Los Alamos National Laboratory Reclaimed Water Usage for Data Centers: A Case Study

Water is a valuable resource that is all too often ignored when thinking about sustainability and High-Performance Computing (HPC). Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) found a solution to eliminate the amount of potable water usage needed for cooling HPC facilities. The Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility (SERF) was constructed in 2013 with the main purpose of removing silica from water in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to increase the cycles of concentration for the HPC Complex. SERF enabled Los Alamos National Laboratory to remove silica, reclaim effluent from the wastewater treatment plant and reduce the usage of potable water for HPC cooling.

Use of National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Data to Support Severe Accident Consequence Analysis at Locations Without Onsite Meteorological Data

Certain regulatory actions under 10 CFR Parts 50, 52, or the proposed part 53 require the assessment of the potential off-site consequence risks to public safety and the environment from a hypothetical severe accident. As an important part of these analyses, atmospheric transport and dispersion (ATD) modeling relies heavily on the prevailing weather patterns of a site. When considering future deployment of new reactor designs in areas where historical onsite meteorological data is not available,

Center for Lignocellulose Structure and Formation (CLSF)

Lignocellulose is the carbon- and energy-rich material synthesized by plants when they make secondary cell walls, e.g. in woody tissues. Plants annually convert gigatons of atmospheric CO 2 into these complex and useful biomaterials that comprise over half of all biological carbon on Earth. This biological conversion helps to reduce atmospheric CO 2 that contributes to climate change while generating renewable plant cell walls that are used commercially on a massive scale in the paper, timber and textile industries. Recent technical developments open new possibilities for use of modified wood and cellulose fibers as large-scale alternatives to steel, plastics, and other nonrenewable materials with high carbon footprints and energy inputs, as well as for generation of biofuels and bio-hydrogen. Despite the utility of plant-based biomaterials, many physical and biological aspects of cell wall structure and formation remain obscure, and this limits the current scope for engineering these renewable resources for greater utility.

Investigation of novel twinning in additive body centered cubic titanium (Fiscal Year 2024 Final Report)

This report summarizes the result of a one year seedling project to investigate unusual twinning behavior in shock loaded additive Ti5552. The twinning behavior only occurs when the β phase of Ti5553 is metastable, and it appears to be a type of double twin involving two different twin variants, first a {332}⟨113⟩ twin forms before being consumed by a specific {112}⟨111⟩ twin variant to create a 20 o . This behavior has only been detected during shock loading around incipient spall damage. The twinning is investigated by performing postmortem EBSD and PED analysis of gas-gun loaded specimens and preliminary molecular dynamics simulations.

Earth-Centered, Earth-Fixed Inertial Navigation System & Error-State Kalman Filter Reference Manual

This is a self-contained reference document that derives the equations necessary to build a combined inertial navigation system and error-state Kalman filter. Coordinate transform, linear time invariant system, inertial sensing, and error-state Kalman filtering theory is built up from first principles. This theory is then leveraged to derive the system equations for two combined inertial navigation system and error-state Kalman filters: (1) a 15-state system modeling white-noise-integrating accelerometer and gyroscope biases, and (2) a 39-state system modeling static and first-order Gauss-Markov accelerometer and gyroscope biases, scale factor errors, and cross-axis sensitivity errors.

Data Center Immersion Cooling: A Case Study and Summary of High-Performance Computing Cooling Technologies

The future of High Performance Computing (HPC) is carved out for all high-performance facilities. As computer processing increases exponentially, especially with the demand for AI training, more speed will equate to more computing density and ultimately more power draw and resource demand. Sandia National Laboratories has not seen or known of anything that would lead us to think this might change in the next 5 to 10 years.

Energy Research Frontier Center: Photonics at Thermodynamic Limits

The Photonics at Thermodynamic Limits (PTL) EFRC strives to achieve photonic operations at thermodynamic limits by controlling the flow of photons, electrons, and phonons in atomically architected materials, enabling entirely new energy conversion systems. To achieve this mission, the EFRC united leading researchers in layered and nanostructured materials synthesis, electromagnetic theory, first‐principles quantum theory of materials, and advanced characterization of excited state phenomena. The two-year extension of the EFRC has finished several key efforts started in the EFRC in the previous funding period.

Reinventing wastewater treatment plants: energy neutral treatment and enhanced fertilizer production through a novel resource recovery center

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are typically energy intensive, mainly due to the secondary treatment processes such as activated sludge (AS) for treatment of organics as well as nutrients like nitrogen. Nitrogen removal presents a big problem for WWTPs. The main form of nitrogen in wastewater is ammonium, and an AS process uses oxygen to convert ammonium into nitrite and nitrate which is then converted to nitrogen through denitrification process. During anaerobic digestion (AD), organic nitrogen gets degraded, resulting in an effluent stream (centrate) with a high nitrogen content, mostly in the form of ammonium. This contributes 15-30% of total nitrogen to the wastewater influent which further increases energy consumption for aeration. The project aims to transform this conventional municipal WWTPs into energy-neutral, resource-recovering facilities by integrating three core technologies: • Cloth Media Filtration (CMF) to replace conventional primary sedimentation (CPS) and increase the diversion of organics from the energy intensive secondary treatment to AD. This results in reduced energy demand for aeration in the secondary process while simultaneously increasing the biogas production in the anaerobic digesters. • Anerobic Digester to increase biogas and ammonia production. • Membrane Evaporation (ME) to recover ammonia from AD centrate and produce marketable fertilizer. The benefits of proposed WWTP process modifications were evaluated using techno economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). For CMF portion of the research a statistical analysis was employed to develop data-driven tools that could be used to enhance and optimize its performance in terms of energy savings and effluent quality. The main objective of this project is to reduce the energy demand for secondary treatment at municipal WWTPs by at least 50%, increase anaerobic digester (AD) biogas and ammonia production by 100% and 120%, respectively, and recover 90% of ammonia from the AD. Integrated CMF, AD, and ME was shown to work synergistically toward achieving these decarbonization targets through energy-positive treatment and fertilizer recovery techniques.

Center for Alternative Synchronization and Timing (CAST) Technical Bulletin #007: Holdover Experiment #1

Stable and accurate timing forms the foundation of many modern essential services. While Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provide a cheap way to achieve extremely accurate timing, these systems are vulnerable to interference and complete outages, forcing systems that rely on them into a state of holdover. Testing and characterizing holdover performance is therefore essential for ensuring that these modern services do not go down when GNSS-based timing is unavailable.
