(abstract) Transmission Electron Microscopy of Al(sub x)Ga(sub 1-x)N/SiC Multilayer Structures

The potential of wide-band-gap III-V nitrides as solar-blind ultraviolet sensors and light emitters has prompted an increasing amount of work recently, including the fabrication of the first UV sensors from as-deposited single crystal GaN. We have used high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study the microstructure of two novel developments of wide-band-gap III-V nitrides: the growth of ultra-short period GaN/AlN super lattices (digital alloys); and the incorporation of SiC layers into Al(sub x)Ga(sub 1-x)N structures. By varying the relative periods in a GaN/AlN superlattice, it should be possible to tailor the band gap of the composite to lie between the elemental values of 365 nm for GaN and 200 nm for AlN. The group IV semiconductor, SiC, has a close lattice match (< 3%) to Al(sub x)Ga(sub 1-x)N for growth on the basal plane. Demonstration of epitaxial growth for Al(sub x)Ga(sub 1-x)N/SiC multilayers could enable an extension of direct band-gap material towards the visible.

Reconfigurable Transmission Line for a Series-Fed Ku-Band Phased Array Using a Single Feed

The paper presents a novel approach to realize a lowcost phased array using a simple feeding mechanism. Specifically, a single coplanar stripline (CPS) transmission line is used to feed the antenna array elements. By controlling the CPS's dielectric properties using a movable dielectric plunger, scanning is achieved. Due to its simplicity, single feed, and no phase shifters, this approach leads to a dramatic reduction in cost which does not scale for larger arrays.

Atomic-Scale Structure and Non-Stoichiometry of Meteoritic Hibonite: A Transmission Electron Microscope Study

Hibonite (CaAl_12O_19) is a common refractory mineral in Ca-Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) in primitive meteorites. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies have identified enigmatic planar defects in different occurrences of hibonite in the Allende meteorite that give rise to strong streaking along c* in electron diffraction patterns. Atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses were used to determine the nature and origin of these planar features. HAADF images of hibonite grains reveal lamellar intergrowths of common 1.6 nm spacing, and less commonly 2.0 and 2.5 nm spacings, interspersed in stoichiometric hibonite showing 1.1 nm (002) spacing. Stoichiometric hibonite consists of alternating Ca-containing (“R”) and spinel-structured (“S”) blocks stacked in a sequence RS. In contrast, the 1.6 nm layers result from a doubled S block such that the stacking sequence is RSS, while in the widest defect observed, the stacking sequence is RSSSS. These intergrowths are epitaxial and have coherent, low-strain boundaries with the host hibonite Meteoritic hibonite shows common Ti and Mg substitution for Al in its structure. Atomic-resolution EDX maps of hibonite grains in the Allende CAI confirm the preferred site occupancy of Mg on tetragonal M3 sites in S blocks and of Ti on trigonal bipyramidal M2 and octahedral M4 sites in R blocks. Mg is highly concentrated, but Ti is absent in the planar defects where wider S blocks show Al-rich compositions compared to stoichiometric MgAl_2O_4 spinel. Therefore, Mg likely played the major role in the formation and metastability of planar defects in hibonite. Electron energy loss spectroscopy data from the Ti L_2,3 edge show the presence of mixed Ti oxidation states with ~ 15–20% of Ti as Ti^(3+) in hibonite, suggesting a direct substitution of Ti^(3+) ↔ Al^(3+) in hibonite. The remaining ~ 80–85% of Ti is present as Ti^(4+) and corresponding EDX analyses are consistent with the well-known coupled substitution 2Al^(3+) ↔ Ti^(4+) + Mg^(2+) being the major mechanism for Ti and Mg substitution in hibonite. The formation of planar defects in hibonite occurred during high-temperature nebular condensation or melting/crystallization processes. The occurrence of non-stoichiometric hibonite in the Allende CAI deviates from the mineral formation sequence predicted from equilibrium condensation models. Overall, our atomic resolution TEM observations signify non-equilibrium, kinetic-controlled crystal growth during the high-temperature formation of refractory solids in the early solar nebula.

Modeling and Mitigation of dv/dt and Transmission Line Effect for Motor Drive System in Electric Aircraft Propulsion

Due to constraints in space and structure as well as other practical limitations in aircraft system, the motor controller or electric motor are often installed far away from each other and interconnected via long cables. This amplifies the transmission line effect excited by the dv/dt PWM voltage and induces high voltage stress on the machine winding. This paper investigates the state-of-art modeling approaches for such systems, identifies several limitations in matching the tested voltage reflection waveform in terms of peak voltage, oscillation frequency and damping speed, and offers several key considerations not well covered in literature or in engineering practice. It then proposes a practical modeling methodology which, as validated by experimental results, truly captures these critical reflection voltage specs. To mitigate the high peak voltage and strong oscillation, dv/dt filter is applied and a parametric design optimization based on widely adopted LC-R topology is illustrated, which not only alleviates the voltage stress but also minimized the power loss of the passive damping resistor.

Evaluating a Cognitive Extension for the Licklider Transmission Protocol in a Spacecraft Emulation Testbed

In space communications, particularly when involving regions beyond cislunar space, the development of advanced networking solutions is essential to address the challenges posed by limited connectivity, substantial propagation delays, and radio signal variations. This study explores a data-driven approach to the Licklider Transmission Protocol (LTP), specifically focusing on dynamically adjusting the maximum payload size of segments. Prior research has emphasized the potential benefits of dynamically adjusting this parameter, introducing the concept of Cognitive LTP. This paper presents a software implementation of Cognitive LTP (CLTP) within an open-source Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) framework, specifically the High-rate Delay Tolerant Networking (HDTN), and experimentally evaluates its performance under realistic space conditions. Leveraging the Cognitive Ground Testbed (CGT), developed by NASA GRC for spacecraft communication emulation, this study effectively bridges the gap between theoretical advancements and practical applications. By thoroughly analyzing CLTP’s functionality within the CGT, this research offers insights into the practical implications of adaptive networking strategies, emphasizing the importance of conducting tests in relevant environments for the maturation of space communication technologies.

Emergency Asset Positioning for Resilient Transmission Grid Operation

In this paper we study a problem of hurricane emergency preparedness via placement of emergency generation assets prior to its strike. We present a two-stage stochastic model for choosing locations and quantities of emergency storage to help support the power grid through a hurricane event. The expectation of losses in our two-stage model is estimated using the sample average approximation. We construct damage scenarios for sample average approximation using WIND Toolkit meteorological data and fragility curves of various electric grid components. We demonstrate the efficacy of our two-stage planning model by simulating operations during Hurricane Dolly on the 2000-bus transmission test system. Our model, coupled with our scenario selection strategy, is effective at mitigating loss of load when compared to a model without emergency generation assets placed prior to an extreme event.

Developing IEEE Std 2800-Compliant Algorithms for Transmission-Connected Inverter-Based Resources: Preprint

This study addresses the compliance of Inverter-based Resources (IBRs) with the IEEE Std 2800, a leading standard that defines interconnection and interoperability requirements for IBRs integrated into transmission systems. Focusing on abnormal grid scenarios, the research evaluates the specific demands on IBRs, proposing a comprehensive controller development framework. This framework caters to maintaining ride-trhough operation or implementing strategic disconnections in line with IEEE Std 2800, alongside managing currents during voltage ride-through scenarios. The effectiveness of this proposed controller framework is rigorously validated through case studies, employing a MATLAB/Simulink model of an IBR to test its performance under diverse grid fault conditions, ensuring the IBRs' alignment with standard requirements and their robust performance in enhancing grid reliability.

Studying the Impact of IBR Modeling on the Commonly Applied Transmission Line Protective Elements

It is a well-accepted fact that detailed inverter-based resource (IBR) models are needed for electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies, especially for protection studies and protection designs. However, it is not clear which modeling aspects should be included in the EMT model to accurately represent the IBR fault responses. Therefore, this paper addresses this gap by evaluating the impact of key modeling aspects (DC source, inverter model, power control, current/voltage control, and current limiting) on the response of protective relay elements both qualitatively and quantitatively. Both grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) IBR models are comprehensively evaluated through a simplified real-world transmission network by varying the IBR modeling aspects, fault locations, and types. The insights and findings from this paper will benefit the power system protection community because this work provides modeling requirements and guidelines for IBR modeling so that correct IBR models will be used for protection scheme settings design.

Systematic Design and Experimental Demonstration of Transmission-Type Multiplexed Acoustic Metaholograms

Acoustic holograms have promising applications in sound-field reconstruction, particle manipulation, ultrasonic haptics, and therapy. This study reports on the theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigation of multiplexed acoustic holograms at both audio and ultrasonic frequencies via a rationally designed transmission-type acoustic metamaterial. The proposed metahologram is composed of two Fabry–Pérot resonant channels per unit cell, which enables the simultaneous modulation of the transmitted amplitude and phase at two desired frequencies. In contrast to conventional acoustic metamaterial-based holograms, the design strategy proposed here provides a new degree of freedom (frequency) that can actively tailor holograms that are otherwise completely passive and significantly enhances the information encoded in acoustic metamaterials. To demonstrate the multiplexed acoustic metamaterial, the projection of two different high-quality metaholograms is first shown at 14 and 17 kHz, with the patterns of the letters N and S. Then, two-channel ultrasound focusing and annular beams generation for the incident ultrasonic frequencies of 35 and 42.5 kHz are demonstrated. Furthermore, these multiplexed acoustic metaholograms offer a technical advance to tackle the rising challenges in the fields of acoustic metamaterials, architectural acoustics, and medical ultrasound.
