Superconductivity above 90 K in the square-planar compound system ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu

Superconductivity has been found in the 90-K range in ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu in addition to Y. The results suggest that the unique square-planar Cu atoms, each surrounded by four or six oxygen atoms, are crucial to the superconductivity of oxides in general. In particular, the high Tc of ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) is attributed mainly to the quasi-two-dimensional assembly of the CuO2-Ba-CuO(2 + x)Ba-CuO2 layers sandwiched between two A layers, with particular emphasis in the CuO(2 + x) layers. Higher-Tc oxides are predicted for compounds with bigger assemblies of CuO2 layers coupled by Ba layers.

On the absence of young white dwarf companions to five technetium stars

A search for hot companions to five stars of type MS and S has been carried out using the IUE satellite. No hot companions were detected for the MS stars HR 85, 4647, 6702, and 8062, and the S star HR 8714. Limits on the luminosities of possible white dwarf companions provide lower limits of 2-5x10 to the 8th yr to the ages of any degenerate companions. All five stars exhibit strong Tc I lines, and the presence of technetium, with a half-life of 2.1x10 to the 5th yr, signifies recent nucleosynthesis. The limits on the ages of possible white dwarf companions that are equal to or greater than 1000 half-lives of Tc exclude the possibility that the s-process elemental enhancement seen in these MS and S stars resulted from mass transfer from a more highly evolved companion (as is probably the mechanism by which barium stars are created). These MS and S stars represent a sample of true thermally pulsing asymptotic giant-branch stars.

Making A Superconductive Thin Film

Experimental fabrication process results in superconductive thin film of YBa2Cu3O7 ("123" phase of Y/Ba/Cu/O) on substrate of green semiconducting Y2BaCuO5 (the "211" phase). Film becomes superconductive below transition temperature (Tc) of 93 K. Superconducting material to be deposited on substrate. Material then annealed in oxygen at 950 degree C for 6 h, followed by slow cooling in furnace. At this point, material had a Tc of 96 K. Transition to superconductivity at 93 K very sharp. Estimated critical current density 350 A/cm2.

Structural chemistry of Au(III)-substituted Ba2YCu3O(7-delta)

A series of gold-substituted perovskite superconductors Ba2Y(Cu/1-x/Aux)3O(7-delta)(x = 0-0.1) was synthesized. For x = 0.1, there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A), but a 0.06 A c-axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. Substituted gold was found to be trivalent by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Replacing Cu(1) in the copper oxide chain with a slight reordering of oxygen is consistent with c-axis expansion. The formal charge of the site remains trivalent, while remaining Cu in the chains is reduced to Cu(I), resulting in an oxygen stoichiometry of less than 7. Finally, no large effect on Tc is observed (Tc = 89 K for x = 0.10), in contrast to the effect of a number of other metal ion dopants. These results are discussed relative to the chemistry of Au(III) and to the use of the metal in structures containing gold and ceramic superconductors.

High-temperature processing of oxide superconductors and superconducting oxide-silver oxide composite

High temperature processing was found to partially convert the green 211 phase oxide to 123 phase. High Tc superconductivity was observed in Bi-Sr-Cu-O and Y-Sr-Cu-O systems prepared using the same heat treatment process. High temperature processing presents an alternative synthetic route in the search for new high Tc superconductors. An unusual magnetic suspension with enhancement in critical current density was observed in the 123 and AgO composite.

Analysis of Microstrip Lines with Alternative Implementation of Conductors and Superconductors

An analysis of microstrip line structures in which either the strip or the ground plane or both are made of a high Tc superconductor is presented. The effect of implementation of a superconductor to the strip and the ground plane is explained with the calculation of a conductor loss of the structure by the Phenomenological Loss Equivalence Method (PEM). The theoretical values are compared with the experimental results from a ring resonator which is made of a gold ground plane and a high Tc superconductor, YBa2Cu3O(7-x), strip.

Glass-derived superconducting ceramics with zero resistance at 107 K in the Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) system

A melt of composition Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) was fast quenched to form a glass. This was subsequently air annealed and the influence of annealing time and temperature on the formation of various crystalline phases was investigated. X-ray powder diffraction indicate that none of the resulting samples were single phase. However, for an annealing temperature of 840 C, the volume fraction of the high Tc phase (isostructural with Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10) increased with annealing time. A specimen annealed at this temperature for 243 h followed by slow cooling showed a sharp transition and Tc (R = 0) = 107.2 K.

The effect of electron irradiation on YBa2Cu3O(x) with gold bead contacts

The effect of 1-MeV electron irradiation, up to a total dose of 5.7 x 10 to the 17th electrons/sq cm at room temperature on YBa2Cu3O(x) was investigated using gold bead contacts made by the melting technique. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, the critical current density Jc at 77 K, the normal-state resistivity, and the contact resistance for gold bead contacts were measured as a function of fluence on the same samples without disturbing the contacts. Tc remained constant at 91 K, and Jc at 77 K remained constant around 90 A/sq cm. The normal-state resistivity increased systematically by about 15 percent for the total dose. Finally, the surface contact resistance at 77 K remained less than 4.2 microohm sq cm throughout the radiations. These studies took place over an 8-month period, and subsequent measurements indicate that the results are definitely due to radiation effects and not aging effects. It is concluded that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O(x) with gold bead contacts would perform well in a space environment of electron irradiation.

Superconducting Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) ceramics by rapid melt quenching and glass crystallization

The preparation of superconducting Bi(1.5)Pb(0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) in the glassy state is described, and the results of a study of its crystallization kinetics are presented. The annealing parameters for transforming the glass into a superconductor containing a large fraction of the high-Tc phase were determined. It was found that prolonged annealing (longer than 10 days) in air at 840 C, followed by slow cooling, results in the Tc of 107.2 K and a sharp transition of 2 K.

Comment on 'A re-examination of impulsive VLF signals in the night ionosphere of Venus'

Taylor and Cloutier (TC, 1988) previously argued that Singh and Russell (SR, 1986) wrongly identified telemetry interference as VLF broadband signals originating in Venus 'lightning events'. A response was made by Russell and Singh (RS, 1989). This comment criticizes RS, arguing that the SR did not distinguish between signal and noise and that RS makes false claims about the SR analysis. In a reply to TC, Russell argues that the SR paper, while flawed, was not intended to be quantitative and succeeds in bringing attention to the morphology of the signals seen in the upper three channels of the Pioneer Venus electric field detector.

Development of high T(sub c) (greater than 110 K) Bi, Tl, and Y-based materials as superconducting circuit elements

Experimental work has continued on the development and characterization of bulk and hot pressed powders and tapecast materials in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O systems. A process for producing warp-free, sintered, superconducting tapes of Bi composition Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(x) with a mixed oxide process was established. This procedure required a triple calcination at 830 C for 24 hours and sintering at 845 C from 20 to 200 hours. Hot pressing the triple calcined powder at 845 C for 6 hours at 5000 psi yielded a dense material which on further heat treatment at 845 C for 24 hours exhibited a Tc of 108.2 K. A further improvement in the processing of the bismuth materials was achieved via a chemical coprecipitation process wherein the starting nitrate materials were coprecipitated with oxalic acid, thus yielding a more chemically homogeneous, more reactive powder. With the coprecipitated powders, only one calcine at 830 C for 12 hours and a final sinter at 845 C for 30 hours was sufficient to produce a bulk superconducting material with a Tc of 108.4 K. SAFIRE-type grounding links were successfully fabricated from sintered, tapecast, coprecipitated BSCCO 2223 powders. Compositional and processing investigations were continued on the Tl-based superconductors. Manganese and lithium additions and sintering temperature and time were examined to determine their influence on superconducting properties. It was found that lithium substitutions for copper enhance the transition temperatures while manganese additions produced deleterious effects on the superconducting properties. A suitable procedure for producing reproducible bulk and tapecast material of Tl composition Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) was developed and used in fabricating uniform superconducting tapes. The highest transition temperature for Tl-based tapes was measured at 110.2 K. Thallium superconducting SAFIRE-type grounding links were fabricated from the tapes.

High-temperature-superconducting magnetic susceptibility bolometer

An infrared detector called the magnetic susceptibility bolometer is introduced which is based on the tmperature dependence of the diamagnetic screening of a high-Tc superconductor film near Tc. Results are reported for the response of a prototype model to modulated blackbody radiation. Possible improvements are discussed as is the potential sensitivity of an improved device.

Properties of large area ErBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films deposited by ionized cluster beams

Ionized cluster beam (ICB) deposition is employed to produce ErBa2Cu3O(7-x) films on different substrates without post-annealing. Films with diameters of up to 70 mm are grown on SrTiO3 100 plane and exhibit Tc values of 84-87 K, Jc of about 10 exp 6 A/sq m at 77 K. These films are epitaxial with the c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the substrate surface, and they can be routinely produced by ICB with good Jc and Tc.

Solar wind thermal electrons in the ecliptic plane between 1 and 4 AU - Preliminary results from the Ulysses radio receiver

The radio receiver of the Unified Radio and Plasma experiment aboard the Ulysses spacecraft records spectra of the quasi-thermal plasma noise. The interpretation of these spectra allows the determination of the total electron density Ne and of the cold (core) electron temperature Tc in the solar wind. A single power law does not fit the variations of Ne which result from the contribution from different solar wind structures. The distribution of the values of Tc suggests that, on the average, the solar wind is nearly isothermal.

Combustion synthesis of ceramic and metal-matrix composites

Combustion synthesis or self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is effected by heating a reactant mixture, to above the ignition temperature (Tig) whereupon an exothermic reaction is initiated which produces a maximum or combustion temperature, Tc. These SHS reactions are being used to produce ceramics, intermetallics, and composite materials. One of the major limitations of this process is that relatively high levels of porosity, e.g., 50 percent, remain in the product. Conducting these SHS reactions under adiabatic conditions, the maximum temperature is the adiabatic temperature, Tad, and delta H (Tad) = 0, Tad = Tc. If the reactants or products go through a phase change, the latent heat of transformation needs to be taken into account.

Companions to bright S and MS stars - Technetium deficiency and binarity

To test the popular hypothesis that technetium-deficient stars of spectral types S and MS are mass-transfer binaries, we have searched for ultraviolet light from the putative hot secondaries in spectra taken with the SWP spectrograph of IUE. Although most S and MS stars are apparently thermally pulsing AGB (asymptotic giant branch) stars whose surfaces have been enriched with s-process elements and carbon dredged up from the interior, those stars whose spectra show enhanced s-process elements but no Tc are widely believed to be cooler analogs of the Ba II stars, which apparently owe their unusual abundances to prior mass transfer, the Tc from which has decayed away. We report IUE observations of 15 S and MS stars with the SWP, including the identification of six hot companions. Assembling all the IUE observations made to date, we find clear support for the mass-transfer hypothesis, confirming evidence from other lines of research. We further discuss the ages of the companions and the implications of these discoveries for stellar evolution.

Specific heats and thermodynamic critical fields in Zn-doped YBa2Cu3O(7-x) according to an induced-pairing model

Electronic specific heats and thermodynamic critical fields are calculated in a mean-field version of an induced-pairing model for superconductivity, and compared with results of Loram et al. (1990) on YBa2(Cu(1-y)Zn(y))3O(7-x). This model involves induction of pairing of holes in a wideband by strongly bound electronlike pairs. It is assumed that the planar hole concentration for no Zn addition is close to, but slightly higher than, that for the maximum Tc, and that it increases by 0.015 per planar Cu ion for each increase of y by 0.01. Parameters of the model are taken to be the same as in a previous publication in which energy gaps were discussed, except that an effective hybridization parameter is adjusted for each Zn concentration to give agreement with the observed Tc. Results are presented for y = 0.0, 0.01, and 0.03. The agreement with experiment is good for thermodynamic critical fields, and is fair for specific heats. For specimens with larger y, with relatively low T(c)s, it is argued that the model should be supplemented to include effects of a BCS-type interaction amongst the wideband carriers.
