Growing crystals from eutectic melts

Inverted Bridgman Method yields crystals of higher homogeneity and better structure than those grown by ordinary Bridgman method. Process controls thermotransport by holding molten alloy in known temperature for known period of time. Rapid cooling quenches in state of segregation. Method is applicable to other eutectiferous systems where thermotransport is appreciable.

Snow wetness measurements for melt forecasting

A microwave technique for directly measuring snow pack wetness in remote installations is described. The technique, which uses satellite telemetry for data gathering, is based on the attenuation of a microwave beam in transmission through snow.

de Sitter's theory 'melts' Europa's polar cap

In photoelectric observations of a series of occultations of the Jovian satellite Europa by the Jovian satellite Io it was observed that increasingly larger fractions of the north polar region of the former were covered at mid-event with each successive occultation. One of the possible explanations of the observed phenomena involves the existence of a bright north polar cap for Europa. The reported investigation shows that a second explanation may be more plausible. This explanation is related to the possibility that at mid-event the projected minimum distance between the centers of the satellites was smaller than predicted by Sampson's theory.

The Shaw meteorite - History of a chondrite consisting of impact-melted and metamorphic lithologies

Three intermingled lithologies are identified in the Shaw L-group chondrite: a light-colored lithology with a poikilitic texture, consisting of olivine and augite crystals surrounded by larger orthopyroxene grains; a dark-colored lithology containing remnant chondrules and exhibiting a microgranular texture; and a gray lithology which appears to be intermediate between the other two. Contrary to published opinions, the Shaw meteorite contains normal L-group chondrite abundances of metal and troilite, though these phases are irregularly distributed. The lithological analyses suggest that 4.52 Byr ago an impact took place on the L-group chondrite parent object of Shaw.
