A Comparative Techno-Economic Analysis of Renewable Methanol Synthesis Pathways from Biomass and CO2: Preprint

Global demand for methanol as both a chemical precursor and a fuel additive is rising. At the same time, numerous sustainable methanol production pathways are under development which, if commercialized, could present significant environmental benefits over traditional methanol synthesis pathways. There is a need to harmonize the analyses of sustainable pathways using a consistent techno-economic approach to evaluate the potential for commercialization of various pathways. This analysis considers economic and environmental factors critical to market acceptance of three sustainable pathways versus a commercial baseline. We suggest that biomass gasification to methanol represents a near-term viable pathway with high technology readiness level and commercially competitive market price. However, long-term solutions should consider CO2 electrolysis pathways which offer further improvements in sustainability metrics to support global decarbonization efforts.

Comparing generator predictions of transverse kinematic imbalance in neutrino-argon scattering

The largest uncertainties in estimating neutrino-nucleus interaction cross sections lie in the incomplete understanding of nuclear effects. A powerful tool to study nuclear effects is Transverse Kinematic Imbalance. This paper presents the first detailed comparison of the predictions of multiple event generators for distributions associated with Transverse Kinematic Imbalance for neutrino interactions on argon. Predictions for muon neutrinos interacting with an argon target are obtained using four standard neutrino event generation tools (GENIE, NuWro, GiBUU and NEUT). Example opportunities for discrimination between nuclear models leveraging future measurements are highlighted. The predictions shown in this paper are motivated by studying muon neutrinos from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam interacting at the location of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber, but the methods directly apply to other accelerator-based liquid argon neutrino experiments such as SBND, ICARUS and DUNE.

Comparing LLC-Memory Traffic between CPU and GPU Architectures

The cache hierarchy in modern CPUs and GPUs is becoming increasingly complex, which makes understanding the handshake between the memory access patterns and the cache hierarchy difficult. Moreover, the details of different cache policies are not publicly available. Therefore, the research community relies on observation to understand the relationship between memory access patterns and cache hierarchy. Our previous studies delved into the different microarchitectures of Intel CPUs. In this study, GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD are considered. Even though the execution models in CPUs and GPUs are distinct, this study attempts to correlate the behavior of the cache hierarchy of CPUs and GPUs. Using the knowledge gathered from studying Intel CPUs, the similarities and dissimilarities between CPUs and GPUs are identified. Through model evaluation, this study provides a proof of concept that traffic between last-level cache and memory can be predicted for sequential streaming and strided access patterns on GPUs.

Comparative Economic Analysis of Capture, Transport, and Storage from a CO2 Source Perspective

This presentation provides an overview of a study that evaluated multiple carbon capture and storage (CCS) networks within the Central United States using NETL-developed resources and models to assess management options different CO2 source types face from both economic and regional geologic perspectives when capturing, transporting and storing their CO2. It was presented at the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) 2023 conference, organized and presented by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and held in Houston, Texas, April 25-27, 2023.

Comparative Study of Commercial-Scale CO2 Storage Options in Single and Stacked Saline Formations in Managing Reservoir Pressure Buildup

Presentation at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon, Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) held in Houston, Texas, April 25–27, 2023. The presentation emphasizes the importance of coordination among CO2 storage projects as CCUS deployment needs to be scaled up. The presentation focuses on findings from reservoir simulation studies in which different configurations of injection zones (a single saline formation and a stacked sequence of saline formations) are targeted for CO2 storage to accommodate the amplified storage volume needed while managing reservoir pressure buildup and interference induced by multi-well injection operations.

An Experimental Analysis on the CNS Simulator Comparing Human Performance between Operators and Students

This study, as a previous study of the SHEEP project, aims to identify differences in human performance data through experiments with students and operators using CNS (Compact Nuclear Simulator). To achieve this goal, this experiment seeks to analyze the correlation of measured human performance between students and operators through a randomized factorial experiment design. Five human performances are measured. In addition, several scenarios and related procedures have been developed for the CNS experiments.
