O-rings with mylar back-up provide high- pressure cryogenic seal

Mylar lip type back-up ring installed in combination with three rubber O-rings seal the junctions between a tube stub and an adapter during high pressure gas flow at cryogenic to room temperatures. Mylar seals should not be used with oxygen under pressure or in the liquid state.

Inflatable O-ring seal would ease closing of hatch cover plate

Inflatable O-ring seal provides positive sealing means that does not require the manual exertion of a large compressive force during opening or closing of a rotary-type hatch cover plate. The O-ring is deflated during opening and closing and inflated after closure by a gas pressure source.

High-reluctance rotor rings improve homopolar generator performance

Nonmagnetic metal rings imbedded in a homopolar generator rotor normal to its axis keep the induction flux entering the rotor in a radial path. Use of the rings permits optimum rotor design for any given set of operating requirements and simplifies the task of predicting the operation characteristics of the generator.

Lateral ring metal elastic wheel absorbs shock loading

Lateral ring metal elastic wheel absorbs practically all shock loading when operated over extremely rough terrain and delivers only a negligible shock residue to associated suspension components. The wheel consists of a rigid aluminum assembly to which lateral titanium ring flexible elements with treads are attached.

Toroidal ring prevents gas ignition at vent stack outlet

Torodial ring welded to the vent stack outlet prevents static discharges which ignite combustible gases in a venting system. The ring inhibits the flow of current by removing the cause of turbulence characteristics of a sharply defined vent exit.

Improved gas ring laser

Minimizing mode coupling improves sensing resolution of a gas ring laser in a gimballess gyroscope system or inertial rotation sensor. The piezoelectric-driven corner mirrors of the ring laser are oscillated in a direction parallel to their surfaces and the plane of rotation.

Inorganic glass ceramic slip rings

Prototypes of slip rings have been fabricated from ceramic glass, a material which is highly resistant to deterioration due to high temperature. Slip ring assemblies were not structurally damaged by mechanical tests and performed statisfactorily for 200 hours.

Ring structure of a neutral gas cloud studied in a one-dimensional expansion into space

A one dimensional treatment of the expansion of a gas cloud of uncharged particles into vacuum is discussed. It is determined that the whole cloud does not change from continuum to free molecular flow at the same time. Some regions of the cloud make the transition sooner than others. An explanation of the ring structure observed during barium cloud experiments is presented using this conclusion. An analysis of the velocity distributions for the two kinds of flow yields a velocity distribution for the whole cloud that exhibits ring structure.

Optimum mass-strength analysis for orthotropic ring-stiffened cylinders under axial compression

An analysis was developed to calculate the minimum mass-strength curve for an orthotropic cylinder subjected to axial compressive loading. The analysis, which includes the effects of ring and stringer eccentricities, is in a general form so that various cylinder wall and stiffener geometries can be considered. Several different ring-stiffened orthotropic configurations were studied. The minimum mass-strength curves and the dimensions associated with these curves are presented for (in order of decreasing efficiency) a tubular double bead, a nonsymmetric double bead, a Z-stiffened skin, and a trapezoidal corrugation. A comparison of efficiencies of the configurations shows a tubular element cylinder to be more efficient than a 3-percent core-density honeycomb-sandwich cylinder. It was found that for an optimized Z-stiffened skin, the location of the Z-stiffeners (internal or external) made a negligible difference in efficiency.

Electrostatic instability of ring current protons beyond the plasmapause during injection events

The stability of ring current protons with an injection spectrum modeled by an m = 2 mirror distribution function was examined for typical ring current parameters. It was found that the high frequency loss cone mode can be excited at wave numbers K lambda sub Di about = to 0.1 to 0.5, at frequencies omega about = to (0.2 to 0.6) omega sub pi and with growth rates up to gamma/omega about = to 0.03. These waves interact with the main body of the proton distribution and propagate nearly perpendicular to the local magnetic field. Cold particle partial densities tend to reduce the growth rate so that the waves are quenched at or near to the plasmapause boundary. Wave e-folding lengths are comparable to 0.1 R sub e, compared to the value of about 4 R sub e found for ion cyclotron waves at the same plasma conditions.

Large spacecraft antennas: Conical ring-membrane reflectors

A 1.83-m diameter furlable conical Gregorian antenna based on a novel spoke-supported ring-membrane concept has been successfully demonstrated. Mechanical measurements of the conical reflecting surface, as well as BE gain measurements at Ku-band, show an rms surface deviation from the proper conical surface of 0.3 mm and a repeatability after multiple furling-unfurling cycles of + or - 0.05 mm. Design features and performance characteristics of this antenna indicate that the spoke-supported ring-membrane concept is a promising approach for producing large, furlable, lightweight, conical reflectors for spacecraft high-gain antennas.

The synergistic effects of slip ring-brush design and materials

The design, fabrication, and testing of four power slip rings for synchronous orbit application are considered. Environmental and instrumentation systems necessary for monitoring electrical noise, friction, and brush wear in air and at less than 5 X 10 to the minus 8th power torr were developed. Composite brushes consisting of silver-molybdenum disulfide-graphite and silver-niobium diselenide-graphite were employed on rings of coin silver and rhodium plate. These four contact combinations were tested during ambient condition run-in at 150 and a humidity sequence at 0.1. The first nine months of a two year vacuum test performed at 0.1 rpm were completed.

Computer program: Jet 3 to calculate the large elastic plastic dynamically induced deformations of free and restrained, partial and/or complete structural rings

A user-oriented FORTRAN 4 computer program, called JET 3, is presented. The JET 3 program, which employs the spatial finite-element and timewise finite-difference method, can be used to predict the large two-dimensional elastic-plastic transient Kirchhoff-type deformations of a complete or partial structural ring, with various support conditions and restraints, subjected to a variety of initial velocity distributions and externally-applied transient forcing functions. The geometric shapes of the structural ring can be circular or arbitrarily curved and with variable thickness. Strain-hardening and strain-rate effects of the material are taken into account.

Modulation of ring-laser mode coupling.

This paper develops an analytical, algebraic formalism that predicts effects induced in ring lasers by phase modulation, corresponding both to mode-decoupling mechanisms deliberately incorporated in the ring laser and to naturally occurring periodic or random angular or linear accelerations. The analysis is based on an approach that seems potentially convenient in the analysis of other systems that are physically stable but mathematically nonlinear.

Analysis of a laterally loaded ring with a hinged cross section.

A ring assembly constructed by lacing together three elements into a basic channel cross section is analyzed. The ring is supported at three equidistant points and loaded by a uniform distribution of radial and transverse loads. Bulkheads may be introduced at discrete cross sections to prevent distortion. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the behavior of the deflection as the number and location of the bulkheads and the degree of rigidity of the supports are varied. The method of analysis is an application of the Principle of Virtual Work within the framework of small displacement theory. Numerical results are presented for the geometrical parameters of a model. An important result is the observation that bulkheads have virtually no effect on the deflections of the web.

Testing techniques and comparisons between theory and test for vibration modes of ring stiffened truncated-cone shells.

Vibration tests were carried out on truncated-cone shells with widely spaced ring stiffeners. The models were excited by an air shaker for LF modes and by small electrodynamic shakers for HF modes. The Novozhilov thin shell theory according to which a ring is an assembly of an arbitrary number of segments, each being a short truncated-cone shell of uniform thickness, is used in the analysis of the results. A mobile, noncontacting, displacement-sensitive sensor system developed by the author was used in the tests. Tests results are given for a free-free 60-deg cone and for a clamped-free 60-deg cone. The tests are characterized as having considerable value for the classification of prevalent multimode responses in shells of this type.
