U.S. Solar Photovoltaic System and Energy Storage Cost Benchmarks: Q1 2021

NREL has been modeling U.S. solar photovoltaic (PV) system costs since 2009. This year, our report benchmarks costs of U.S. PV for residential, commercial, and utility-scale systems, with and without storage, built in the first quarter of 2021 (Q1 2021). The methodology includes bottom-up accounting for all system and project-development costs incurred when installing residential, commercial, and utility-scale systems and it models the capital costs and levelized cost of energy for such systems.

Space shuttle low cost/risk avionics study

All work breakdown structure elements containing any avionics related effort were examined for pricing the life cycle costs. The analytical, testing, and integration efforts are included for the basic onboard avionics and electrical power systems. The design and procurement of special test equipment and maintenance and repair equipment are considered. Program management associated with these efforts is described. Flight test spares and labor and materials associated with the operations and maintenance of the avionics systems throughout the horizontal flight test are examined. It was determined that cost savings can be achieved by using existing hardware, maximizing orbiter-booster commonality, specifying new equipments to MIL quality standards, basing redundancy on cost effective analysis, minimizing software complexity and reducing cross strapping and computer-managed functions, utilizing compilers and floating point computers, and evolving the design as dictated by the horizontal flight test schedules.

A look at V/STOL for business aircraft.

Attempt to ascertain the economic viability of the V/STOL capability for business aircraft and the manner in which this viability depends on the aircraft concept. A cost-benefit analysis is presented which indicates that a VTOL business aircraft would be more viable economically than a contemporary turbine-powered business aircraft. The combination of traveler's time value and trip distance for which each aircraft dominates is shown. The significance of disk loading in V/STOL concept application is discussed, and preliminary design configuration studies for three different business-aircraft-sized V/STOLs, using three concepts covering a range of disk loading, are presented as examples. Finally, a discussion of operational aspects of interest to future users of V/STOL business aircraft is presented which centers around the requirements for routine IFR terminal-area operations.

Ecological effects of strip mining in Ohio

The author has identified the following significant results. One result significant as a practical application and for cost benefit analysis is the relative ease with which ERTS-1 will monitor new and unclaimed stripping activities in Southeastern Ohio and in all of Appalachia. Band 5 resolution appears to be better than the often reported 80 meters. The strip mines stand out well enough to be easily identified without other graphic aids. Standing water within the strip mined area stands out in either bands 6 or 7. Areas of several acres are visible. Significant increases in surface extent of water of stripped areas should be detectable on a comparative basis. The degree of reclamation is observable in the imagery in rather gross percentage steps and for areas larger than the bare earth sizes in the table. The gradation in tones in the different bands indicates that probability density imagery using the four bands in CCT data (and statistical processing) is likely to separate degrees of vegetative reclamation.

Solid propulsion powered spacecraft concept.

The feasibility and application of a solid propulsion powered spacecraft concept to implement high-energy missions independent of multiplanetary swingby opportunities are assessed. The characteristics of suitable missions and spacecraft were formulated to determine their effects upon propulsion system selection and design. A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted to provide a meaningful basis of comparing candidate designs. The results substantiated the feasibility of the powered spacecraft concept when used in conjunction with several intermediate-sized launch vehicles as well as energy margins by which to exploit extended mission capabilities. An outgrowth of this study included a new high-mass-fraction solid motor staging design whose performance predictions further enhanced the candidacy of the baseline configuration.

Cost Modeling Techniques for Design Maturity

Cost modeling techniques and factors which either add to or subtract from these estimates are examined. The most important factors for increasing costs are interfacing subsystems, subsystem design and software maturity. Cost decrease depends on hardware, software, and support equipment availability. A cost modeling analysis for reentry shield and aerodynamic decelerator subsystems of a reentry vehicle is presented. Integration problems for the subsystems are also discussed.

A shock spectra and impedance method to determine a bound for spacecraft structural loads

This paper proposes a method for the determination of design loads of a spacecraft mounted on a launch vehicle when the significant frequency ranges of the two structures overlap. The derived loads are realistic upper bounds of the flight loads. The method utilizes shock spectra of the spacecraft/launch vehicle interface directional accelerations for each event separately and introduces a reduction factor for the shock spectra which is based on the relative impedance of the spacecraft and launch vehicle. The main advantages of the method are low cost of analysis and timeliness in the design. These advantages are attained with only a slight expense of structural weight compared to the more exact transient analysis method.

Costs and benefits

Two models of cost benefit analysis are illustrated and the application of these models to assessing the economic scope of space applications programs was discussed. Four major areas cited as improvable through space derived information - food supply and distribution, energy sources, mineral reserves, and communication and navigation were - discussed. Specific illustrations are given for agriculture and maritime traffic.

STARPAHC Interim Evaluation Report, May 1975 - April 1976

The primary goals of the STARPAHC Program are to provide data for developing health care for future manned spacecraft, and to establish the feasibility of the STARPAHC concept for improving the delivery of health care to remote areas on earth. Accordingly, the hardware and medical evaluations initiated during the first 6 months of system operation were continued and expanded during the second 6-month period. The evaluations are based on what has proven to be a relatively stabilized 6-month period wherein system failures which occurred during the initial shakedown period in the first 6 months have been minimized. Early trends and performance data reported in the first semi-annual report were reexamined to either verify, modify or change earlier conclusions. The highlights are given of the total year of operation with emphasis on comparisons between the first and second semi-annual reporting period. In addition, an early analysis of costs is summarized.

Use of Landsat multispectral imagery in estimating snow areal extent and snow water content cost-effectively

Landsat color composites are used in conjunction with a limited amount of aerial survey data and ground-truth measurements in order to estimate snow areal extent and snow water content. The snow water content estimations are based on the inexpensive Landsat data and the much more expensively obtained information on ground snow courses. A cost-effectiveness analysis of the procedures showed the expenses involved in obtaining confidence intervals of 80, 90, 95 and 99% for the estimates.
