all-weather operation and good spatial resolution are assured by operating at low microwave frequencies using an extremely large aperture antenna in a low-Earth-orbit contiguous mapping mode.

Quad aperture RF definition

A single STS package 118 m diameter hoop/column antenna is capable of providing service for appr. 250,000 mobile users. The selected quad aperture configuration is able to provide at least 25 db C/I without cable blockage, column scatter, coupling between quad apertures, and tolerance effects. A feed can be designed which uses single polarized radiating elements while the overall system employs dual polarization. The quad aperture concept can eliminate the use of diplexers and their associated losses. The critical technology issues in the RF area include the design of the radiating elements, BFN, monolithic power amplifiers and receiver front end, tolerance control and packaging of the feed.

Improved definition of crustal anomalies for Magsat data

A scheme was developed for separating the portions of the magnetic field measured by the Magsat 1 satellite that arise from internal and external sources. To test this method, a set of sample coefficients were used to compute the field values along a simulated satellite orbit. This data was then used to try to recover the original coefficients. Matrix inversion and recursive least squares methods were used to solve for the input coefficients. The accuracy of the two methods are compared.

An extended BET format for La RC shuttle experiments: Definition and development

A program for shuttle post-flight data reduction is discussed. An extended Best Estimate Trajectory (BET) file was developed. The extended format results in some subtle changes to the header record. The major change is the addition of twenty-six words to each data record. These words include atmospheric related parameters, body axis rate and acceleration data, computed aerodynamic coefficients, and angular accelerations. These parameters were added to facilitate post-flight aerodynamic coefficient determinations as well as shuttle entry air data sensor analyses. Software (NEWBET) was developed to generate the extended BET file utilizing the previously defined ENTREE BET, a dynamic data file which may be either derived inertial measurement unit data or aerodynamic coefficient instrument package data, and some atmospheric information.

Cabin ozone and tropopause definition

A method to estimate ozone profiles is based on knowing the total ozone which may come from any observational system available such as Dobson photometers that are available from NMC forecasts and used operationally in flight planning. From this an ozone profile at selected pressure levels is obtained. The technique was based on five years of ozonesonde data. So far, models have been developed for winter, spring, and fall.

San Juan National Forest Land Management Planning Support System (LMPSS) requirements definition

The role of remote sensing data as it relates to a three-component land management planning system (geographic information, data base management, and planning model) can be understood only when user requirements are known. Personnel at the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado were interviewed to determine data needs for managing and monitoring timber, rangelands, wildlife, fisheries, soils, water, geology and recreation facilities. While all the information required for land management planning cannot be obtained using remote sensing techniques, valuable information can be provided for the geographic information system. A wide range of sensors such as small and large format cameras, synthetic aperture radar, and LANDSAT data should be utilized. Because of the detail and accuracy required, high altitude color infrared photography should serve as the baseline data base and be supplemented and updated with data from the other sensors.

Aerodynamic analysis of VTOL inlets and definition of a short, blowing-lip inlet

The results indicated that, without boundary layer control, either a very long inlet or an inlet with a very high contraction ratio lip will be required to meet the stringent design requirements. It is shown that active boundary layer control is an effective means of preventing separation and that a significant reduction in inlet size can be achieved by removing only a small amount of bleed in the throat region of the inlet. A short, blowing-lip model was designed and fabricated. This model features an adjustable, blowing slot located near the hilite on the windward side of the inlet.

Improved definition of crustal anomalies for MAGSAT data

The components of the magnetic field were examined and expressions for the components were obtained. The radial and tangential components produce values for the magnetic potential on a circular boundary. A solution for the coefficient of the external an internal terms in the potential is presented. The solution was obtained using two different least squares methods: a recursive least squares procedure and the standard method.
