Self-powered mixer for pressurized containers

Mechanical stirrer, installed entirely within tank, is powered by turbine driven by discharge flow of fluid. Contents of tank are automatically mixed whenever fluid in tank is discharged. Magnetic coupling eliminates need for shaft seal, particularly in high-pressure tanks.

Container seal for dusty environment

Method maintains cleanliness of joint-sealing surfaces under dust-laden conditions. This is accomplished by keeping seal and sealing surface covered with sliding plastic rings, which slide out of the way when a joint is seated.

Direct numerical solution of three-dimensional equations containing elliptic operators.

A direct three-dimensional elliptic solver is presented for application in a wide class of numerical methods for solving partial differential equations in physics and engineering. The derived algorithm and FORTRAN code implement Buzbee, Golub and Nielson's proposed extension of Buneman's Cyclic-Reduction Poisson solver to three dimensions. Both a 'most direct' cyclic reduction and a revised method (to eliminate roundoff error difficulties) are derived. Tests on an IBM 360/67 computer, using various optional combinations of subroutines, showed significant differences in accuracy and computing time, with the optimum subroutine combination depending on mesh size.

The drift field model applied to the lithium-containing silicon solar cell

The drift field model used by Wolf to calculate the short-circuit current was extended to permit calculations of the open-circuit voltage and the maximum power under conditions of illumination of either tungsten (2800 C) source or AMO sunlight. Voltages were calculated using an expression for the drift field diode saturation current derived here. The model, applied to the oxygen rich (C-13 group) lithium solar cells, was used to calculate the pre-and post-electron bombardment trends for lithium gradients in the range of 10 to the 18th power to 10 to the 19th power Li/cm to the 4th power. Published experimental data characterizing these cells were used to tailor the model. The calculated trends are in reasonable agreement with the empirical data of Faith. Diffusion length degradation and carrier removal effects were sufficient to predict the cell performance up to 3 x 10 to the 14th power e/sq cm. Beyond this fluence it was necessary to include drift field removal effects.

Stabilities of nitrogen containing heterocyclic radicals and geometrical influences on non-radiative processes in organic molecules

Theoretical and experimental work on generating radicals by removal of a hydrogen atom from pyrrole, imidazole, indole, and carbazole is reported. Photophysical studies on indolizine and related aza-derivatives show that materials having large S2-S1 energy gaps might exhibit upper state fluorescence. Photodecomposition quantum yields of a series of sterically hindered p-aminobenzene diazonium cations in water were found structurally and wavelength dependent and unquenched in aqueous sodium bromide solutions. Photodecomposition of diazonium materials did not produce a metastable species with a longer lifetime than 1 msec.

Fracture characteristics of structural aerospace alloys containing deep surface flaws

Conditions controlling the growth and fracture of deep surface flaws in aerospace alloys were investigated. Static fracture tests were performed on 7075-T651 and 2219-T87 aluminum, and 6Ai-4V STA titanium . Cyclic flaw growth tests were performed on the two latter alloys, and sustain load tests were performed on the titanium alloy. Both the cyclic and the sustain load tests were performed with and without a prior proof overload cycle to investigate possible growth retardation effects. Variables included in all test series were thickness, flaw depth-to-thickness ratio, and flaw shape. Results were analyzed and compared with previously developed data to determine the limits of applicability of available modified linear elastic fracture solutions.

The effect of broken stringers on the stress intensity factor for a uniformly stiffened sheet containing a crack

A linear elastic stress analysis was made of a centrally cracked sheet stiffened by riveted, uniformly spaced and sized stringers. The stress intensity factor for the sheet and the load concentration factor for the most highly loaded stringer were determined for various numbers of broken stringers. A broken stringer causes the stress intensity factor to be very high when the crack tip is near the broken stringer, but causes little effect when the crack tip extends beyond several intact stringers. A broken stringer also causes an increase in the load concentration factor of the adjacent stringers. The calculated residual strengths and fatigue-crack-growth lives of a stiffened aluminum sheet with a broken stringer were only slightly less than a sheet with all intact stringers, and were still much higher than those of an unstiffened sheet.

Electrical resistivity of some palladium-silver alloys containing hydrogen at 4.2 K

The electrical resistivities of the alloys 90at.%Pd - 10at.%Ag, 80at.%Pd - 20at.%Ag, 70at.%Pd - 30at.%Ag, 60at.%Pd - 40at.%Ag, and 50at.%Pd - 50at.%Ag were measured as functions of absorbed hydrogen x at 4.2 K. These results show a minimum in the resistivity for all the alloys except 90Pd-10Ag; they show a maximum for all the alloys except for 50Pd-Ag. We associate the shapes of the plots with a modification of the Pd D-band because of the substitutional alloying of Ag and the interstitial absorption of hydrogen.

Quasi-static extension of a tensile crack contained in a viscoelastic-plastic solid

Final stretch criterion of failure is applied to the problem of quasi-static extension of a crack embedded in an elastic-plastic or viscoelastic-plastic matrix. The slow growth under subcritical conditions in a rate-sensitive Tresca solid is shown to be a superposition of creep rupture and McClintock's ductile growth. This type of growth occurs at subcritical magnitude of the imposed K-factor and can be accounted for only through a recognition of inelastic properties of solids. In the subcritical range there is no unique value for K sub c independent of geometrical configuration and flaw size. Not only the produced states of stress and strain are dependent on the loading path, but also the material resistance to fracture turns out to be a function of the history of loading that precedes catastrophic failure. A nonlinear integro-differential equation of motion is derived for a crack progressing through a viscoelastic medium with some limited ability to plastic flow. Examples of numerical integration are given incorporating both monotonic and cyclic loading programs.

Mercury - Does its atmosphere contain water

The atmosphere of Mercury, like that of the moon, is maintained in an extremely tenuous minimum state by weak solar wind accretion and radioactive decay processes, and depleted by strong removal mechanisms. Unlike the moon, it has a high daytime surface temperature that promotes the production of water vapor, which may be the dominant atmospheric constituent derived from solar wind protons.
