TDM/FM/FDMA - A modulation technique for multiple-beam satellites which precludes cochannel interference and allows non-uniform geographic distribution of user channels

The technique outlined in this paper is intended to eliminate the problems of cochannel interference and uniform geographic distribution of user channels which arise in conventional designs for a multiple spot beam communication satellite to serve mobile telephony users across the CONUS. By time multiplexing FM/FDMA signal ensembles so that only those beams operating on distinct frequency subbands are allowed to transmit concurrently, cochannel interference arising from simultaneous frequency subband reuse is precluded. Thus, time disjoint frequency reuse is accomplished over a repetitive sequence of fixed time slots. By assigning different size subbands to each time slot, a market of nonuniform users can be accommodated. The technique results in a greatly simplified antenna feed system design for the satellite, at a cost of imposing the need for time slot synchronization on the mobile FM receivers whose ability for rejecting adjacent channel interference is somewhat diminished.

Multiple-pass trajectories for an aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle

This paper investigates the use of multiple-pass trajectories for aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicles (AOTV) as a means of reducing the severe aeroheating environment and the extreme sensitivity to off-nominal trajectory and atmospheric conditions. One-, two-, and three-pass trajectories were calculated for AOTV's with ballistic coefficients ranging from 5 to 150 psf. Compared to the single-pass case, the maximum heat rate was reduced by 30 percent for two passes and 45 percent for three passes, while the maximum acceleration was reduced by 40 percent and 55 percent, respectively. The sensitivity of the trajectories to variations in atmospheric and orbital parameters was not significantly reduced.

S band radar differential reflectivity measurements in multiple polarization planes along satellite slant paths

A novel approach to making differential reflectivity measurements in multiple polarization planes has been proposed. This paper describes a versatile technique using a mechanical polarization switch and the systematic errors in differential reflectivity measurements which result. Initial results of simultaneous X band slant path measurements of attenuation and depolarization at 11.6 GHz and differential reflectivity measurements at 2.8 GHz using a slow polarization switch are presented.

A new multiple beam satellite antenna for 30/20 GHz communications coverage of CONUS-experimental evaluation

Additional frequency bands are needed to satisfy requirements related to the rapid growth of satellite communications, and the utilization of the 30/20 GHz frequencies is being considered. The present investigation is concerned with the experimental verification phase of an antenna technology study sponsored by NASA. The feasibility of narrow (0.3 degree) directive beam scanning over the entire continental U.S. (CONUS) from a single antenna at 30/20 GHz is demonstrated. The POC (Proof-of-Concept) model is based on an employment of an offset shaped dual reflector optics. The main reflector and the subreflector are both fabricated from aluminum. Attention is given to feed array and beam-forming network, multiple beam antenna range tests, an analysis, and test results.

Error correction coding for frequency-hopping multiple-access spread spectrum communication systems

A communication system which would effect channel coding for frequency-hopped multiple-access is described. It is shown that in theory coding can increase the spectrum utilization efficiency of a system with mutual interference to 100 percent. Various coding strategies are discussed and some initial comparisons are given. Some of the problems associated with implementing the type of system described here are discussed.

Multiple parent bodies of ordinary chondrites

Thermal histories of chondrite parent bodies are calculated from an initial state with material in a powder-like form, taking into account the effect of consolidation state on thermal conductivity. The very low thermal conductivity of the starting materials makes it possible for a small body with a radius of less than 100 km to be heated by several hundred degrees even if long-lived radioactive elements in chondritic abundances are the only source of heat. The maximum temperature is determined primarily by the temperature at which sintering of the constituent materials occurs. The thermal state of the interior of a chondrite parent body after sintering has begun is nearly isothermal. Near the surface, however, where the material is unconsolidated and the thermal conductivity is much lower, the thermal gradient is quite large. This result contradicts the conventional 'onion-shell' model of chondrite parent bodies. But because the internal temperature is almost constant through the whole body, it supports a 'multiple-parent bodies' model, according to which each petrologic type of chondrite comes from a different parent body.

Analysis of inviscid and viscous flows in cascades with an explicit multiple-grid algorithm

A rapid technique is used for calculating inviscid and viscous flows in turbomachinery cascades. The Euler and thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the original explicit MacCormack algorithm. The Baldwin-Lomax eddy viscosity model is used for turbulent flows. Convergence to a steady state is accelerated by use of a variable time-step and a multiple-grid scheme. Computer time is reduced through vectorization. Details of the numerical method are presented along with computed results for two low-speed wind tunnel turning vanes, a space shuttle fuel pump turbine rotor, and a supersonic inflow compressor rotor. The method can predict subtle viscous flow phenomena in cascades and is fast enough to be used as a design tool. Previously announced in STAR as N84-22527

Mathematical models for cochannel interference in FH/MFSK multiple-access systems

FH/MFSK has been proposed for a multiuser spread spectrum digital communication system to combat both self-jamming and intentional jamming. An independence assumption at the energy detector outputs is used to evaluate such a system for a digitized voice mobile radio system (Yue, 1981). This paper presents a correlated model and compares its performance to an independence model under the symbol error probability criterion. A Gaussian process model is also developed for comparison. It is found that the conventional Gaussian approximation is inadequate in predicting the number of users that can be accommodated by an FH/MFSK system using the conventional receiver. Furthermore, for the cases evaluated, the independence model provides an excellent approximation to the correlated model. Additionally, a conditional Chernoff bound is presented for the more general case of frequency-hopping systems with multiple hops per symbol.

Two-dimensional compressible convection extending over multiple scale heights

The theoretical description of the dynamics of a stellar convection zone is considered, taking into account one of the most basic issues by studying compressible convection extending over multiple scale heights. A revised version of a code reported by Graham (1975) is employed. Two-dimensional simulations show that nonlinear compressible convection possesses cellular structures with strong localized downward-directed plumes and broader upflows. The horizontal flows which close the circulation within the cell satisfy an approximate Bernoulli integral along a considerable portion of the horizontal trajectory. Attention is given to details regarding the numerical methods, the properties of the numerical solutions, the overall effects of compressibility on nonlinear convection, and a comparison with anelastic modal solutions.

Advanced 30/20 GHz multiple-beam antennas for communications satellites

Design concepts under development utilize two separate spacecraft antenna systems, one uplink at 30 GHz and the other a downlink at 20 GHz, where each antenna provides multiple fixed and scanning beams. Two contractors completed configuration trade-off studies and breadboarding of critical technology components, and are fabricating and testing proof-of-concept (POC) models to demonstrate the technology feasibility. Technology developments required for the proposed systems are presented, along with each contractor's progress to date. The technology development areas discussed include: (1) offset Cassegrain and shaped reflector systems for narrow beams with low sidelobes and wideangle off-axis scan; (2) diplexed beam-forming networks for dual polarization, low sidelobes, and fixed and scan-beam operation; (3) fast switching networks for scanning beams; and (4) fabrication of precision feed components and large offset reflectors.

Wave multiple scattering by a finite number of unclosed circular cylinders

The boundary value problem of plane H-polarized electromagnetic wave multiple scattering by a finite number of unclosed circular cylinders is solved. The solution is obtained by two different methods: the method of successive scattering and the method of partial matrix inversion for simultaneous dual equations. The advantages of the successive scattering method are shown. Computer calculations of the suface currents and the total cross section are presented for the structure of two screens.

Rectification of single and multiple frames of satellite scanner imagery using points and edges as control

Rectification of single and overlapping multiple scanner frames produced by such satellite-borne scanners as the LANDSAT MSS was carried out using a newly developed comprehensive parametric model. Tests with both simulated and real image data demonstrate conclusively that this model in general is superior to the widely used polynomial model, and that the simultaneous rectification of overlapping frames using least squares techniques yields a high accuracy than sngle frame rectification due to the inclusion of tie points between the image frames. Used to control, edges or lines, whic are much more likely to be found in images, can replace conventional control points and can easily be implemented into the least squares approach. An efficient algorithm for findng corresponding points in image paris was developed which can be used for determining tie points between image frames and thus increase the ecnomy of the whole rectification procedure.

Operational effectiveness of a Multiple Aquila Control System (MACS)

The operational effectiveness of a multiple aquila control system (MACS) was examined under a variety of remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) mission configurations. The set of assumptions and inputs used to form the rules under which a computerized simulation of MACS was run is given. The characteristics that are to govern MACS operations include: the battlefield environment that generates the requests for RPV missions, operating time-lines of the RPV-peculiar equipment, maintenance requirements, and vulnerability to enemy fire. The number of RPV missions and the number of operation days are discussed. Command, control, and communication data rates are estimated by determining how many messages are passed and what information is necessary in them to support ground coordination between MACS sections.

A multiple linear regression analysis of hot corrosion attack on a series of nickel base turbine alloys

Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine an equation for estimating hot corrosion attack for a series of Ni base cast turbine alloys. The U transform (i.e., 1/sin (% A/100) to the 1/2) was shown to give the best estimate of the dependent variable, y. A complete second degree equation is described for the centered" weight chemistries for the elements Cr, Al, Ti, Mo, W, Cb, Ta, and Co. In addition linear terms for the minor elements C, B, and Zr were added for a basic 47 term equation. The best reduced equation was determined by the stepwise selection method with essentially 13 terms. The Cr term was found to be the most important accounting for 60 percent of the explained variability hot corrosion attack.

High-energy multiple muons and heavy primary cosmic-rays

Three-dimensional simulations were carried out on high-energy multiple muons. On the lateral spread, the comparison with the deep underground observations indicates that the primary cosmic rays include heavy nuclei of high content. A method to determine the average mass number of primary particles in the energy around 10 to the 15th power eV is suggested.

Sensitivity of single and multiple cosmic ray neutrons to the surrounding medium in a lead-free monitor

In 1981-1985 the neutron component of cosmic rays was recorded, the effect of cosmic ray multiplication in lead being disregarded. The recording device consisted of neutron counters placed in a polyethylene retarder (polyethylene tubes with wall thickness of 2 cm). The device registered neutrons formed directly on the surface or not deep underground; the intensity of neutrons depended on the chemical composition of the substance. The neutron component was also measured in the Moscow Canal, Belomor-Baltic Canal, and in the Atlantic Ocean. The time variation of 5 minute data of the intensity obtained in the Belomor-Baltic Canal and in the Atlantic Ocean relative to the mean value in the open sea (in %) is presented.
