On the question of adequate hingeless rotor modeling in flight dynamics.

The somewhat controversial question of which elastic blade modes are essential in the flight mechanics of hingeless rotorcraft is studied on the basis of quasi-steady linear aerodynamics including reversed flow effects and uniform inflow. The modes are for the rotating blade, and intermode aerodynamic coupling terms are retained. The criteria for judging elastic mode effects include 19 hub moment and force derivatives, rotor trim data, rotor stability charts for lagged hub moment feedback, step gust and random gust responses. Fixed hub and constant chord blades with widely differing elasticity and inertia and with moderate twist are assumed.

Analysis and synthesis of coronal and interplanetary energetic particle, plasma, and magnetic field observations over three solar rotations.

In a previous paper (Krimigis et al., 1971), simultaneous observations in 1967 of solar particle events at low (less than 1 MeV) energies were presented. In the present paper, the full complement of simultaneous plasma, magnetic field, and energetic particle data is combined, and a complete analysis is made of all the events discussed in the original paper. The essential concept of 'collimated convection' is introduced, whereby the bulk velocity along the field lines of low-energy solar particles is independent of solar local plasma velocity, and the particles are strongly collimated along the field line with no transverse velocity component other than that of the field line itself. Collimated convection effects are shown to exist in small-scale convection and large-scale evolution of particle fluxes; the particle fluxes are, in turn, used to delineate the small-scale and large-scale evolution of the interplanetary magnetic field. Use of collimated convection is made in demonstrating a technique whereby energetic particle intensity profiles in the interplanetary medium can be related to equatorial high coronal magnetic field structures, by using the instantaneous solar wind velocity. This technique is applied in mapping particle intensities from Mariner 5 onto H alpha synoptic charts of chromospheric magnetic field structures for Carrington rotations 1523 to 1525.

A comparison of Martian albedo features with topography.

Martian albedo features photographed from the earth are compared with the topography observed by Mariner 9. Three Lambert azimuthal equal-area charts prepared to facilitate the comparison are presented. No correlation between large-scale albedos and topography can be generalized, but several different kinds of relationships seem to be indicated in particular regions. Examples of these are discussed.

SIRU utilization. Volume 2: Software description and program documentation

A complete description of the additional analysis, development and evaluation provided for the SIRU system as identified in the requirements for the SIRU utilization program is presented. The SIRU configuration is a modular inertial subsystem with hardware and software features that achieve fault tolerant operational capabilities. The SIRU redundant hardware design is formulated about a six gyro and six accelerometer instrument module package. The modules are mounted in this package so that their measurement input axes form a unique symmetrical pattern that corresponds to the array of perpendiculars to the faces of a regular dodecahedron. This six axes array provides redundant independent sensing and the symmetry enables the formulation of an optimal software redundant data processing structure with self-contained fault detection and isolation (FDI) capabilities. Documentation of the additional software and software modifications required to implement the utilization capabilities includes assembly listings and flow charts

Study of spacecraft direct readout meteorological systems

Characteristics are defined of the next generation direct readout meteorological satellite system with particular application to Tiros N. Both space and ground systems are included. The recommended space system is composed of four geosynchronous satellites and two low altitude satellites in sun-synchronous orbit. The goesynchronous satellites transmit to direct readout ground stations via a shared S-band link, relayed FOFAX satellite cloud cover pictures (visible and infrared) and weather charts (WEFAX). Basic sensor data is transmitted to regional Data Utilization Stations via the same S-band link. Basic sensor data consists of 0.5 n.m. sub-point resolution data in the 0.55 - 0.7 micron spectral region, and 4.0 n.m. resolution data in the 10.5 - 12.6 micron spectral region. The two low altitude satellites in sun-synchronous orbit provide data to direct readout ground stations via a 137 MHz link, a 400 Mhz link, and an S-band link.

A real-time digital program for estimating aircraft stability and control parameters from flight test data by using the maximum likelihood method

A computer program (Langley program C1123) has been developed for estimating aircraft stability and control parameters from flight test data. These parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood estimation procedure implemented on a real-time digital simulation system, which uses the Control Data 6600 computer. This system allows the investigator to interact with the program in order to obtain satisfactory results. Part of this system, the control and display capabilities, is described for this program. This report also describes the computer program by presenting the program variables, subroutines, flow charts, listings, and operational features. Program usage is demonstrated with a test case using pseudo or simulated flight data.

Use of ERTS-1 data: Summary report of work on ten tasks

The author has identified the following significant results. Depth mapping's for a portion of Lake Michigan and at the Little Bahama Bank test site have been verified by use of navigation charts and on-site visits. A thirteen category recognition map of Yellowstone Park has been prepared. Model calculation of atmospheric effects for various altitudes have been prepared. Radar, SLAR, and ERTS-1 data for flooded areas of Monroe County, Michigan are being studied. Water bodies can be reliably recognized and mapped using maximum likelihood processing of ERTS-1 digital data. Wetland mapping has been accomplished by slicing of single band and/or ratio processing of two bands for a single observation date. Both analog and digital processing have been used to map the Lake Ontario basin using ERTS-1 data. Operating characteristic curves were developed for the proportion estimation algorithm to determine its performance in the measurement of surface water area. The signal in band MSS-5 was related to sediment content of waters by modelling approach and by relating surface measurements of water to processed ERTS data. Radiance anomalies in ERTS-1 data could be associated with the presence of oil on water in San Francisco Bay, but the anomalies were of the same order as those caused by variations in sediment concentration and tidal flushing.

Photocathodes for use in the large space telescope program

Photocathode materials are discussed in terms of those that are presently available and those that are becoming available. Charts are given which illustrate the response curves of the representative photocathodes. It can be seen from the curves that a relatively new class of photocathodes has been developed with responses equal to or much better than commercially available photocathodes over a very wide spectral range. In particular, the solid gallium arsenide photocathode has an increased efficiency over the standard S-1 in the infrared region of almost two orders of magnitude. A table is presented which describes the principle photocathodes and lists some of the important characteristics of each.

Experimental test of plant canopy reflectance models on cotton

Spectroradiometric data on the bidirectional reflectance function was collected for a cotton canopy as a function of observer zenith angle, observer angle, and solar zenith angle. The area under study was about 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and the prevailing winds blew inland such that cloud formation increased during the day. The standard reflectance panel was constructed of plywood that had been spray painted with a flat white latex paint. Physical and optical plant parameters were measured. A time lapse mechanism was constructed to operate a 16 mm movie camera such that single frames could be exposed at intervals of one per second up to one per hour. Data were digitized from a strip chart recorder and reflectance panel measurements.
