Structural, magnetic, and electronic evolution of the spin-ladder system BaFe 2 S 3-x Se x with isoelectronic substitution

We reWe report experimental studies of a series of BaF e 2 S 3 - x Se x ( 0 ≤ $x$ ≤ 3 ) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron-diffraction, muon-spin-relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from $C$ $mcm$ ( BaFe 2 Se 3 ) to $P$ $nma$ ( BaFe 2 Se 3 ) was identified around $x$ = 0.7 - 1 . Neutron-diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the Néel temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from ~120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe 2+ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe 2 Se 3 remains robust for 1.5 ≤ $x$ ≤ 3 with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the Néel temperature from 250 K ( $x$ = 3 ) to 225 K ( $x$ = 1.5 ). The sample with $x$ = 1 near the $C$ $mcm$ and $P$ $nma$ border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all $x$ , but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the $C$ $mcm$ stripe phase to the $P$ $nma$ block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe 2 S 3-x Se x system.

Tuning of charge density wave transitions in LaAu x Sb 2 by pressure and Au stoichiometry

Two charge density wave transition can be detected in La Au Sb 2 at ~ 110 and ~ 90 K by careful electrical transport measurements. Whereas control of the Au site occupancy in La Au x Sb 2 (for 0.9 ≲ x ≲ 1.0 ) can suppress each of these transitions by ~ 80 K , the application of hydrostatic pressure can completely suppress the lower transition by ~ 7.5 kbar and the upper transition by ~ 17 kbar . Here, clear anomalies in the resistance as well as the magnetoresistance are observed to coincide with the pressures at which the charge density wave transitions are driven to zero.

High-pressure study of the low- Z rich superconductor Be 22 Re

With T c ~ 9.6K, Be 22 Re exhibits one of the highest critical temperatures among Be-rich compounds. We have carried out a series of high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on this compound to 30 GPa. The data show that the critical temperature T c is suppressed gradually at a rate of dT c /dP = –0.05K/GPa. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic and phonon density of states (DOS) and the measured critical temperature, we estimate that the rapid increase in lattice stiffening in Be 22 Re overwhelms a moderate increase in the electron-ion interaction with pressure, resulting in the decrease in T c . Furthermore, high-pressure x-ray diffraction measurements show that the ambient pressure crystal structure of Be 22 Re persists to at least 154 GPa.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA 2 Pn 2 (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintlphase single crystals of EuMg 2 Sb 2 with the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations find an activated behavior with intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Néel temperature T N = 8.0(2) K. Here, zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu spins (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane and the Eu spins in adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically. Eu-moment reorientation within the ab planes in the trigonal AFM domains associated with a very weak inplane magnetic anisotropy is also evident below T N at low fields < 0.05 T. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg 2 Sb 2 implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tuning the electronic states of these materials. Our DFT studies also suggest, besides the SOC, the more electronegative and smaller Sb than Bi shifts the low-lying conduction bands along the Γ-A direction to higher energy, resulting in an indirect bulk band gap between the Γ and M points for EuMg 2 Sb 2 .

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB 2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB 2 exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature T c as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m structure to an MgB 2 -like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high T c values among diborides are not restricted to MgB 2 as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high T c values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB 2 structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m at high temperatures across the Nb 1–x ⁢Mo x B 2 series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB 2 adopts the MgB 2 crystal structure. Finally, high magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb x ⁢Mo 1–x⁢ B 2 exhibits superconductivity with T c as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 unraveled by hydrostatic pressure

Noncentrosymmetric Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has attracted a lot of attention as a candidate for strongly correlated topological material, yet its experimental ground state remains a matter of contention. Two conflicting scenarios have emerged from a comparison to the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 : Either Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 is a spin-orbit-driven topological semimetal or a Kondo insulator with smaller Kondo coupling than its Pt counterpart. Here, we determine the ground state of Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 via electrical resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure, which is a clean symmetry-preserving tuning parameter that increases hybridization but virtually preserves spin-orbit coupling. Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 becomes more insulating under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which is a signature of Ce-based Kondo insulating materials in the considered pressure range. Its small zero-pressure gap increases quadratically with pressure, similar to the behavior observed in the series Ce 3 Bi 4 (Pt 1 - x Pd x ) 3 , which indicates that Pt substitution and applied pressure have a similar effect. Finally, our result not only demonstrates that Kondo coupling, rather than spin-orbit coupling, is the main tuning parameter in this class of materials, but it also establishes that Ce 3 Bi 4 Pd 3 has a narrow-gap Kondo insulating ground state.

Superconducting properties and gap structure of the topological superconductor candidate Ti 3 Sb

Here, we present a study of the superconducting properties of the candidate topological superconductor Ti 3 Sb. Electrical transport measurements show zero resistance with a T c,onset of ≈ 5.9 K with a transition width ΔT c ≈ 0.6 K. The superconducting phase boundaries as derived from magnetotransport and magnetic susceptibility measurements agree well. We estimate an upper critical field B c2 (0) ≈ 4.5 T. A Ginzburg-Landau (GL) analysis yields values of the coherence length and penetration depth of ξ = 6.2 nm and λ = 340 nm, respectively, and a GL parameter κ ≈ 55, indicating extreme type-II behavior. Furthermore, we observe a step height in the specific heat $\frac{Δ C_e}{γ T_c}$ ≈ 1.61 ± 0.24 (with T c = 4.8 ± 0.4 K), a value larger than the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43, suggesting modest coupling. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth via the tunnel-diode oscillator technique down to ≈ 450 mK show a full superconducting gap, consistent with a conventional s-wave gap structure.

Observation of cupratelike nonlinear terahertz responses in superconducting infinite-layer nickelates via two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

The 𝑑-wave pairing symmetry in newly discovered infinite-layer nickelates remains highly debated compared to the widely accepted 𝑑-wave superconductivity in cuprates, despite recent intense efforts using equilibrium optical and electrical transport measurements. A complementary approach involves characterizing THz coherent nonlinear responses, which is currently lacking but needed, as it would offer new insights into the superconducting gap structure by characterizing Higgs modes and quasiparticle excitations. Here, in this study, we report THz 2D coherent spectroscopy (THz-2DCS) responses from the superconducting state in an infinite-layer nickelate. The 2D spectra clearly demonstrate the absence of hallmark signatures of 𝑠-wave pairing symmetry, such as resonant 2⁢Δ peaks at superconducting gaps. Instead, we observe gapless 2D spectra in the nickelate, centered around the THz driving frequency, with no noticeable shift as the temperature increases. These findings closely resemble the nodal superconductivity behavior expected in cuprates. Together with our simulations, these findings suggest that 2⁢Δ signatures in the 2D spectra of 𝑑-wave gap structures can be obscured by significant nodal quasiparticle excitations at arbitrarily low energies. This contrasts with the long-lived Higgs modes, observed as distinct 2⁢Δ peaks in a controlled THz-2DCS experiment on niobium, a representative example of dirty-limit s-wave superconductors. Our results have implications for understanding the unconventional superconductivity in nickelates and highlight the need to explore their coherent nonlinear dynamics.

Continuous Mott Transition in Moiré Semiconductors: Role of Long-Wavelength Inhomogeneities

Recent experiments in moiré transition metal dichalcogenide materials have reported the observation of a continuous bandwidth-tuned transition from a metal to a paramagnetic Mott insulator at a fixed filling of one electron per moiré unit cell. The electrical transport measurements reveal a number of puzzling features that are seemingly at odds with the theoretical expectations of an interaction-induced, but disorder-free, bandwidth-tuned metal-insulator transition. In this Letter, we include the effects of long-wavelength inhomogeneities, building on the results for a continuous metal-insulator transition at fixed filling in the clean limit. We examine the effects of mesoscale inhomogeneities near the critical point on transport using the framework of random resistor networks, highlighting the salient differences from a simple percolation-based picture. Finally, we place our results in the context of recent and ongoing experiments.

Gate-Controlled Anyon Generation and Detection in Kitaev Spin Liquids

Reliable manipulation of non-Abelian Ising anyons supported by Kitaev spin liquids may enable intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we introduce a standalone scheme for both generating and detecting individual Ising anyons using tunable gate voltages in a heterostructure containing a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid and a monolayer semiconductor. In this study, the key ingredients of our setup are a Kondo coupling to stabilize an Ising anyon in the spin liquid around each electron in the semiconductor, and a large charging energy to allow control over the electron numbers in distinct gate-defined regions of the semiconductor. In particular, a single Ising anyon can be generated at a disk-shaped region by gate tuning its electron number to one, while it can be interferometrically detected by measuring the electrical conductance of a ring-shaped region around it whose electron number is allowed to fluctuate between zero and one. We provide concrete experimental guidelines for implementing our proposal in promising candidate materials like α-RuCl 3 .

Capping layer influence and isotropic in-plane upper critical field of the superconductivity at the FeSe / SrTiO 3 interface

Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO 3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (T c ) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO 3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magnetotransport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers that provide distinct charge transfer into FeSe: insulating FeTe, nonmetallic Te, and metallic Zr. Our results show that FeTe provides an optimal cap that barely influences the inherent T c found in pristine FeSe/SrTiO 3 , while the transfer of holes from a nonmetallic Te cap completely suppresses superconductivity and leads to insulating behavior. Finally, we used ex situ magnetoresistance measurements in FeTe capped FeSe films to extract the angular dependence of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field. Our observations reveal an almost isotropic in-plane upper critical field, providing insight into the symmetry and pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe.

Differences in the resistive and thermodynamic properties of the single crystalline chiral superconductor candidate SrPtAs

The locally noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral d-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P⁢6 3 /mmc with lattice parameters a=4.2445⁢(4) Å and c=8.9513⁢(18) Å. Additionally, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T c ~2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Surprisingly, heat capacity data show only a small bulk transition at 0.7 K. We discuss the possible origins of the discrepancy between the various measurements.

Structural transition and anisotropic magnetism in disordered Zintl phase Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8

Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.

Effects of dimensionality on the electronic structure of Ruddlesden-Popper chromates Sr n+1 ⁢Cr n ⁢O 3⁢n+1

Transition-metal oxides host a wide variety of electronic phenomena that can be significantly influenced by the effective dimensionality of the system under consideration. These include charge, spin, and orbital orderings, as well as unconventional superconductivity. In this context, the Ruddlesden-Popper chromates Sr n+1 Cr n O 3n+1 emerge as a particularly intriguing series of materials. Formally, the chromium atom displays a rather special 4+ oxidation state throughout the entire series. However, the effective dimensionality changes from quasi-2D to 3D as n increases from 1 to ∞. As a result, the insulating antiferromagnetic behavior observed for n = 1, 2, 3 transforms into itinerant antiferromagnetism with reduced transition temperature for the n = ∞ end member of the series, i.e., the perovskite SrCrO 3 . Further, distinct orbital orderings with exotic singlet states have been predicted for these systems. However, the lack of single-crystal bulk or thin-film samples has made experimental progress difficult. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of thin films of the perovskite SrCrO 3 and the associated layered chromates via oxide molecular beam epitaxy for n = 1 to n = 5. Our electrical transport measurements reveal a gradual evolution from a strongly insulating state in Sr 2 CrO 4 to a metallic state in the end member SrCrO 3 . X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrate a varying hybridization strength of the Cr 4+ valence electrons across the series, helping to explain the trend in conduction. Finally, density functional theory calculations further confirm the observed transport trend and identify additional distortions present in the system.

Controlling structural phases of Sn through lattice engineering

Topology and superconductivity, two distinct phenomena, offer unique insight into quantum properties and their applications in quantum technologies, spintronics, and sustainable energy technologies. Tin (Sn) plays a pivotal role here as an element because of its two structural phases, α-Sn exhibiting topological characteristics and β-Sn showing superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate precise control of these phases in Sn thin films using molecular beam epitaxy with systematically varied lattice parameters of the buffer layer. The Sn films exhibit either β-Sn or α-Sn phases as the buffer layer's lattice constant varies from 6.10 Å to 6.48 Å, spanning the range from GaSb (like InAs) to InSb. Further, the crystal structures of α- and β-Sn films are characterized by x-ray diffraction and confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Atomic force microscopy validates the smooth, continuous surface morphology. Electrical transport measurements further verify the phases: resistance drop near 3.7 K for β-Sn superconductivity and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations for α-Sn topological characteristics. Density functional theory shows that α-Sn is stable under tensile strain and β-Sn under compressive strain, aligning well with experimental findings. Hence, this study introduces a platform controlling Sn phases through lattice engineering, enabling innovative applications in quantum technologies and beyond.

Investigating the electrical transport properties and electronic structure of Zr 2 ⁢CuSb 3

The checkerboard lattice has been proposed to host topological flat bands as a result of destructive interference among its various electronic hopping terms. However, it has proven challenging to realize experimentally due to the difficulty of isolating this structure from any significant out-of-plane bonding while maintaining structural integrity. Here, in this study, single crystals of Zr 2 CuSb 3 , a potential candidate for the checkerboard lattice, were synthesized using the solution (self-flux) method, and their structure was confirmed via x-ray diffraction. Electrical-transport measurements indicate metallic behavior with electron-dominated carriers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals multiple electron pockets and significant k z broadening due to its large c axis and low dispersion features in k z . Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations further disentangle the contributions from each high-symmetry plane, providing a comprehensive characterization of electronic behavior. The DFT calculations were then used to determine the orbital contributions of the bands and detect the out-of-plane bonding which prevented the flat bands from forming.

Evaluation of PV Module Packaging Strategies of Monofacial and Bifacial PERC Using Degradation Pathway Network Modeling

As the PV industry is rapidly expanding, it is important to thoroughly investigate the long-term impact of packaging strategies on the performance of PV modules. In this study, the variants in sets differ on the basis of manufacturer (A/B), encapsulant (EVA/POE), rear encapsulant (UV-cutoff/opaque/transparent), module architecture (GB/DG) and cell type (monofacial/bifacial). The minimodules were exposed for 2520 hours in modified damp heat, with or without full spectrum light. Every 504 hours, stepwise electrical characterization techniques were employed to track changes in minimodules. Degradation pathway modeling using network structural equation modeling was employed to study pairwise relationships between variables and service lifetime prediction in minimodules. Through this study, differences in quality control are identified in minimodules made by different manufacturers. Minimodules with UV-cutoff rear encapsulant show relatively better stability, whereas the ones with opaque rear encapsulant show greater power loss. In addition, GB having UV-cutoff rear encapsulation and GB with POE having opaque rear encapsulation were identified to be stable as they lack a best model fit. Here, the primary power loss mechanism in degrading variants is interconnect corrosion.
