The present invention discloses a gasifier and/or a gasification process that provides a long, uniform temperature zone in the gasifier, regardless of the particle size, chemical composition, and moisture content of the fuel by sandwiching a reduction zones between two oxidation zones. The gasifier and/or gasification process has a char that is more energy-dense and almost devoid of moisture that affords for an additional (or char) oxidation zone with a temperature that is higher than a first oxidation zone which is closer to a evaporation and devolatilization zone. As such, the additional (or char) oxidation zone contributes to augmenting the reduction zone temperature, thereby providing a favorable dual impact in improving syngas composition and near-complete conversion of the tar.
A magneto-electronic device may include: a spin-orbit torque (SOT) generator layer; a magnetic memory layer; and/or sensing electrodes configured to measure a Hall effect of the magnetic memory layer. The SOT generator layer may include topological insulator material, and the magnetic memory layer may include ferromagnetic material with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. A magneto-electronic device may include: a spin-orbit torque (SOT) generator layer; a first magnetic memory layer on the SOT generator layer; an insulating layer on the first magnetic memory layer; and/or a second magnetic memory layer on the insulating layer. The SOT generator layer may include topological insulator material. The first magnetic memory layer and the second magnetic memory layer may include ferromagnetic material with either perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or in-plane magnetic anisotropy.
A compact particle accelerator can include two or more cavities disposed along an axis of the particle accelerator, each of which is coupled to two or more drivers. The accelerator can also include a power supply coupled to the two or more drivers such that a particle beam traveling along the axis is accelerated. The power supply can be an interface with a commercial power outlet, battery power, or a combination thereof depending upon the use case. Example configurations of the accelerator include hand held or mobile devices that are capable of delivering up to and greater than a 1 MeV electron beam.

A method includes interpreting NOx data indicative of an amount of NOx exiting an engine and an amount of NOx exiting an exhaust aftertreatment system coupled to the engine, determining a NOx conversion efficiency fault is present based on the amount of NOx exiting the engine and the amount of NOx exiting the exhaust aftertreatment system, and determining at least one of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst of the exhaust aftertreatment system and a diesel particulate filter having a coating of a SCR reaction catalyst (DPF-SCR) of the exhaust aftertreatment system are responsible for the NOx conversion efficiency fault based on at least one of a reductant slip amount and a NOx conversion value across at least one of the SCR catalyst and the DPF-SCR.

The present disclosure relates to a capacitive deionization (CDI) system for desalinating salt water. The system may have a capacitor formed by spaced apart first and second electrodes, which enable a fluid flow containing salt water to pass either between them or through them. An input electrical power source is configured to generate an electrical forcing signal between the two electrodes. The electrical forcing signal represents a periodic signal including at least one of voltage or current, and which can be represented as a Fourier series. One component of the Fourier series is a constant, and a second component of the Fourier series is a sinusoidal wave of non-zero frequency which has the highest amplitude of the additive components of the Fourier series. The amplitude of the sinusoidal wave component is between 0.85 and 1.25 times the amplitude of the periodic signal.
