Excitation function of 54 Fe(p, α ) 51 Mn from 9.5 MeV to 18 MeV

Excitation function of the 54 Fe(p,α) 51 Mn reaction was measured from 9.5 to 18 MeV $E_{0,p^+}$ by activating a foil stack of 54 Fe electrodeposited on copper substrates. Residual radionuclides were quantified by HPGe gamma ray spectrometry. Both 51 Mn ($t_{1/2}$ = 46.2 min, $\langle E_{β^+}\rangle$=963.7keV, $I_{β^+}$ = 97%; $E_γ$ = 749.1keV, $I_γ$ = 0.265%) and its radioactive daughter, 51 Cr ($t_{1/2}$ = 27.704d, $E_γ$ = 320.1 keV, $I_γ$ = 9.91%), were used to indirectly quantify formation of 51 Mn. Results agree within uncertainty to the only other measurement in literature and predictions of default TALYS theoretical code. Final relative uncertainties are within ±12%.

Synthesis and structural characterization of bis (2-pyridylthio)( p -tolylthio)methyl zinc complexes and the catalytic hydrosilylation of CO 2

Bis(2-pyridylthio)(p-tolylthio)methane, [Bptm STol ]H, has been synthesized by treatment of a 2:1 mixture of 2-mercaptopyridine and p-thiocresol with NaH, followed by addition of CHI3. Access to zinc complexes is provided by the reaction of [Bptm STol ]H with Zn[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ] 2 to afford [Bptm STol ]ZnN(SiMe 3 ) 2 , from which the halide derivatives [Bptm STol ]ZnX (X = Cl, Br, I) are obtained via reaction with Me 3 SiX (X = Cl, Br, I), and the formate complex, [Bptm STol ]ZnO 2 CH, is obtained by treatment with CO 2 in the presence of PhSiH 3 . Here, the molecular structures of [Bptm STol ]ZnN(SiMe 3 ) 2 , [Bptm STol ]ZnX (X = Cl, Br, I) and [Bptm STol ]ZnO 2 CH have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, which indicate that the four coordinate zinc centers adopt structures that are intermediate between idealized trigonal monopyramidal and seesaw geometries. [Bptm STol ]ZnO 2 CH is a catalyst for the hydrosilylation of CO 2 by (RO) 3 SiH at room temperature to afford the silyl formate, HCO 2 Si(OR) 3 .

Accelerated reliability tests of n + and p + poly-Si passivated contacts

We report on the stability of encapsulated, low-pressure chemical vapor-deposited phosphorus (n + poly-Si) doped and boron (p + poly-Si) doped poly-Si/SiO x passivated contacts by exposing the samples to three different accelerated tests: damp heat test, thermal cycling and ultraviolet exposure, adhering closely to the IEC 61215 standard. Outdoor testing was also performed by exposing the samples in the outdoor testing field at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and preliminary data accumulated for 1000 h from February to April of 2021 is reported. We studied non-metallized, thermally-metallized, and screen-printed n + and p + poly-Si by monitoring the effective minority carrier lifetime at the implied maximum power point using a Sinton lifetime tester, and recorded photoluminescence images before and after the exposure. Furthermore, the samples were found to be stable under all test conditions, which is encouraging for incorporation of these contacts in next-generation industrial silicon solar cells.

p -Azaquinodimethane: A Versatile Quinoidal Moiety for Functional Materials Discovery

The past 50 years of discovery in organic electronics have been driven in large part by the donor–acceptor design principle, wherein electron-rich and electron-poor units are assembled in conjugation with each other to produce small band gap materials. While the utility of this design strategy is undoubtable, it has been largely exhausted as a frontier of new avenues to produce and tune novel functional materials to meet the needs of the ever-increasing world of organic electronics applications. Its sister strategy of joining quinoidal and aromatic groups in conjugation has, by comparison, received much less attention, to a great extent due to the categorically poor stability of quinoidal conjugated motifs. In 2017 though, the p-azaquinodimethane (AQM) motif was first unveiled, which showed a remarkable level of stability despite being a close structural analogue to p-quinodimethane, a notably reactive compound. In contrast, dialkoxy AQM small molecules and polymers are stable even under harsh conditions and could thus be incorporated into conjugated polymers. When polymerized with aromatic subunits, these AQM-based polymers show notably reduced band gaps that follow reversed structure–property trends to some of their donor–acceptor polymer counterparts and yield organic field-effect transistor (OFET) hole mobilities above 5 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . Additionally, in an ongoing study, these AQM-based compounds are also showing promise as singlet fission (SF) active materials due to their mild diradicaloid character. An expanded world of AQMs was accessed through their ditriflate derivatives, which were first used to produce ionic AQMs (iAQMs) sporting two directly attached cationic groups that significantly affect the AQM motif’s electronics, producing strongly electron-withdrawing quinoidal building blocks. Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) created with these iAQM building blocks exhibit optical band gaps stretching into the near-infrared I (NIR-I) region and showed exemplary behavior as photothermal therapy agents. In contrast to these stable AQM examples, the synthetic exploration of AQMs also produced examples of more typical diradicaloid reactivity but in forms that were controllable and produced intriguing and high-value products. With certain substitution patterns, AQMs were found to dimerize to form highly substituted [2.2]paracyclophanes in distinctly more appreciable yields than typical cyclophane formation reactions. Certain AQM ditriflates, when crystallized, undergo light-induced topochemical polymerization to form ultrahigh molecular weight (>10 6 Da) polymers that showed excellent performances as dielectric energy storage materials. These same AQM ditriflates could be used to produce the strongly electron-donating redox-active pentacyclic structure: pyrazino[2,3-b:5,6-b']diindolizine (PDIz). Importantly, the PDIz motif allowed for the synthesis of exceedingly small band gap (0.7 eV) polymers with absorbances reaching all the way into the NIR-II region that were also found to produce strong photothermal effects. Both as stable quinoidal building blocks and through their controllable diradicaloid reactivity, AQMs have already proven to be versatile and effective as functional organic electronics materials.

On the Effects of Aliovalent Substitutions in Thermoelectric Zintl Pnictides. Varied Polyanionic Dimensionality and Complex Structural Transformations–The Case of Sr 3 ZnP 3 vs Sr 3 Al x Zn 1– x P 3

The structures and the transport properties of a novel family of Zintl phosphides and arsenides with the formula AE 3 ZnPn 3 and the solid solutions AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 , AE 3 ZnAs y P 1–y (AE = Sr, Eu; Pn = P, As) are reported. Crystals of nine new phases have been obtained via Pb-flux reactions and used for structural work by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The derived orthorhombic structure is without a direct analog, and features unusual structural units, where the Zn atoms are in both distorted tetrahedral and trigonal-planar coordination of pnictogens. Electronic structure calculations reveal moderately wide bandgaps for Sr 3 ZnP 3 and Sr 3 ZnAs 3 , on the order of 0.70 and 0.63 eV, respectively. Electrical transport measurements above room temperature indicate relatively high resistivity values above 500 K (ρ ≈ 4.8 Ω cm and above), but some of the samples exhibit very high Seebeck coefficients, as large as 300 μV/K at 560 K for Sr 3 ZnAs 3 . Aliovalent substitutions in AE 3 ZnPn 3 , achieved by the partial replacement of Zn 2+ with Al 3+ cations promote occupational and positional disorder, which causes structural transformation towards the disordered variant of the Sr 5 Al 2 Sb 6 structure type. Such substitutions also change the dimensionality of the polyanionic sub-lattice in the resulting quaternary AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 phases. Furthermore, preliminary transport property data on the latter reveal nine times lower electrical resistivity (ρ 500 ≈ 0.5 Ω cm) together with a significantly enhanced Seebeck coefficient, αmax ≈ 430 μV/K at 560 K.

A Bis(arenesulfonyl) Peroxide, an Ambient-Stable Oxidant, Is a Strong p-Dopant for Organic Semiconductors

Strong p-dopants are required to dope high-ionization energy organic semiconductors for a variety of potential applications, but strong, simple one-electron oxidants are typically sensitive to reduction by atmospheric moisture and thus challenging to store or handle. Here we show that bis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonyl) peroxide─a dimer formed by two highly oxidizing radicals─can function as a water-stable yet powerful oxidant, cleanly reacting with some organic semiconductors to form two radical cations and two 3,5-bis-(trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonate anions, although in other cases sulfonylation reactions can also occur. Notably, this peroxide is capable of p-doping the high-ionization energy polymer poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl)- alt -(benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazol-4,7-diyl)] (F8BT) to afford electrical conductivities of up to 0.03 S cm –1 , while its use with electron-rich poly(3,4-dialkoxythiophene-2,5-diyl) derivatives can afford values up to 100 S cm –1 . Quantum-chemical calculations reveal the peroxide oxidant behaves in a fashion mirroring that of relatively oxygen-stable, but highly reducing, n-dopants that have been developed based on dimers of organic radicals or organometallic sandwich compounds.

Synthesis and Characterization of [Ni(H 2 O)(7-P Ph 2 N ArSO3 ) 2 ](NaBF 4 ) for Light-Driven Quantum Dot-Catalyst Hydrogen Evolution

Light-driven hydrogen generation from water is a route to carbon-neutral fuels. However, the integrated light absorbers and catalysts must be compatible and functional under the same conditions. A sulfate-functionalized complex, [Ni(H 2 O)(7-P Ph 2 N ArSO3 ) 2 ](NaBF 4 ), where P Ph 2 N ArSO3 = 4-(3,6-diphenyl-1,3,6-azadiphosphepan-1-yl)benzenesulfonate), was synthesized and characterized. A solid-state structure from single-crystal X-ray crystallography is also reported. The electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution of this complex in 7:3 H 2 O:CH 3 CN was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, with a maximum observed rate of 83 s –1 . Density functional theory was used to characterize the favorable binding of the sulfate functionalities to cadmium sulfide quantum dots. Experimental assembly of these catalysts onto cadmium sulfide quantum dots was successful. In conclusion, both fast electron transfer and light-driven pH-dependent hydrogen evolution were observed.

Flow Reactor Study of the Soot Precursors of Novel Cycloalkanes as Synthetic Jet Fuel Compounds: Octahydroindene, p -Menthane, and 1,4-Dimethylcyclooctane

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) or Synthetic aviation turbine fuels (SATFs) derived from nonpetroleum sources are essential for energy security and a strong rural and agricultural economy. Airplanes operating on SAF can have lower particle emissions compared to those of conventional jet fuel, reducing air quality impacts near airports. Processing biobased isoprene or wood and agricultural waste can produce cycloalkane-rich fuels with properties meeting ASTM International’s SATF requirements. The unique structures of these cycloalkanes yield lower soot emissions because of their lack of aromatic rings. We measured the soot formation tendency as yield sooting index (YSI) and used laminar flow reactor experiments to evaluate soot precursors formed for isoprene-derived compounds p-menthane and 1,4-dimethylcyclooctane (DMCO), and octahydroindene (OHI)─ produced from woody biomass via catalytic fast pyrolysis. The combustion chemistry of the OHI and DMCO has not been previously studied. Experiments were conducted at 10 bar from 800 to 1200 K, equivalence ratios of 1.0 and 3.0, and residence times of 1.0 and 0.6 s, respectively. Experimentally detected species were used to elucidate the mechanisms of soot precursor formation. OHI exhibited the highest YSI (94.5) and formed a high concentration of benzene primarily by direct dehydrogenation of the six-membered ring. p-Menthane (YSI 92.0) and DMCO (YSI 85.0) oxidation products included fewer aromatic components but higher benzene precursors, including 1,3-butadiene, propyne, and allene. This suggests that the ring-opening pathway is dominant over the dehydrogenation pathway in the benzene formation for these compounds. This experimental speciation provides insight into the influence of the cycloalkane structure on the sooting tendencies of potential SAF blend components, thereby aiding in fuel design processes.

On the Use of Aqueous Metal-Aqua p K a Values as a Descriptor of Lewis Acidity

The behavior of Lewis acidic metal ions in multimetallic systems has become a subject of intense interest in recent years. Parametrizing the behavior of these ions in non-aqueous conditions, commonly used in the field, is challenging due to the lack of direct measures of the Lewis acidity of metal ions in polar organic solvents. Here, we report the use of triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) as a 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe to quantify the Lewis acidity of a library of metal triflate salts using the Gutmann-Beckett method. Plots of the pK a values of the corresponding metal-aqua species, [M(H 2 O) m ] n+ , measured in H 2 O vs. the 31 P NMR shifts of TPPO in the presence of these metals in deuterated acetonitrile (d3-MeCN) and deuterated dichloromethane (CD 2 Cl 2 ) display tightly co-linear relationships, suggesting similar behavior for these ions in water, d 3 -MeCN, and CD 2 Cl 2 . This collinearity reinforces the utility of the common approach of using the aqueous pK a values as a descriptor of Lewis acidity, regardless of the solvent used in the immediate experiments, and provides an insight into the usefulness of this descriptor in wide-ranging applications. Titration studies in d 3 -MeCN suggest 1:1 binding of TPPO with monovalent ions, greater than 1:1 binding with divalent ions, and formation of multiple species with the highly Lewis acidic trivalent ions. Altogether, these data suggest that both aqueous pK a values and other single-measurement descriptors, while useful, provide only a snapshot of the influence of Lewis acidity on multimetallic chemical systems.

Crystal and Magnetic Structures of the Ternary Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 Compounds: An Example of Intermetallics Crystallizing with the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P Prototype

We report two new rare-earth (R) ternary intermetallic compounds—Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with T = Si and Ge—that correspond to the R 5 Ni 2 T 3 phase earlier reported to form in Dy–Ni–T and Ho–Ni–T ternary systems. The compounds crystallize in a filled version of the orthorhombic Zr 2 Ni 1–x P-type structure with x = 0.52; their stoichiometry, determined from both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, is centered on Ho 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 with a narrow solid solubility range for the silicide, while the germanide appears to be a line phase. In addition to R = Dy and Ho, R 2 Ni 0.8 T 1.2 compounds also form for R = Y and Tb, representing the first examples of rare-earth-based compounds adopting the Zr 2 Ni 1–x P structural prototype. Bulk magnetization data reveal the main transitions of the ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic type at TC = 38 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Si 1.2 and TC = 37 K for Ho 2 Ni 0.8 Ge 1.2 , which are followed by subsequent magnetic reordering at lower temperatures. Neutron diffraction shows complex magnetic structures below T C with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components and magnetic propagation vector κ 1 = [0, 0, 0]. Below T N ≅ 24 K (22 K) for the silicide (germanide), an additional antiferromagnetic coupling following an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector κ 2 = [κ x , 0, 0] appears to coexist with the first magnetic structure.

Unraveling the Effects of Cobalt on Crystal Growth and Solution Behavior of Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based Dimeric Clusters

We report the synthesis, characterization, and solution self-assembly of plenary Nb 6 P 2 W 12 -based transition-metal substituted polyoxometalate, which is obtained by simply adding transition metals (Co 2+ ) into aqueous solution containing cluster [(NbO 2 ) 6 P 2 W 12 O 56 ] 12- , which is obtained by an in situ synthetic method. The incorporation of Co 2+ ions significantly affects the crystal structure, resulting in the formation of a 1D chain-like crystal and the first example of a niobotungstate-based cobalt derivative cluster. The behavior and stability of this cluster in solution are confirmed by time-resolved static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and electrospray mass spectrometry studies.

Elucidation of a Metastable p(2 × 1) O Atom Adlayer Structure on Cu(111)

Cu-based catalysts are ubiquitous in many industrial reactions, including methanol synthesis. Under partially oxidizing conditions, Cu catalysts can have dynamic surface structures that greatly influence their reactivities. Therefore, elucidating the surface structures that are present on Cu, and looking for metastable structures, aids in the long term goal of understanding and controlling their catalytic behavior. Thin-film copper oxides such as the “29” and “44” structures have been described at length in the literature, but precursors to these thin-film oxides can be challenging to study because they exist only under certain conditions. Using a combination of experimental and computational surface science techniques, we discovered, modeled, and quantified a previously unreported O atom adlayer structure on Cu(111) with a p(2 × 1) unit cell. Here, we used scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the striped 2 × 1 structure and density functional theory (DFT) structure optimizations to identify the thermodynamically most favorable positions of Cu and O atoms in a p(2 × 1) unit cell. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption, we determined the stoichiometry of the structure to be 2:1 for surface Cu atoms to O adatoms, the same stoichiometry as that modeled by DFT. This work reports a new metastable structure formed on Cu(111) at the very initial stages of oxidation and is therefore worth considering in models of catalytically relevant redox processes at Cu surfaces.

Thermally Stable Ruthenium Contact for Robust p‑Type Tellurium Transistors

Tellurium (Te) is attractive for p-channel transistors due to its high hole mobility. Despite having a low thermal budget suitable for back-end-of-line (BEOL) monolithic integration, the practical realization of Te transistors is hindered by its thermal stability. In this work, we investigate thermal stability for Te thin films grown via scalable thermal evaporation. Our findings identify ruthenium as a more thermally stable contact for p-type Te transistors, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 250 °C. Ruthenium exhibits significantly lower diffusivity in Te compared to other contact metals commonly used such as nickel and palladium. Using the transfer-length method, we measured a contact resistance of 1.25 kΩ·μm at the ruthenium-tellurium interface. Additionally, the incorporation of high-κ ZrO2 encapsulation not only suppresses the sublimation of the Te channel at elevated temperatures but also serves as the gate dielectric in top-gate devices operating at 1 V, achieving an on/off current ratio of 105.

In Situ Characterization of Surface Recombination in p-Si/SiO x Based Photoelectrochemical Cells

Time-resolved infrared (TRIR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were utilized to quantify surface states present at silicon oxide (SiO x ) protected crystalline p-Si electrolyte interfaces. The primary goal was to identify p-Si/SiO x photoelectrodes with both low surface recombination rates and efficient multi-electron transfer to an acceptor present in the external electrolyte. Three SiO x layers were investigated: native oxide (nOx), chemical oxide (cOx), and rapid thermal annealed (RTA) thermal oxide (tOx). Comparative study with [Ru(bpy) 3 ](PF 6 ) 2 as the electron acceptor indicated that tOx was most optimal with a small effective recombination rate, multi-electron transfer capability, and photovoltage of 500 ± 50 mV. A secondary goal was to analyze the surface recombination rates with the Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) kinetic model. Two surface states were identified from this analysis, one closer to the CB edge (V t,1 ) and the other near the midgap (V t,2 ). EIS and SRH analyses revealed that a forming gas (5% H 2 /N 2 ) anneal (FGA) decreased surface recombination for tOx and nOx through a lower density of surface states. In the case of tOx, the infrared data indicated that V t,2 was completely removed. Here, the energetic positions of the band edges were correlated with the surface state density; low densities corresponded to more favorable potentials for inversion layer formation, which is expected to be most optimal for photocatalysis. Collectively this study indicates that the free carrier dynamics provided by TRIR represent a powerful in situ probe of the band edge and the surface state energetics in silicon based photoelectrochemical cells.

Photoactivated p-Doping of Organic Interlayer Enables Efficient Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Solution-processed organic semiconductor layers on rough surfaces tend to vary widely in thickness, significantly hindering charge extraction in relevant optoelectronic devices. Herein, we report the photoactivated p-doping of hole-transporting material (HTM) to enhance hole extraction for (textured) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, making the device performance less sensitive to the variation of hole transport layer thickness. We used the ionic compound 4-isopropyl-4'-methyldiphenyliodonium tetrakis(penta-fluorophenyl-borate) (DPI-TPFB) as a p-type dopant in poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA), which we used as the HTM. We observed that light soaking DPI-TPFB-doped PTAA shows approximately 22 times higher conductivity compared with an undoped PTAA film, which translated into an improved fill factor (FF) for tandem solar cells. Our tandem solar cells achieved an ~80% FF and 27.8% efficiency and operated at their maximum power point for 200 h without loss of performance, in addition to retaining ~83% of initial performance over a month of operation in an outdoor environment.

Direct and Indirect Interfacial Electron Transfer at a Plasmonic p-Cu 7 S 4 /CdS Heterojunction

Plasmonic semiconductors exhibit significant potential for harvesting near-IR solar energy, although their mechanisms of plasmon-induced hot electron transfer (HET) are poorly understood. We report a transient absorption study of plasmon-induced HET in p-Cu 7 S 4 /CdS type II heterojunctions. Near-IR excitation of the p-Cu 7 S 4 plasmon band at ~1400 nm leads to ultrafast HET into the CdS conduction band with a time constant of <150 fs and a quantum efficiency of ~0.054%. The injected hot electrons remain in CdS with an amplitude-weighted average lifetime of 1.9 ± 0.5 ns, significantly longer than that in Au/CdS heterostructures, suggesting that plasmonic semiconductors can slow down charge recombination due to the presence of a bandgap. The excited near-IR plasmon does not decay by coupling to the interfacial charge transfer transition, likely due to its energy mismatch. This study provides a detailed mechanistic understanding and possible directions for improving plasmonic HET in plasmonic semiconductor heterojunctions.

Quantum mechanical dataset of 836k neutral closed-shell molecules with up to 5 heavy atoms from C, N, O, F, Si, P, S, Cl, Br

Abstract We introduce the Vector-QM24 (VQM24) dataset comprehensively covering all possible neutral closed-shell small organic and inorganic molecules with up to five heavy (p-block) atoms: C, N, O, F, Si, P, S, Cl, Br. All valid stoichiometries, Lewis-rule-consistent graphs, and stable conformers (identified via GFN2-xTB) were enumerated combinatorially, yielding 577k conformational isomers spanning 258k constitutional isomers and 5,599 unique stoichiometries. DFT (ωB97X-D3/cc-pVDZ) optimizations were performed for all, and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC@PBE0(ccECP/cc-pVQZ)) energies are provided for 10,793 lowest-energy conformers with up to 4 heavy atoms. VQM24 includes structures, vibrational modes, rotational constants, thermodynamic properties (Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, ZPVEs, entropies, heat capacities), and electronic properties such as atomization, electron interaction, exchange-correlation, dispersion energies, multipole moments (dipole to hexadecapole), alchemical potentials, Mulliken charges, and wavefunctions. Machine learning models of atomization energies on this dataset reveal significantly higher complexity than QM9, with none achieving chemical accuracy. VQM24 offers a rigorous, high-fidelity benchmark for evaluating quantum machine learning models.
