System and method for forming material substrate printer

A method is disclosed for manufacturing a part via an additive manufacturing process. A solution is used which has a volatile component within which is suspended particles of a powdered material. The solution is heated until it at least one of begins boiling or is about to begin boiling. The heated solution is then deposited at least at one location on a substrate to help form a layer of the part. The volatile component then evaporates, leaving only the particles of powdered material. The particles are then heated to the melting point. The deposition and heating operations are repeated to successively form a plurality of layers for the part. The evaporation of the volatile component helps to cool the part.

High quality superconducting Nb co-planar resonators on sapphire substrate

We present measurements and simulations of superconducting Nb co-planar waveguide resonators on sapphire substrate down to millikelvin temperature range with different readout powers. In the high temperature regime, we demonstrate that the Nb film residual surface resistance is comparable to that observed in the ultra-high quality, bulk Nb 3D superconducting radio frequency cavities while the resonator quality is dominated by the BCS thermally excited quasiparticles. At low temperature both the resonator quality factor and frequency can be well explained using the two-level system models. Through the energy participation ratio simulations, we find that the two-level system loss tangent is $\sim 10^{-2}$, which agrees quite well with similar studies performed on the Nb 3D cavities.

Microbiomes and methods for producing medium-chain fatty acids from organic substrates

Microbiome compositions and uses thereof. The microbiome compositions include a set of microbes. The sets of microbes contain members of Lactobacillaceae, Eubacteriaceae, Lachnospiraceae, and Coriobacteriaceae. The number of individual physical microbes in the set constitutes a certain percentage of the total number of individual physical microbes in the microbiome composition. The microbiome compositions can be used for producing medium-chain fatty acids from organic substrates through anaerobic fermentation in a medium. The medium can include lignocellulosic stillage.

Simple coplanar waveguide resonator mask targeting metal-substrate interface

This white paper presents a single-layer mask, found at https://github.com/Boulder-Cryogenic-Quantum-Testbed/simple-resonator-mask. It is designed for fabrication of superconducting microwave resonators towards 1:1 comparisons of dielectric losses from the metal-substrate interface. Finite-element electromagnetic simulations are used to determine participation ratios of the four major regions of the on-chip devices, as well as to confirm lack of crosstalk between neighboring devices and demonstrate coupling tunability over three orders of magnitude. This mask is intended as an open-source community resource for facilitating precise and accurate comparisons of materials in the single-photon, millikelvin regime.

Self-supported MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets embedded in a carbon cloth as a binder-free substrate for high-energy lithium–sulfur batteries

As one of the most prospective candidates for next-generation rechargeable batteries, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries currently still encounter great challenges associated with the low conductivity, severe shuttle effects, and sluggish redox kinetics. Herein, a self-supported sulfur host is fabricated by an in-situ growth of MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets on a carbon cloth (CC). First, carbon cloth serves as a good template for the morphology-controlled synthesis of nanostructured materials, which not only alleviates the agglomeration of MoO2/MoS2, but also enhances the flexibility and mechanical strengthen of the hybrid architecture as a free-standing host. Second, the polysulfide-trapping ability can be greatly enhanced by both physical and chemical adsorption from the MoO 2 /MoS 2 -anchored carbon cloth. Moreover, the partially sulfurized MoO 2 /MoS 2 nano-sheets integrate the benefits of conductive MoO 2 and sulfiphilic MoS 2 , thus facilitating fast charge transfer and redox kinetics of polysulfide conversion. As a result, these attributes enable the host to hold a high sulfur loading (up to 7.6 mg cm -2 ), which exceeds most of the reported carbon cloth-related cathode work in the literature. Furthermore, the Li-S cells can achieve a high peak capacity of 1350 mA h g -1 , excellent rate capability (C/20 - 2C rate), impressive areal capacity (up to 6.3 mA h cm -2 ), and a high capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles.

Substrate Channeling via a Transient Protein-Protein Complex: The case of D-Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase and L-Lactate Dehydrogenase

Molecular dynamics studies showed that LDH and GAPDH tetramers can form a complex which can breakdown when the enzymes are saturated with NADH molecules. The interaction sites are conserved between LDH isozymes from heart and muscle cells, and between GAPDH molecules from rabbit and yeast cells. Positive electric fields between the NAD(H) binding sites showed that NAD(H) channeling within LDH-GAPDH complex can be an extension of NAD(H) channeling between the adjacent subunits within LDH and GAPDH tetramers. Analytical ultracentrifugation and enzyme kinetics studies indicated that LDH and GAPDH molecules can form a transient channeling complex. The transient complex can support the channeled and the diffusive paths in parallel, the relative contribution from each path depends on the off-rates for (GAPDH-NADH)-LDH complex and GAPDH-NADH complex. Negative cooperativity in NADH binding to different subunits in GAPDH tetramers can provide allosteric regulation of NADH channeling from GAPDH to LDH.

Engineering Escherichia coli to produce medium chain oleochemicals from C 2 substrates

Many strategies to create a circular bioeconomy have been proposed. To be successful, CO 2 must be reduced with renewable energy into chemical building blocks, from which the chemical industry can be supported. Circular strategies include leveraging photosynthesis to produce sugar and lipid intermediates or renewable electricity to produce hydrogen or other electron carriers to support CO 2 reduction. Acetogens can anaerobically reduce CO 2 with H 2 to produce mixtures of small organic molecules in gas fermentations. We previously demonstrated that acetate, a common product of gas fermentation, can be converted to the model oleochemical dodecanol in engineered Escherichia coli. Here, we explored the conversion of ethanol and mixtures of ethanol and acetate to the same model oleochemicals. Co-feeding ethanol can supply both carbon and additional reducing power relative to acetate alone. In this work, we engineered E. coli to catabolize ethanol and expressed two distinct ethanol metabolism pathways in different operons and combined them with improved engineered acetate activation. We evaluated the performance of these operons in dodecanol-producing strains when fed ethanol or acetate and found ethanol to be a better carbon source when judged by product titers. The engineered strains fed ethanol produced about two-fold more dodecanol than the strains fed acetate. This increase was in part, due to change in product distribution. Cells fed ethanol produced predominantly dodecanol, whereas cells fed acetate generated a mixture of dodecanol and dodecanoic acid. Dodecanol titers were further improved by employing feeding strategies in controlled bioreactors.

Reformed Mesoporous Ge for Substrate Reuse in III-V Solar Cells

Mesoporous Ge was generated by bipolar electrochemical etching of (100) Ge. Through high-temperature annealing experiments, we found that the mesoporous Ge microstructure produces pore coalescence deep in the structure rather than at the surface. III-V epitaxy on annealed porous Ge with subsurface coalescence and coral-like structures on the surface produced shunted photovoltaic devices. The roughness of the annealed porous Ge film was reduced by a pre-annealing HBr treatment and a post-annealing ultrasonic DI water dip. A smoother reformed surface was obtained, on which a GaInAs upright device with an efficiency of 5.7% was grown, demonstrating a first step towards technical viability.
