Machine-Learning Functional Zonation Approach for Characterizing Terrestrial–Aquatic Interfaces: Application to Lake Erie

Ecosystems at coastal terrestrial–aquatic interfaces play a significant role in global biogeochemical cycles. In this study, we aimed to characterize coastal wetlands with particular focus on the co-variability between plant dynamics, topography, soil, and other environmental factors. We proposed a functional zonation approach based on machine learning clustering to identify the spatial regions, i.e., zones that capture these co-varied properties. This approach was applied to publicly available datasets along Lake Erie, in the Great Lakes Region. We investigated the heterogeneity of coastal ecosystem structures as a function of along-shore distance and transverse distance, based on the spatial data layers, including topography, wetland vegetation cover, and the time series of Landsat’s enhanced vegetation index (EVI) between 1990 and 2020. Results showed that the topographic metrics (elevation and slope), soil texture, and plant productivity influence the spatial distribution of wetland land-covers (emergent and phragmites). These results highlight a natural organization along the transverse axis, where the elevation and the EVI increase further away from the coastline. In addition, the clustering analysis allowed us to identify regions with distinct environmental characteristics, as well as the ones that are more sensitive to interannual lake-level variations.

The Straightening of a River Meander Leads to Extensive Losses in Flow Complexity and Ecosystem Services

To assist river restoration efforts we need to slow the rate of river degradation. This study provides a detailed explanation of the hydraulic complexity loss when a meandering river is straightened in order to motivate the protection of river channel curvature. We used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to document the difference in flow dynamics in nine simulations with channel curvature (C) degrading from a well-established tight meander bend (C = 0.77) to a straight channel without curvature (C = 0). To control for covariates and slow the rate of loss to hydraulic complexity, each of the nine-channel realizations had equivalent bedform topography. The analyzed hydraulic variables included the flow surface elevation, streamwise and transverse unit discharge, flow velocity at streamwise, transverse, and vertical directions, bed shear stress, stream function, and the vertical hyporheic flux rates at the channel bed. The loss of hydraulic complexity occurred gradually when initially straightening the channel from C = 0.77 to C = 0.33 (i.e., the radius of the channel is three-times the channel width), and additional straightening incurred rapid losses to hydraulic complexity. Other studies have shown hydraulic complexity provides important riverine habitat and is positively correlated with biodiversity. This study demonstrates how hydraulic complexity can be gradually and then rapidly lost when unwinding a river, and hopefully will serve as a cautionary tale.

Probing the Coherence of Metal Absorbers toward Background Quasar Pairs

Abstract We investigate the spatial coherence of metal absorption lines in the circumgalactic medium using 4115 quasar pairs from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR16. We identify 184 Mg ii (15 with dual detections) and 50 C iv (11 with dual detections) absorber pairs. The fraction of pairs with fractional equivalent width difference δW r ≤ 0.5 declines with projected separation: for Mg ii , it drops from ∼52% at 0–25 kpc to ∼7% at 100–200 kpc, while for C iv , it decreases from ∼100% to ∼21% over 0–200 kpc. In every separation bin, C iv absorbers with δW r ≤ 0.5 maintain a higher fraction than Mg ii absorbers. Similar results are obtained when the nondetections are treated as 2 σ W r upper limits in a survival analysis. The transverse autocorrelation function shows strong Mg ii clustering within 0–25 kpc, whereas the C iv excess remains relatively flat out to ∼100 kpc. These findings suggest that high-ionization C iv gas retains coherence over larger transverse scales than low-ionization Mg ii gas, in agreement with previous lensed quasar and high-resolution studies.

DESI DR2 Results I: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from the Lyman Alpha Forest

We present the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements with the Lyman-alpha (LyA) forest from the second data release (DR2) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Our BAO measurements include both the auto-correlation of the LyA forest absorption observed in the spectra of high-redshift quasars and the cross-correlation of the absorption with the quasar positions. The total sample size is approximately a factor of two larger than the DR1 dataset, with forest measurements in over 820,000 quasar spectra and the positions of over 1.2 million quasars. We describe several significant improvements to our analysis in this paper, and two supporting papers describe improvements to the synthetic datasets that we use for validation and how we identify damped LyA absorbers. Our main result is that we have measured the BAO scale with a statistical precision of 1.1% along and 1.3% transverse to the line of sight, for a combined precision of 0.65% on the isotropic BAO scale at $z_{eff} = 2.33$. This excellent precision, combined with recent theoretical studies of the BAO shift due to nonlinear growth, motivated us to include a systematic error term in LyA BAO analysis for the first time. We measure the ratios $D_H(z_{eff})/r_d = 8.632 \pm 0.098 \pm 0.026$ and $D_M(z_{eff})/r_d = 38.99 \pm 0.52 \pm 0.12$, where $D_H = c/H(z)$ is the Hubble distance, $D_M$ is the transverse comoving distance, $r_d$ is the sound horizon at the drag epoch, and we quote both the statistical and the theoretical systematic uncertainty. The companion paper presents the BAO measurements at lower redshifts from the same dataset and the cosmological interpretation.

SIDIS Unpolarized Cross Sections from a 3 He Target with the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device at JLab

In this paper we present a detailed impact study of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering unpolarized cross sections' measurements using the proposed SoLID apparatus at Jefferson Lab. This type of data, collected at large Bjorken x bj , moderate values of Q 2 and small values of the transverse momentum of produced hadrons, P hT , allows to study transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions in a still poorly explored region. We present the projected results for charged light mesons based on simulated data. For the azimuthal-angle integrated cross sections we adopt the TMD framework up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, while a simpler TMD parton model is employed for the study of azimuthal angular dependencies.

Positive and Negative Ion CIMS Measurements, SGP, May-June 2024

The negative ion measurements were taken using two LTOF-CIMS with two different nitrate inlets. The data labeled Aerodyne_Inlet used an Aerodyne nitrate inlet. Data labeled PCC used a custom transverse inlet. The positive ion measurements were taken using one LTOF-CIMS with hydronium as an ionization reagent using a custom transverse inlet with an inlet voltage difference of 700 V. See https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpca.2c01672 for more information. Peaks were autofit using tofware. Positive ion data is published in the form of peak signal/reagent signal. Data files of peak signal/reagent signal for the two mass spectrometers for the negative ion measurements are separate. Concentrations of H2SO4 are combined into one file. When measurements were overlapping, measurements from the Aerodyne nitrate inlet were used.

Measurement of Medium-induced Modification of Jet Yield and Acoplanarity Using Semi-inclusive \(\gamma _{\mathrm {dir}}+\)jet and \(\pi ^{0}+\)jet Distributions in \(p+p\) and Central Au\(+\)Au Collisions at \(\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 200\) GeV by STAR

The STAR Collaboration presents measurements of semi-inclusive distributions of charged jets recoiling from high transverse energy ($E_T$) direct photon and $π^0$ triggers in $p+p$ and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$=200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with jet resolution parameters R=0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated background in central Au+Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event technique. This enables a jet measurement extending to low transverse momentum and large R with well-controlled systematic uncertainties. We present measurements of the jet R dependence of suppression, intra-jet broadening, and acoplanarity of $π^0$+jet and $γ_{dir}$+jet for trigger $E_T (E_{T}^{trig})$ between 9–20 GeV.

Coexistence of Soft Modes and Dynamic Ti Disorder in Cubic BaTiO 3 Studied by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The phonon dispersion relations in cubic BaTiO 3 have been measured along the [100], [110], and [111] directions at T = 453 K using inelastic neutron scattering. The isotropic transverse acoustic (TA) branches indicate that the interatomic force constant between Ba and O atoms in BaTiO 3 is large compared with that between Pb and O atoms in PbTiO 3 . The transverse optical (TO) branches along the [100] and [111] directions soften toward the Brillouin zone center. The TO branch along the [110] direction with [001] polarization is relatively low and flat, indicating the weak interatomic force constant between Ti and O atoms along the Ti–O chain. The intensity of inelastic diffuse scattering along the [100] and [110] directions increases with decreasing temperature down to 453 K. In conclusion, the present results suggest that the soft modes coexist with the dynamic Ti disorder in the Ti–O chain near the phase transition in the cubic phase.

Broad band tunable energy electron beam pulser

An electromagnetic mechanical pulser implements a transverse wave metallic comb stripline TWMCS kicker having inwardly opposing teeth structured to retard a phase velocity of an RF traveling wave propagated therethrough to match the kinetic velocity of a continuous electron beam simultaneously propagated therethrough. The kicker imposes transverse oscillations onto the beam, which is subsequently chopped into pulses by an aperture. The RF phase velocity is substantially independent of RF frequency and amplitude, thereby enabling independent tuning of the electron pulse widths and repetition rate. The exterior surface of the kicker is conductive, thereby avoiding electron charging. In embodiments, various elements of the kicker and/or aperture can be mechanically varied to provide further tuning of the pulsed electron beam. A divergence suppression section can include a mirror TWMCS and/or magnetic quadrupoles. RF can be applied to a down-selecting TWMCS downstream of the aperture to reduce the pulse repetition rate.

ON LANDAU DAMPING RESTORATION WITH ELECTRON LENSES IN SPACE-CHARGE DOMINATED BEAMS

It is shown that the Lorentz forces of a low-energy, magnetically stabilized electron beam, or “electron lens”, can introduce transverse nonlinear focusing sufficient for Landau damping of transverse beam instabilities in accelerators. Unlike other nonlinear elements, the electron lens can provide the frequency spread mainly at the desirable range of particle amplitudes, thus permitting to avoid the beam lifetime degradation.

Solar power system using hybrid trough and photovoltaic two-stage light concentration

A solar power method is provided using two-stage light concentration to drive concentrating photovoltaic conversion in conjunction with thermal collection. The method concentrates light rays received in a plurality of transverse planes towards a primary linear focus in an axial plane, which is orthogonal to the transverse planes. T band wavelengths of light are transmitted to the primary linear focus. R band wavelengths of light are reflected towards a secondary linear focus in the axial plane, which is parallel to the primary linear focus. The light received at the primary linear focus is translated into thermal energy. The light received at the secondary linear focus is focused by optical elements along a plurality of tertiary linear foci, which are orthogonal to the axial plane. The focused light in each tertiary primary focus is focused into a plurality of receiving areas, and translated into electrical energy.

Relaxation time estimation in surface NMR

Technologies including NMR relaxation time estimation methods and corresponding apparatus are disclosed. Example techniques may include performing at least one single-pulse acquisition sequence, the single-pulse acquisition sequence comprising transmitting a single modulated pulse with a surface coil, wherein the phase, frequency, or amplitude of the single modulated pulse is varied during the single modulated pulse, and wherein the single modulated pulse excites a transverse magnetization component within a subsurface fluid. The resulting NMR signal may be recorded on at least one receiving device, including recording the NMR signal associated with the transverse magnetization component excited by the single modulated pulse. Processing techniques may be applied in which recorded NMR response data are used to estimate NMR properties and the relaxation times T1 and T2* as a function of position as well as one-dimensional and two-dimension distributions of T1 versus T2* as a function of subsurface position.

Exploring QCD Factorization at Moderate Energy Scales

Asymptotic freedom in QCD facilitates the use of partonic degrees of freedom over short distances, but physical processes are sensitive to a wide range of scales. Thus, it is necessary in QCD calculations to utilize a factorization scheme to separate a process into perturbative and non-perturbative factors. This separation relies on an assumption that one energy scale is infinitely larger than the other scales involved in the process. However, much experimental research in areas such as nucleon structure and quark-hadron duality occur at more moderate energy scales where that basic assumption may not be true but perturbative calculations should still be useful. Thus, an exploration of the limits of factorization at more moderate energy scales is needed. This dissertation examines various aspects of factorization at these energy scales first by applying the necessary approximations to a simple model where exact calculations are possible and so the effects of these approximations can be quantified. This is followed by examining areas where corrections are known to be needed. First is an exploration of target mass corrections (TMCs) in the case of deep inelastic scattering (DIS), including a discussion of what large corrections imply about the target structure. Second, is a general examination of PDFs and FFs at moderate scales. Third, I will discuss how this fits into the long-term effort to study the transition between small transverse momentum (generated non-perturbatively) and large transverse momentum (generated in the hard process)

Fiber Orientation Evaluation in Reinforced Composites using Digital Image Correlation

This paper presents an innovative nondestructive evaluation (NDE) approach to evaluate fiber orientation in fiber reinforced composites utilizing digital image correlation (DIC). Fiber orientation is a crucial factor that influences the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite. Conventional methods for fiber orientation evaluation and measurement are either destructive, which are typically laborious. NDE methods such as micro computed tomography are expensive and limited in sample size. In this work, we evaluate two methods of excitation of the composite, namely-quasistatic mechanical loading and thermal cycling. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been employed in conjunction for fiber orientation measurements. The DIC system is able to measure the fiber orientation by capturing 19x higher strain in the transverse direction of the reinforced fiber axis during excitation. The larger strain occurs in the transverse direction due to larger elongation in the surrounding polymer matrix than the fiber which resists elongation. This innovative method is within the preliminary stage and has been developed to fill the gap/limitations of other NDE methods.

Tamper-resistant fastener

A tamper-resistant threaded fastener including a circular head having a slot formed in the head transverse to the longitudinal axis, the slot having an enlarged region intermediate an apex and a base of the slot. A cap member includes a head having a drive feature formed therein, the head extending to a first shank portion, extending to an enlarged second shank portion, extending to a foot. The cap member is insertable in the slot only from a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis. During rotational installation of the fastener and cap member in a threaded counterbored opening for securing a barrier for protecting an asset, the foot shears inside the slot at a predetermined rotational drive force, the cap member being rotatable in the opening and protectively covering the fastener head.

Ceramic matrix composite turbine nozzle shell and method of assembly

A ceramic matrix composite turbine nozzle includes a primary outer nozzle platform; a primary inner nozzle platform; and an airfoil-shaped body extending between the primary inner and primary outer nozzle platforms. The body includes core plies defining a cavity; composite wrap plies circumscribing the core plies and defining an airfoil shape; a secondary outer nozzle platform in contact with the primary outer nozzle platform; and a secondary inner nozzle platform in contact with the primary inner nozzle platform. Each composite wrap ply has two layers of unidirectional fibers oriented transverse to each other and has first and second longitudinal edges. The first and second longitudinal edges are cut into fingers, which are folded in a transverse direction away from a turbine nozzle longitudinal axis and are interleaved between platform plies to define the secondary inner nozzle platform and the secondary outer nozzle platform.

Measurement of the cross section of top quark pairs produced in association with a Photon in Lepton +Jets events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with full Run II CMS data

The inclusive production cross section of top quark pairs in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC with 13 TeV energy using the full RunII data collected by CMS in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with a total corresponding integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The relative fraction of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ events normalized to inclusive t$ \bar{t}$ production is measured. The cross section measurement provides important information about the electromagnetic coupling of the standard model top quark and is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is carried out in the in semileptonic decay channel with a well isolated high P$ \_{T}$ lepton (electron and muon), at least four jets out of which at least one must be b-tagged, and an isolated photon. Photons may be emitted from initial state radiation, top quarks, and decay products of top quarks. The fiducial phase space with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV and j\x11$ \eta$ <1.4441 is used. A simultaneous likelihood fit of control regions with the signal region is done to constraint the backgrounds and to extract the t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ cross section. The measurement of the ratio of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ to t$ \bar{t}$ is $0.02055 \pm 0.00099$ (syst.) $ \pm 0.00099$ (stat.) in $e$ channel , 0.02156 $ \pm$ 0.00068 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00068 (stat.) in $ \mu$ channel , and 0.02203 $ \pm$ 0.00064 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00064 (stat.) in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively. The measured inclusive cross section is 3.81 $ \pm$ 0.15 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.10 (stat.) pb in e channel , 3.87 $ \pm$ 0:11 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0:07 (stat.) pb in $ \mu$ channel , and 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively for full RunII data. The total inclusive cross section with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV is found to be 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb with full RunII CMS data. The results are in agreement with the standard model next to leading order prediction.

First Measurement of $\Lambda$ Electroproduction off Nuclei in the Current and Target Fragmentation Regions

We report results of $\Lambda$ hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets obtained with the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014 GeV electron beam. These results represent the first measurements of the $\Lambda$ multiplicity ratio and transverse momentum broadening as a function of the energy fraction ($z$) in the current and target fragmentation regions. The multiplicity ratio exhibits a strong suppression at high $z$ and an enhancement at low $z$. The measured transverse momentum broadening is an order of magnitude greater than that seen for light mesons. This indicates that the propagating entity interacts very strongly with the nuclear medium, which suggests that propagation of di-quark configurations in the nuclear medium takes place at least part of the time, even at high $z$. The trends of these results are qualitatively described by the GiBUU transport model, particularly for the multiplicity ratios. These observations will potentially open a new era of studies of the structure of the nucleon as well as of strange baryons.
