Synthetically Reversible, Proton-Mediated Nitrite N–O Bond Cleavage at a Dicopper Site

A monocationic dicopper(I,I) nitrite complex [Cu 2 (μ-κ 1 :κ 1 -O 2 N)DPFN][NTf 2 ] (2) (DPFN = 2,7-bis(fluoro-di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine, NTf 2 – = N(SO 2 CF 3 ) 2 – ), was synthesized by treatment of a dicopper acetonitrile complex, [Cu 2 (μ-MeCN)DPFN][NTf 2 ] 2 (1), with tetrabutylammonium nitrite ([nBu 4 N][NO 2 ]). DFT calculations indicate that 2 is one of three linkage isomers that are close in energy and presumably accessible in solution. Reaction of the μ-κ 1 :κ 1 -O 2 N complex with p-TolSH produces nitrous acid (HONO) and the corresponding dicopper thiolate species via an acid–base exchange reaction. Notably, treatment of 2 with HNTf 2 results in N–O bond cleavage in the putative, HONO-ligated complex to form the more thermodynamically favorable nitrosyl-bridged dicopper complex [Cu 2 (μ-NO)(μ-OH)DPFN][NTf 2 ] 2 (4). This scission can be reversed via deprotonation of the hydroxy ligand with KO t Bu. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the solid-state molecular structures of 2 and 4. DFT calculations were used to construct a reaction coordinate diagram detailing formation of the μ-NO complex and to describe its electronic structure. The nitrosyl ligand in 4 is chemically labile, as demonstrated by its ready displacement in reactions with CO or NO 2 – .

Ultrahigh-pressure disordered eight-coordinated phase of Mg 2 GeO 4 : Analogue for super-Earth mantles

Mg 2 GeO 4 is important as an analog for the ultrahigh-pressure behavior of Mg 2 SiO 4 , a major component of planetary interiors. In this study, we have investigated magnesium germanate to 275 GPa and over 2,000 K using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The experimental results are consistent with the formation of a phase with disordered Mg and Ge, in which germanium adopts eightfold coordination with oxygen: the cubic, Th 3 P 4 -type structure. DFT computations suggest partial Mg-Ge order, resulting in a tetragonal $I\bar{4}2d$ structure indistinguishable from $I\bar{4}3d$ Th 3 P 4 in our experiments. If applicable to silicates, the formation of this highly coordinated and intrinsically disordered phase may have important implications for the interior mineralogy of large, rocky extrasolar planets.

Analysis of Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide Interactions with Metal Cations Through a Chemical Informatics Approach

Nominally weakly coordinating anions are useful for modulating the solubility and chemical properties of metal complexes, but identification and analysis of the systematics of the interactions of anions with cationic metal complexes has not received the attention it deserves. Here, a chemical informatics approach is demonstrated for identifying and quantitatively analyzing the ways that the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion (TFSI) can interact with metal-containing species. An open access computer program (PyCIFTer) was developed to facilitate large-scale structural analysis of TFSI-containing species by utilization of experimental atomic coordinate data from single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies obtained from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). PyCIFTer establishes a three-dimensional vector space from the raw atomic coordinates, generating acyclic, undirected graphs that are used to rapidly analyze the structural properties (bond lengths and angles) of TFSI in individual structures in sequential/batch fashion. The structures are sorted by PyCIFTer into groups based on pre-set and chemically sensible criteria, affording a comprehensive and systematic view of TFSI structural chemistry. This approach avoids tedious one-at-a-time interrogation of structures, a prospect unreasonable in this case, and many others of contemporary chemical relevance; there were over 1500 structures in the CSD containing TFSI as of November 2024. The results demonstrate that TFSI only rarely binds to cations in the solid state, favoring the formation of species in which TFSI is found in cations’ outer coordination spheres. The prospect of applying PyCIFTer to other moieties is also discussed. PyCIFTer is also schematically compared to the commercial CSD Python application programming interface (API). Taken together, this work demonstrates the usefulness of modular workflows for sequential/batch analysis of structural data from XRD, an approach that appears poised to accelerate the translation of legacy structural results into new chemical insights and hypotheses.

The phase space distance between collider events

How can one fully harness the power of physics encoded in relativistic N-body phase space? Topologically, phase space is isomorphic to the product space of a simplex and a hypersphere and can be equipped with explicit coordinates and a Riemannian metric. This natural structure that scaffolds the space on which all collider physics events live opens up new directions for machine learning applications and implementation. Here we present a detailed construction of the phase space manifold and its differential line element, identifying particle ordering prescriptions that ensure that the metric satisfies necessary properties. We apply the phase space metric to several binary classification tasks, including discrimination of high-multiplicity resonance decays or boosted hadronic decays of electroweak bosons from QCD processes, and demonstrate powerful performance on simulated data. Our work demonstrates the many benefits of promoting phase space from merely a background on which calculations take place to being geometrically entwined with a theory’s dynamics.

Group 7 and 8 Catalysts for Electrocatalytic CO 2 Conversion

Group 7 and 8 CO 2 reduction electrocatalysts have seen advances in selective product formation (primarily CO and formate) achieved through structural innovation and fine-tuning of coordination chemistry over the last decade. Furthermore, significant improvements have also been made by involving the secondary ligand coordination sphere in CO 2 reduction. Hydrogen bonding interactions with CO 2 and charged groups in the secondary sphere in particular are shown to lower overpotentials, stabilize intermediates or transition states and improve catalytic rates.

An ab initio molecular dynamics exploration of associates in Ba-Bi liquid with strong ordering trends

Fictive associates are widely used to describe and model liquid phases with strong ordering trends. However, little evidence is known about the assumed associates in most cases. In the present work, an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study is employed to investigate the characters of the Ba-Bi liquid, in which associates have been assumed in existing thermodynamic modeling. It is found that in the Ba rich melt, the Bi atoms are almost completely surrounded by Ba atoms. The Bi-centered coordination polyhedrons are strongly associated to crystalline structures of Ba 5 Bi 3 and Ba 4 Bi 3 with a longer lifetime than other polyhedrons during the AIMD simulations. In addition, these Bi-centered polyhedrons in Ba rich melt connect with each other through vertex, edge, face, and/or bipyramid sharing to form medium range orders (MRO). In the Bi rich melt, the Ba-centered polyhedrons also form MROs, but they are both structurally and compositionally diverse with a shorter lifetime. These findings from AIMD study provide evidences that there exist a strongly ordering Ba 4 Bi 3 associate and a weakly ordering BaBi 3 associate in the Ba-Bi liquid. Here, the predicted enthalpy of mixing in the liquid agrees well with the results by the CALPHAD modeling in the literature.

Materials Fingerprinting Classification

Significant progress in many classes of materials could be made with the availability of experimentally-derived large datasets composed of atomic identities and three-dimensional coordinates. Methods for visualizing the local atomic structure, such as atom probe tomography (APT), which routinely generate datasets comprised of millions of atoms, are an important step in realizing this goal. However, state-of-the-art APT instruments generate noisy and sparse datasets that provide information about elemental type, but obscure atomic structures, thus limiting their subsequent value for materials discovery. The application of a materials fingerprinting process, a machine learning algorithm coupled with topological data analysis, provides an avenue by which here-to-fore unprecedented structural information can be extracted from an APT dataset. As a proof of concept, the material fingerprint is applied to high-entropy alloy APT datasets containing body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures. A local atomic configuration centered on an arbitrary atom is assigned a topological descriptor, with which it can be characterized as a BCC or FCC lattice with near perfect accuracy, despite the inherent noise in the dataset. Finally, this successful identification of a fingerprint is a crucial first step in the development of algorithms which can extract more nuanced information, such as chemical ordering, from existing datasets of complex materials.

Boosting the activity of non-platinum group metal electrocatalyst for the reduction of oxygen via dual-ligated atomically dispersed precursors immobilized on carbon supports

This paper describes the use of both atomically dispersed precursors (ADPs) and conductive carbon dispersion towards the synthesis of iron-based single atom electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). For non-platinum group metal (non-PGM) catalysts, single iron, cobalt or manganese atoms coordinated with nitrogen are the most active structures towards the ORR. Achieving a high density of active sites made of single atoms is still challenging, requiring careful controls of pyrolysis to reduce the sintering of metal active sites. Herewith, we present a new strategy to synthesize iron-based single atom ORR electrocatalysts using a two pronged approach. We first designed a dual-ligated metal organic framework (MOF) precursor. This MOF was then immobilized onto Ketjen black carbon that serves as a conductive dispersion medium for creating the highly dispersed single atom sites. In this work, we demonstrate a near complete dispersion of the iron sites without obvious formation of nanoparticles. The activity of the resulting electrocatalyst exhibited an onset potential of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential of 0.84 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE).

Pronounced Pressure Dependence of Electronic Transitions for Americium Compared to Isomorphous Neodymium and Samarium Mellitates

The mellitate ion is relevant in spent nuclear fuel processing and is utilized as a surrogate for studying the interactions of f elements with humic acids. A wealth of different coordination modes gives the potential for diverse structural chemistry across the actinide series. In this study, an americium mellitate, 243 Am 2 [(C 6 (COO – ) 6 ](H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O (1-Am), has been synthesized and characterized using structural analysis and spectroscopy at ambient and elevated pressures. 1-Am was then compared to isomorphous neodymium (1-Nd) and samarium (1-Sm) mellitates via bond-length analysis and pressure dependence of their Laporte-forbidden f → f transitions. Results show that the pressure dependence of the f → f transitions of 1-Am is significantly greater than that observed in 1-Nd and 1-Sm, with average shifts of 21.4, 4.7, and 3.6 cm –1 /GPa, respectively. Finally, this greater shift found in 1-Am shows further evidence that the 5f orbitals are more affected than the 4f orbitals when pressure is applied to isostructural compounds.

Cis-Divacant Octahedral Fe(II) in a Dimensionally Reduced Family of 2-(Pyridin-2-yl)pyrrolide Complexes

Four-coordinate transition metal complexes can adopt a diverse array of coordination geometries, with square planar and tetrahedral coordination being the most prevalent. Previously, we reported the synthesis of a trinuclear Fe(II) complex, Fe 3 TPM 2 , supported by a three-fold symmetric 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligand (i.e., tris(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane), that featured a rare cis-divacant octahedral (CDO) geometry at each Fe(II) center. Here, a series of truncated 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands is described that support mono- and binuclear Fe(II) complexes that also exhibit CDO geometries. Metallation of tetradentate ligand bis(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane (H 2 BPM) in THF results in a binuclear complex Fe 2 (BPM) 2 (THF) 2 in which both Fe(II) ions are octahedrally coordinated. The coordinated THF solvent ligands are labile: THF dissociation leads to Fe 2 (BPM) 2 , which features five-coordinate Fe(II) ions. The Fe–Fe distance in these binuclear complexes can be elongated by ligand methylation. Metalation of bis(5-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane (H 2 BPM Me ) in THF leads to the formation of four-coordinate, CDO Fe(II) centers in Fe(BPM Me ) 2 . Further ligand truncation affords bidentate ligands 2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (PyrPyrrH) and 2-methyl-6-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (Pyr Me PyrrH). Metalation of these ligands in THF affords six-coordinate complexes Fe(PyrPyrr) 2 (THF) 2 and Fe(Pyr Me Pyrr) 2 (THF) 2 . Dissociation of labile solvent ligands provides access to fourcoordinate Fe(II) complexes. Ligand disproportionation at Fe(PyrPyrr) 2 results in the formation of Fe(PyrPyrr) 3 and Fe(0). Ligand methylation suppresses this disproportionation and enables isolation of Fe(Pyr Me Pyrr) 2 , which is rigorously CDO. Complete ligand truncation, by separating the 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands into the constituent monodentate pyridyl and pyrrolide donors, affords Fe(Pyr) 2 (Pyrr) 2 in which the Fe(II) is tetrahedrally coordinated. Computational analysis indicates that the potential energy surface that dictates the coordination geometry in this family of four-coordinate complexes is fairly flat in the vicinity of CDO coordination. Furthermore, these synthetic studies provide the structural basis to explore the implications of CDO geometry on Fe-catalyzed reactions.

Tailoring the Selective Oxidation of Hydroxyl-Containing Compounds via Precisely Tuning the Hydrogen-Bond Strength of Catalyst H-Bond Acceptors

The unique performance of the enzyme is mainly achieved via weak interactions between the “outer coordination sphere” and the substrate. Inspired by this process, we developed 3D encapsulated-structure catalysts with hydrogen-bond engineering on the shell, which mimics the “outer coordination sphere” of an enzyme. Various hydrogen bond acceptors (C=O, S=O, and N–O groups) are imparted in the shell. Concentration-dependent 1H NMR, inverse-phase gas Chromatography (IGC) measurements, and DFT calculations underscore that the hydrogen bond strength between the acceptor groups and alcohol follows the order of C=O < S=O < N–O. The hydroxyl compound oxidation rate vs the hydrogen bond strength follows a volcano behavior, reminiscent of Sabatier’s principle. The performance variation among catalysts is attributed to the adsorption strength of the substrate. The proposed bioinspired design principle expands the scope of encapsulated catalysts, enabling fine regulation of catalytic activity through precise microenvironment control via weak interactions with substrates.

Revisiting metastable immiscibility in SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 : Structure and phase separation of supercooled liquids and glasses

Understanding and controlling liquid–liquid phase separation in aluminosilicates is crucial for optimizing glass properties. However, the metastable nature of aluminosilicates’ phase separation has made it difficult to study experimentally, and uncertainty persists regarding the compositional and temperature extents of the miscibility gap. Here, we present new experimental evidence that suggests a consolute temperature between 1440 and 1590°C and endmember compositions of 7 and 62 mol.% Al 2 O 3 for the phase-separated glasses. Using containerless melt processing, deeply supercooled liquids over the 0–60 mol.% Al 2 O 3 range are probed with in situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, which simultaneously reveals changes in nanoscale density heterogeneity and atomic structure. Correlations between phase separation and atomic coordination environments are compared for liquids and glasses. Pair distribution function analysis shows mean O–(Si + Al) coordination increases with Al 2 O 3 content and decreases with temperature.

Amorphization in extreme deformation of the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

Ever-harsher service conditions in the future will call for materials with increasing ability to undergo deformation without sustaining damage while retaining high strength. Prime candidates for these conditions are certain high-entropy alloys (HEAs), which have extraordinary work-hardening ability and toughness. By subjecting the equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi HEA to severe plastic deformation through swaging followed by either quasi-static compression or dynamic deformation in shear, we observe a dense structure comprising stacking faults, twins, transformation from the face-centered cubic to the hexagonal close-packed structure, and, of particular note, amorphization. The coordinated propagation of stacking faults and twins along {111} planes generates high-deformation regions, which can reorganize into hexagonal packets; when the defect density in these regions reaches a critical level, they generate islands of amorphous material. These regions can have outstanding mechanical properties, which provide additional strengthening and/or toughening mechanisms to enhance the capability of these alloys to withstand extreme loading conditions.

Foreign civil aviation competition: 1976 summary and implications

A summary assessment is made of foreign civil aviation as it relates to the posture of the United States civil aviation industry. Major findings include: (1) Main competitors - European Economic Community (EEC) and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). (2) Largest commercial market - Transport aircraft. (3) Current market status and projections - U.S. currently dominates the civil aviation market but foreign markets show greater growth trends. (4) Competitive comparisons - Status comparisons are made in technology (aerodynamics, structures and materials, propulsion, avionics, systems, design coordination, and manufacturing); production runs; marketing; and postsales support. The U.S. generally leads except in aerodynamics and propulsion. (5) Multinational ventures - Joint U.S. industry/foreign government development of advanced technology engines is well developed; airframe industry discussions are now underway. (6) Implications - Although the U.S., is currently preeminent in most areas, this may be only a temporary condition. Past U.S. success in aviation has provided many benefits to the nation. These benefits may be lost.
