Characterizing land processes in the biosphere

NASA long-term planning for the satellite remote sensing of land areas is discussed from the perspective of a holistic interdisciplinary approach to the study of the biosphere. The earth is characterized as a biogeochemical system; the impact of human activity on this system is considered; and the primary scientific goals for their study are defined. Remote-sensing programs are seen as essential in gaining an improved understanding of energy budgets, the hydrological cycle, other biogeological cycles, and the coupling between these cycles, with the construction of a global data base and eventually the development of predictive simulation models which can be used to assess the impact of planned human activities. Current sensor development at NASA includes a multilinear array for the visible and IR and the L-band Shuttle Imaging Radar B, both to be flown on Shuttle missions in the near future; for the 1990s, a large essentially permanent man-tended interdisciplinary multisensor platform connected to an advanced data network is being planned.

Residual stress characterization with an ultrasonic/magnetic technique

A potentially useful new technique for residual stress characterization in ferromagnetic material is described. The unique feature of this technique is the measurement of small changes in ultrasonic wave velocity by the application of external dc magnetic field in the material under various stress conditions. It was found, in steel, that the fractional change in the natural velocity Delta W/W of waves propagating along the external field direction is affected by the uniaxial stress applied in the same axis. External compression lowers the slope of the Delta W/W curve in the low field region, while external tension generally does the opposite. For most cases, the slope in this region falls below zero under external compression. The result of measurements in specimens with residual stress shows exactly the same tendency.

The characterization of Mode I delamination failure in non-woven, multidirectional laminates

The uniform double cantilever beam test and SEM are presently used for the characterization of Mode I delamination behavior in fiber-reinforced epoxy laminates. Delamination failure assumes forms that depend on ply orientation, test specimen geometry, and matrix toughness, but the calculated fracture energy is noted to be heavily dependent on fracture surface morphology. A material property concept that is independent of both test specimen geometry and the orientation of the plies constituting the delaminating interface is elucidated, through the definition of interlaminar fracture solely in terms of an interlaminar separation that includes no fiber breakage or pull-out. This value, which dissipates the lowest possible amount of energy during crack growth, is the controlling factor for laminate toughness.

Preparation and characterization of a siloxane containing bismaleimide

A novel siloxane containing bismaleimide has been prepared by reacting maleic anhydride, benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride and bis(gamma-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane. Characterization of this monomer was done by comparing its nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (NMR) to those of model compounds. Solubility of the prepolymer was tested in amide, chlorinated and ether solvents. Films were cast from solution as well as by melt processing and a cure cycle was determined. Infrared spectrum (IR) of the resulting film was obtained. Thermal polymerization was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal properties of the cured resin were followed by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), torsional braid analysis (TBA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) was used to study the effect of postcure on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resin. Adhesive strength of the resin was obtained at ambient temperature.

Synthesis and characterization of phosphorus-containing polyamides and copolyamides based on 1-(dialkoxyphosphinyl)methyl-2,4- and -2,6-diaminobenzenes

Phosphorus containing polyamides and copolyamides were prepared from 1-(dialkoxyphosphinyl)methyl-2,4- and -2,6-diaminobenzenes. The polymers produced were characterized by infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their thermal properties were compared with those of the corresponding common polyamides. In addition, by determining the limiting oxygen index value of some of these polyamides, their fire resistance was evaluated.

Synthesis and characterization of a melt processable polyimide

A melt processable polyimide which contains sulfur and oxygen bridges between the aromatic rings (BDSDA/APB) was synthesized and characterized. Its physical, mechanical, thermal and flow properties were determined as was its resistance to some of the more commonly used solvents. The melt flow properties were measured for the temperature range 250 C - 350 C and under the conditions (stress/strain) encountered in commercial processes.

Polyimide characterization studies - Effect of pendant alkyl groups

The effect on selected polyimide properties when pendant alkyl groups were attached to the polymer backbone was investigated. A series of polymers were prepared using benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) and seven different p-alkyl-m,p'-diaminobenzophenone monomers. The alkyl groups varied in length from C(1) (methyl) to C(9) (nonyl). The polyimide prepared from BTDA and m,p'-diaminobenzophenone was included as a control. All polymers were characterized by various chromatographic, spectroscopic, thermal, and mechanical techniques. Increasing the length of the pendant alkyl group resulted in a systematic decrease in glass transition temperature (Tg) for vacuum cured films. A 70 C decrease in Tg to 193 C was observed for the nonyl polymer compared to the Tg for the control. A corresponding systematic increase in Tg indicative of crosslinking, was observed for air cured films. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a slight sacrifice in thermal stability with increasing alkyl length. No improvement in film toughness was observed.

Thermal sensing for characterizing the contents of waste storage drums

The present investigation is concerned with the feasibility to employ remote sensing for the characterization of the contents of liquid chemical waste storage drums. Philipson et al. (1981) had found that, when the air temperature is changing rapidly, differences in the thermal inertia of the drum contents can lead to detectable differences in the skin temperature of the drums. Thus, postsunset, airborne thermal remote sensing could potentially provide some level of discrimination among chemical storage drums. Discrimination should be possible among steel drums filled largely with: (1) aqueous solvents, (2) organic solvents, or (3) clay packing materials. The response of a drum filled with clay packing materials should be similar to that of an empty drum. The reported study had the objective to verify the theoretical findings, taking into account the use of a hand-held infrared radiometer. It was found that under the proper conditions the temperature differences among drums with the three different types of contents will be significant and consistent.

Transmission electron microscopy characterization of microstructural features in aluminum-lithium-copper alloys

A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination of aluminum-lithium-copper alloys was conducted. The principal purpose is to characterize the nature, size, and distribution of stringer particles which result from the powder metallurgy (P/M) processing of these alloys. Microstructural features associated with the stringer particles are reported that help explain the stress corrosion susceptibility of the powder metallurgy-processed Al-Li-Cu alloys. In addition, matrix precipitaton events are documented for a variety of heat treatments and process variations. Hot rolling is observed to significantly alter the nature of matrix precipitation, and the observations are correlated with concomitant mechanical property variations.

Characterization of delamination and transverse cracking in graphite/epoxy laminates by acoustic emission

Efforts to characterize and differentiate between two major failure processes in graphite/epoxy composites - transverse cracking and Mode I delamination - are described. Representative laminates were tested in uniaxial tension and flexure. The failure processes were monitored and identified by acoustic emission (AE). The effect of moisture on AE was also investigated. Each damage process was found to have a distinctive AE output that is significantly affected by moisture conditions. It is concluded that AE can serve as a useful tool for detecting and identifying failure modes in composite structures in laboratory and in service environments.

Electrical characterization of plasma-grown oxides on gallium arsenide

Plasma-grown GaAs oxides and their interfaces have been characterized by measuring the electrical properties of metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors and of Schottky junctions. The current transport mechanism in the oxide at high electrical field was found to be Frankel-Poole emission, with an electron trap center at 0.47 eV below the conduction band of the oxide. The interface-state density, evaluated from capacitance and conductance measurements, exhibits a U-shaped interface-state continuum extending over the entire band gap. Two discrete deep states with high concentration are superimposed on this continuum at 0.40 and 0.70 eV below the conduction band. The results obtained from measurements on Schottky junctions have excluded the possibility that these two deep states originate from plasma damage. Possible origins of these states are discussed in this paper.

Characterization of concurrent processing

Computer architectures designed for concurrent processing are characterized by the number of processing elements, ensemble speed, random access memory, input/output routes, and modes of operation. The important attributes of processing tasks are then identified, and some processing stratagems are examined. It is shown that the greater the complexity of a given task, the wider the range of possible stratagems which can accomplish the task. For relatively simple tasks, the optimum stratagem can be found by analytical reasoning. For more complex tasks, however, optimum scheduling techniques may have to be employed for the assignment of segments of the task to the available processing elements.

Characterization of X-ray sources detected in a deep Einstein exposure of the field around 3C 295

An extensive set of optical and radio observations is presented that characterize the X-ray sources detected in an extremely deep Einstein Observatory exposure of the 3C 295 region. A total of five X-ray sources was found. This number is consistent with the only previous log N - log S result published at these flux levels. One of the sources was a galactic star. The four extragalactic sources are active galactic nuclei (three Seyferts and one QSO). Two of the sources are Seyfert galaxies in the 3C 295 cluster, one of which was previously unknown. The number of Seyfert galaxies in the cluster that is found from this complete X-ray survey is inconsistent with that expected from the fraction of low-redshift active galactic nuclei in their clusters.

Characterization of coherent structures in a turbulent mixing layer by digital image analysis

Digital image analysis has been applied to a shadowgraph motion picture of a helium nitrogen mixing layer in order to characterize the coherent vortex structures in the flow. Both the primary spanwise coherent vortices and secondary streamwise vortices are considered. Pattern recognition algorithms were designed to take advantage of the more pronounced features of the vortices and of their temporal coherence to isolate them and to measure their characteristics. The resulting data base permits a deterministic description of the evolution of primary and seconary vortices.

Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 MSS coherent noise - Characterization and removal

The Multispectral Scanner (MSS) remote sensing instrument carried by Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 is similar to MSS instruments carried by Landsat-1, Landsat-2, and Landsat-3. However, the addition of the Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument to Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 required several design changes in the MSS instruments carried on these satellites because of the lower orbit and new satellite platform. Data from the MSS onboard the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 satellites were found to be generally comparable to the data obtained in the case of the earlier Landsat MSSs. However, a coherent noise pattern was observed in the Landsat-4 MSS data. In the present paper, the conduction of a noise analysis is discussed along with the noise characterization results, and a technique through which the Landsat-4 MSS coherent noise can be removed.

Characterization and comparison of Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper data

Engineering analyses of Thematic Mapper (TM) image data have been conducted, giving particular attention to the radiometric characterization of the sensor. While the data in general were found to be excellent, anomalies do exist in the data from both Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 TM. A summary is provided of the Landsat-4 TM image data. The present paper concentrates, however, on recent analyses of Landsat-5 TM data and comparisons of the radiometry of the two sensors. One of the specific topics covered is within-line droop, a phenomenon whereby the signal levels of the sensor change systematically during the active scan. Attention is also given to scan-correlated level shifts, an effect which raises or lowers the signal level of all pixels in a scan line or set of scan lines. A comparison of Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 radiometric corrections is also discussed.

The synthesis, characterization and thermal chemistry of modified norbornenyl PMR endcaps

As part of a program to further the understanding of the polymerization of Nadic-Endcapped PMR systems, a series of model Norbornenyl-Imides has been synthesized and their thermal behavior explored. Their syntheses and characterizations as well as their rearrangement and polymerization chemistry are described. Monomer isomerization at temperatures as low as 125 C and oligomer formation at somewhat higher temperatures are observed. Approximate relative rates for competing isomerization pathways are established and some information is obtained about the details of oligomer formation. The relationship of this data to current PMR systems is briefly discussed.

Characterization of MMIC devices for active array antennas

Certain aspects of monlithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) interconnectivity were investigated. Considerations that lead to preserving the inherently reproducible characteristics of the MMIC are proposed. It is shown that at radio frequencies (RF) greater than 20 GHz, the transition from the MMIC device to other transmission media must be an accurate RF match. It is proposed that the RF match is sufficiently critical to include the transition as part of the delivered MMIC package. The model to analyze several transitions is presented. This model consists of a succession of abrupt discontinuities in printed circuit transmission lines. The analysis of these discontinuities is achieved by the Spectral Galerkin technique, to establish the modes and mode that special effects should be coordinated by the active array antenna industry toward standardization of MMIC packaging and characterization.
