Observation of atmospheric ozone by dial with Raman lasers pumped by a KrF laser

Since the XeCl excimer laser (308 nm) was first used in Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) for stratospheric ozone detection, the XeCl ozone lidar became a useful tool for the monitoring of the stratospheric ozone concentration. Shorter wavelength lasers are needed for the observation of ozone in the troposphere where the ozone concentration is about one order of magnitude smaller than in the stratosphere. In 1983, tropospheric ozone was observed with the combination of the second Stokes line (290.4 nm) of stimulated Raman scattering from methane pumped by a KrF laser and the XeCl laser line. The measurement of the ozone distribution from ground to 30 km was reported, using three Stokes lines of Raman lasers pumped by a KrF laser. At wavelengths shorter than 295 nm, the background solar radiation is effectively suppressed by atmospheric ozone. Such a solar-blind effect can be expected when two wavelengths 277 and 290.4 nm are used for DIAL ozone detection. A preliminary measurement of the day time ozone distribution in the troposphere is presented using these wavelengths generated by a KrF laser with a Raman shifter. Analysis using the lidar equation predicts the maximum detectable range is 7 km.

Low-threshold solar-pumped laser using C2F5I

Solar-pumped lasing was achieved with pentafluoroethyl iodide, C2F5I, a new alkyl-iodide. Output power and energy of 350 mW and 45 mJ were achieved. This lasant was found to have the lowest lasing threshold of any solar-pumped gas laser to date at approximately 100 solar constants. Such low threshold enables the use in space of simple, trough solar collectors.

Two-step excitation and blue fluorescence under continuous-wave pumping in Nd:YLF

Near-UV and blue fluorescence from the 4D3/2 and 4D5/2 manifolds in Nd:YLF has been observed at room temperature under CW pumping by a rhodamine 590 dye laser. Excitation to these manifolds is attributed to two-step excitation involving excited-state absorption from the 4F3/2 metastable level. A similar phenomenon has also been observed in Nd:YAG and Nd:glass. The effective excited-state absorption cross section is measured to be (2 + or - 1) x 10 to the -20th sq cm at 587.4 nm in the pi polarization, and the peak effective stimulated emission cross section is measured to be 5 x 10 to the -20th sq cm at 411.7 nm, also in the pi polarization. Estimated laser threshold at 411.7 nm for two-step pumping at 587.4 nm is 70 mW.

Diode-pumped continuous-wave Nd:glass laser

The paper reports on diode-laser pumping of monolithic Nd:glass laser oscillators. End pumping with a single-stripe diode laser, a threshold of 2.2 mW, and a slope efficiency of 42 percent were observed on a 2-mm-long oscillator with a mode radius of 35 microns. The oscillator generated 2.5 mW of single-ended output power in many axial modes.

Pumping the stellar hydroxyl maser

IRAS far-IR flux data for 163 OH maser stars were analyzed to quantify the contributions 35 and 53 microns inversions make to pumping of the hydroxyl maser. The 35 microns transition is from the 3,3 ground state to the 1,5 rotationally excited level and subsequent decay; the 53 microns transition is a change from the ground state to the 1,3 excited level and relaxation. The stars examined included Mira, short period semi-regular and long-period semi-regular variables. Both transition lines had rough parity in contributing to the approximately 8 percent pumping efficiency at 1612 MHz. However, the individual contributions of the lines could not be determined for the stellar population studied.

Design and test of a mechanically pumped two-phase thermal control flight experiment

A flight experiment of a mechanically pumped two-phase ammonia thermal control system, incorporating a number of new component designs, has been assembled and tested in a 1-g environment. Additional microgravity tests are planned on the Space Shuttle when Shuttle flights are resumed. The primary purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the operation of a mechanically pumped two-phase ammonia system, with emphasis on determining the performance of an evaporative Two-Phase Mounting Plate. The experiment also evaluates the performance of other specially designed components, such as the two-phase reservoir for temperature control, condensing radiator/heat sink, spiral tube boiler, and pressure drop experiment. The 1-g tests have shown that start-up of the two-phase experiment is easily accomplished with only a partial fill of ammonia. The experiment maintained a constant mounting plate temperature without flow rate controls over a very wide range of heat loads, flow rates, inlet flow conditions and exit qualities. The tests also showed the successful operation of the mounting plate in the heat sharing condensing mode.

Multiple-pass laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG amplifier - Design

A method for designing a miniature laser-diode-pumped Nd-YAG laser amplifier based on total internal reflection and a multiple-pass slab geometry is described. This new design leads to a simple and practical configuration which allows multiple-pass amplification to be accomplished fairly easily by utilizing an optical arrangement with external mirrors. It is suggested that this type of miniature Nd-YAG amplifier combined with a laser diode-pumped Nd:YAG oscillator could result in an excellent laser-ranging source laser.

Overview and future direction for blackbody solar-pumped lasers

A review of solar-pumped blackbody lasers is given which addresses their present status and suggests future research directions. The blackbody laser concept is one system proposed to scale to multimegawatt power levels for space-to-space power transmissions for such applications as onboard spacecraft electrical or propulsion needs. Among the critical technical issues are the scalability to high powers and the laser wavelength which impacts the transmission optics size as well as the laser-to-electric converter at the receiver. Because present blackbody solar-pumped lasers will have laser wavelengths longer than 4 microns, simple photovoltaic converters cannot be used, and transmission optics will be large. Thus, future blackbody laser systems should emphasize near visible laser wavelengths.

Continuous-wave operation of a room-temperature, diode-laser-pumped, 946-nm Nd:YAG laser

Single-stripe diode-laser-pumped operation of a continuous-wave 946-nm Nd:YAG laser with less than 10-mW threshold has been demonstrated. A slope efficiency of 16 percent near threshold was shown with a projected slope efficiency well above a threshold of 34 percent based on results under Rhodamine 6G dye-laser pumping. Nonlinear crystals for second-harmonic generation of this source were evaluated. KNbO3 and periodically poled LiNbO3 appear to be the most promising.

Coupled Lorenz systems in an optically pumped CH3F laser

The output emission of a short CH3F metallic waveguide laser pumped by an injection-locked CO2 transversely excited atmosphere laser is studied experimentally. The output is found to be extremely unpredictable when lasing occurs in both the excited and ground vibrational states on two separate transitions (496 and 452 microns, respectively). The dynamics and sensitivity to initial conditions are explained in terms of two Lorenz lasers with pump coupled population inversions.

Optical bistability in self-pumped phase-conjugate ring resonators

Bistable oscillations have been observed in BaTiO3 pumped by a single-mode 30-mW (488-nm) argon-ion laser, which is used simultaneously as a ring passive phase conjugator (RPPC) and as a unidirectional ring resonator (UDRR). Strong oscillations in the UDRR increase the threshold coupling strength required for oscillation in the RPPC. The oscillations in the RPPC reduce the fanning in the crystal necessary for the startup of oscillation in the UDRR. Auxiliary resonators pumped by the RPPC are also bistable with the UDRR. Similar bistable oscillations have been observed when the crystal is used simultaneously as a RPPC and as a linear passive phase conjugator.

Perfluorobutyl iodides as gain media for a solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier

The effectiveness of t-C4F9I and n-C4F9I as gain media for a space-based solar-pumped iodine photodissociation laser is investigated experimentally. The optically coupled flashlamp/amplifier-tube apparatus described by Hwang et al. (1986) is employed, driving the amplifier with 4-microsec 4.2-mJ TEM(00) pulses from a flashlamp-pumped laser oscillator; the variation of amplification with energy-extraction time was monitored by inserting a delay of up to 1 msec between the firing of the two flashlamps and measuring the delay between the optical pulses. The results are presented graphically and briefly characterized. The performance of t-C4F9I is found to be better than that of n-C4F9I (or n-C3F7I), with an absorption band shifted toward the visible (for improved utilization of solar radiation), higher gain (by a factor of 2) at all delay times, and better chemical reversibility. The gain did not depend significantly on temperature in any of the iodides.

High power CW iodine laser pumped by solar simulator

An iodine photodissociation laser was pumped by a long Ar arc as the solar simulator to produce a 10-W CW output. Continuous lasing for 1 h was achieved with a flow of the laser material n-C3F7I. The 10-W CW output is the highest produced to date and establishes the feasibility of developing a solar-pumped laser for space power transmission.

Characteristics and kinetics of laser-pumped Ti:sapphire oscillators

The experimental performance of a gain-switched Ti:sapphire laser oscillator pumped by a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system is presented for a variety of operating conditions. A theoretical model developed for this oscillator predicts well its performance. The observed curved input-output energy plots for the oscillator result from the kinetics of gain switching and fluorescence decay during the gain buildup period. Fluorescence decay also produces observed oscillator thresholds higher than those normally predicted by the standard gain-equals-loss condition. Gain-switched parasitic modes, with a higher threshold but shorter round-trip time than the resonator mode, cause the resonator mode to oscillate only over a finite range of pump energies. Spectroscopic investigations show that the Ti:sapphire cross-section spectrum is well fit by a Poisson distribution, giving a peak cross section of 3 x 10 to the -19th sq cm for the pi polarization.

Performance test of a laboratory pump for liquid transfer based on the fountain effect

A laboratory scale pump which determines the flow characteristics of a heater-activated all-metal thermomechanical fountain-effect pump (FEP) is evaluated. Results are presented on the functional dependence of the fountain pressure difference versus mass throughput. A modified Vote et al. (1971) power law approximation is used to obtain the flow rate as a function of the driving force. Despite a large nominal pore size of the porous plug used for the FEP, flow rates of up to 10 liter/hr sq cm have been obtained.

Experiments on transferring helium II with a thermomechanical pump

Porous plugs were tested as thermomechanical pumps for the transfer of helium II from one dewar to another through a transfer line and two valves. SEM images for two different size porous plugs are presented. The present pump design was shown to transfer 80 liters at a maximum flow rate of 90 liters/hr. Temperature, pressure, flow rate, and heater power data are compared with theoretical results.
