Smart controller with phantom inductor current sensing for switched mode power supplies

Voltage on the output terminal of an inductor is obtained as a first input signal to a control block (CB); the inductor has an input terminal connected to a power switch and driver block at a switching node. A sense input voltage is obtained on an output terminal of a sensing circuit that is not directly connected to the switching node, as a second input signal to the CB. A voltage is generated on a first output terminal of the CB and is selected such that the CB can use its first and second input signals to infer the current through the inductor. A pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is generated on a second output terminal of the CB, based on the inferred current through the inductor; the second output signal from the CB is provided to a PWM input terminal of the power switch and driver block.

Achieving American Leadership in the Electric Grid Supply Chain Factsheet

The U.S. electric grid consists of more than 22,000 generators; 55,000 substations; 642,000 miles of high-voltage lines; and 6.3 million miles of distribution lines that serve 153 million customers. To date, much of the smart grid transformation has focused on applying advanced digital information and communication technologies to the power grid to improve the system’s efficiency, flexibility, and security. To achieve the full value of grid modernization, we also need advances in grid hardware. Many critical components supporting the power grid have limited to no domestic manufacturing capacity and face complex challenges in supporting a rapid expansion of the grid to meet multiple objectives, including decarbonization goals.

Renewable-Storage Hybrids in a Decarbonized Electricity Supply

We explore the potential impacts of growing industry interest in hybrid systems comprising PV and battery technologies on the results and findings of the Solar Futures Study (2021). Through comparison of Solar Futures Study scenarios with and without PV-battery hybrid configurations enabled (in the same grid planning model), we find that the highest net-value hybrid configuration depends strongly on power sector carbon policy, which increases the value of more forward-looking designs. While the availability of PV-battery hybrid configurations primarily displaces standalone PV and battery capacity, we find that it (a) increases solar's share of total capacity and generation and (b) reduces required transmission expansion and associated costs under scenarios that combine aggressive cost reductions and power sector decarbonization policy. Results will also be presented for the complementarity and economic value of wind-PV hybrids with varying amounts of energy storage.

Pulsed Power Supply for Magnet Quench Training

Superconducting magnets typically go through aseries of spontaneous “training” quenches as their current isincreased towards its design value. To decrease the number ofthese quenches, a device has been designed to boost the magnetcurrent at the moment a quench has been detected and beforemagnet protection has been initiated. The aim of the boost is todrive the magnet coil further along towards its maximum currentwith each training quench, and hence reduce the number ofquenches required.

Considerations in Development of a Roadmap Toward Resilient and Net-Zero Energy Supply

This presentation considers issues that arise in developing a roadmap toward sustainable and secure energy for US Army and other agency installations in Europe and elsewhere. Issues include scope, baseline, conservation and efficiency, energy balance, grid integration, resilience and security, procurement and financing, performance-period issues and end-of-performance-period issues.
