Flight investigation of an underwing nacelle installation of three variable-flap ejector nozzles

A modified F-106B aircraft with underwing engine nacelles was flight tested to investigate airframe installation effects on ejector nozzles. Nozzle thrust coefficients, boattail drag coefficients, and boundary layer characteristics were obtained for the three nozzles. All the nozzles were geometrically similar and had 15 deg conical boattails with juncture radii of curvature equal to 0.5 maximum nozzle diameter. The effects of boattail location relative to the wing trailing edge and the ejector to primary nozzle exit diameter ratio were investigated. Shortening the length by 0.48 nozzle diameter lowered the transonic boattail drag rise Mach number from 0.97 to 0.95. Decreasing the nozzle exit diameter, which reduced the ejector to primary nozzle exit diameter ratio from 1.30 to 1.18, increased the gross thrust coefficient 4.8 percent.

Longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a large scale model with a swept wing and augmented jet flap in ground effect

The investigation of the in-ground-effect, longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a large scale swept augmentor wing model is presented, using 40 x 80 ft wind tunnel. The investigation was conducted at three ground heights; h/c equals 2.01, 1.61, and 1.34. The induced effect of underwing nacelles, was studied with two powered nacelle configurations. One configuration used four JT-15D turbofans while the other used two J-85 turbojet engines. Two conical nozzles on each J-85 were used to deflect the thrust at angles from 0 to 120 deg. Tests were also performed without nacelles to allow comparison with previous data from ground effect.

Investigation of noise from full-scale high bypass engine and blown flap system

A summary is presented of an acoustic test program for investigating engine noise suppression and jet/flap interaction noise associated with an EBF STOL powered lift system. A highly suppressed TF-34 engine and EBF wing were used in the investigation. The engine was suppressed 21 PndB to a level of 94 PndB. An UTW powered lift system was tested with conventional, mixer, and decayer-type nozzles. The configuration with velocity decayer nozzle and acoustically treated shroud had the lowest noise (98 PndB). An OTW configuration with non-decayer nozzle was about 10 db quieter than the corresponding UTW system. UTW and OTW noise data are compared with scale model correlations.

Flap-lag dynamics of hingeless helicopter blades at moderate and high advance ratios

Equations for large amplitude coupled flaplag motion of a hingeless elastic helicopter blade in forward flight are derived. Only a torsionally rigid blade exicted by quasi-steady aerodynamic loads is considered. The effects of reversed flow together with some new terms due to forward flight are included. Using Galerkin's method the spatial dependence is eliminated and the equations are linearized about a suitable equilibrium position. The resulting system of equations is solved using multivariable Floquet-Liapunov theory, and the transition matrix at the end of the period is evaluated by two separate methods. Results illustrating the effects of forward flight and various important blade parameters on the stability boundaries are presented.
