Resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a light field of elliptically polarised waves

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances excited by a strong two-frequency field are considered for various values of the total angular momenta of the ground (F{sub g}) and excited (F{sub e}) states at a degenerated optical closed transition F{sub g} → F{sub e}. The light field is formed by two co-propagating waves with arbitrary elliptical polarisations. The process of spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground state is shown to determine the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1. The results obtained generalise the classification of transitions into ‘bright’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1) and ‘dark’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F and F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F – 1) transitions with respect to the direction of a subnatural resonance. Closed anisotropic cosmological models.

Derivation of a new exact solution to Einstein's equations representing homogeneous nonisotropic cosmological models of a closed universe containing electromagnetic and scalar fields. This solution reduces to a generalization of Brill's electromagnetic universe when the scalar field vanishes, and to the Taub-NUT-M space when both these fields vanish. The solutions also satisfy the scalar tensor equations and represent a universe containing electromagnetic fields and a source-free solution to the scalar-tensor equations representing a closed universe.

An improved computational technique for calculating electromagnetic forces and power absorptions generated in spherical and deformed body in levitation melting devices

An improved computational technique for calculating the electromagnetic force field, the power absorption and the deformation of an electromagnetically levitated metal sample is described. The technique is based on the volume integral method, but represents a substantial refinement; the coordinate transformation employed allows the efficient treatment of a broad class of rotationally symmetrical bodies. Computed results are presented to represent the behavior of levitation melted metal samples in a multi-coil, multi-frequency levitation unit to be used in microgravity experiments. The theoretical predictions are compared with both analytical solutions and with the results of previous computational efforts for the spherical samples and the agreement has been very good. The treatment of problems involving deformed surfaces and actually predicting the deformed shape of the specimens breaks new ground and should be the major usefulness of the proposed method.

Coherent Electromagnetic Emission from Relativistic Magnetized Shocks

Relativistic magnetized shocks are a natural source of coherent emission, offering a plausible radiative mechanism for fast radio bursts (FRBs). We present first-principles 3D simulations that provide essential information for the FRB models based on shocks: the emission efficiency, spectrum, and polarization. The simulated shock propagates in an e ± plasma with magnetization σ > 1 . The measured fraction of shock energy converted to coherent radiation is ≃ 10 -3 σ -1 , and the energy-carrying wave number of the wave spectrum is ≃ 4ω c /c, where ω c is the upstream gyrofrequency. The ratio of the O-mode and X-mode energy fluxes emitted by the shock is ≃ 0.4σ -1 . The dominance of the X mode at σ >> 1 is particularly strong, approaching 100% in the spectral band around 2ω c . We also provide a detailed description of the emission mechanism for both X and O modes.

Electromagnetic induction by finite wavenumber source fields in 2-D lateral heterogeneities - The transverse electric mode

Electromagnetic induction in a laterally homogeneous earth is analyzed in terms of a source field with finite dimensions. Attention is focused on a time-varying two-dimensional current source directed parallel to the strike of a two-dimensional anomalous structure within the earth, i.e., the E-parallel mode. The spatially harmonic source field is expressed as discontinuities in the magnetic (or electric) field of the current in the source. The model is applied to describing the magnetic gradients across megatectonic features, and may be used to predict the magnetic fields encountered by a satellite orbiting above the ionosphere.

Pathways to excitation of atoms with bicircular laser pulses

We study the excitation of the hydrogen atom by bichromatic circularly polarized laser pulses using numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The results are in agreement with the selection rules for multiphoton processes in such fields, namely, excited states are populated in which orbital angular momentum and magnetic quantum numbers are either both odd or both even, independent of the relative helicity, peak intensity, and pulse duration of the pulses. For co-rotating pulses the results show that excitation predominantly proceeds to states with magnetic quantum number of the same helicity as the laser pulses. Besides pathways via direct photon absorption from the ground state our results indicate that a transfer of population among the Rydberg states occurs via Λ-type transitions. In the case of counter-rotating pulses the largest excitation probability is found for Rydberg states that differ in magnetic quantum number by Δm=±3. This pattern allows us to estimate how many photons from each of the two bichromatic fields have been absorbed. Finally, we confirm that a population in Rydberg states beyond a maximum orbital angular quantum number is unlikely.

Two-color-driven enhanced high-order harmonic generation in solids

We theoretically investigate the emission of high-harmonic (HH) radiation in model crystals by bichromatic few-cycle driving pulses that are composed as the phase-coherent superposition of a mid-infrared fundamental pulse and its second harmonic. Adjusting the model-crystal parameters to reproduce the lowest band gap of MgO, we examine the extent to which distinct domains of the HH spectrum can be controlled and enhanced by tuning the temporal profile of the bichromatic driving laser electric field. We change the driving-pulse shape by varying its fundamental-versus-second-harmonic pulse amplitude ratio and delay, while keeping the energy of the driving laser pulse fixed. For suitable amplitude ratios and delays, we find an up to fivefold enhancement of the spectral HH yield and significant shifts of the HH cutoff frequency.

Photoelectron spectra in circularly and elliptically polarized laser pulses

We present results of numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and theoretical analysis concerning the interaction of a rare gas atom with circularly and elliptically polarized laser pulses. In agreement with recent observation in circularly polarized fields, the photoelectron energy spectra for counterrotating electrons are peaked at lower kinetic energy than those for corotating electrons. We show that this difference can be interpreted as being due to the additional pathways to ionization that are available for the counterrotating electrons only. Furthermore, our results show, in agreement with earlier work, that the offset angle by which the emission of electrons is rotated in an elliptically polarized field increases with each successive above-threshold ionization (ATI) order and is larger for the emission from counterrotating states as compared to that from corotating states. As a result, a simple model based on the interference and relative phase difference between just three continuum states provides remarkable agreement and once again emphasizes the importance of the additional ionization pathways available for the counterrotating electrons.
