Pseudo-Hot-Isostatic Pressing (P-HIP)

Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory developed a technology to produce high performance ceramic or metal with a combination of major key properties such as versatile-complicated shape, high density, uniform density distribution, and minimal amounts of starting material. The novel pseudo-hot-isostatic-pressing (P-HIP) uses graphite or boron nitride flakes as the stress transmission media to transmit stress instead of the conventional solid graphite punch. The graphite and boron nitride flakes are solid lubricants and can slide among one another to re-distribute the stress from high stress concentration area to the low stress concentration areas, resulting in a self-stress-relief action. This innovative P-HIP enables the manufacturing of complicated shapes with near-net-shape capability while minimizing the energy used and reducing waste. This is a revolutionary breakthrough to the ceramics and powder metallurgy industries.

The Analysis and Support for LANL Technology Testbed: High Altitude Balloon Gondola and Orion Eagle Gamma Ray Detection Instrument

The Analysis and Support for LANL Technology Testbed: High Altitude Balloon Gondola and Orion Eagle Gamma-Ray Detection Instrument is a project where Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), in conjunction with the University of Michigan, are looking into gamma-ray detection in a space-like environment. The purpose of the detection is to work on instruments that can assist with planetary exploration and nuclear deterrents using a High-Altitude Balloon (HAB). For this paper, the main focus is on the mechanical aspects related to the structural analysis of the gondola. It is vital to understand the structural analysis because it helps determine if the gondola can survive the changes in the environment and the different forces or shocks that it will experience when the parachute is deployed and at landing. Additionally, NASA's Balloon Program Office (BPO) has specific requirements to meet to achieve flight certifications. Part of those certifications requires the gondola to simulate different scenarios at specific conditions with various forces applied and orientations. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the calculations of each method and the force applied to get the right results. Once that is done, the information is inputted into the structural analysis modeling system. The system will aid the mechanical team in assessing the conditions of the gondola at each scenario and determine its margin of safety. After the gondola and instrument are certified, the payload will be able to fly. The HAB and payload are launched from NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) at Fort Sumner, NM. The official flight was on September 26th, 2021.

Use Attainability Analysis Aquatic Life Uses for Perennial Reach of Sandia Canyon [Slides]

The following information will be presented during the February 23, 2022 Accord Pueblos Technical Meeting. The purpose of the study is to determine if natural thermal conditions are preventing the attainment of Coldwater Aquatic Life Use in the perennial reach of the upper Sandia Canyon Assessment Unit (Sandia AU). The New Mexico Water Quality Standards allow for a change in the designated use if a Use Attainability Analysis (UAA) demonstrates that the use is not attainable due to one or more of six factors listed in 40 CFR 131.10(g), including naturally occurring pollutant concentrations. The Sandia AU is located in a perennial reach of upper Sandia Canyon between Sigma Canyon and NPDES Outfall 001. The classified Segment 20.6.4.126 NMAC comprises perennial waters within Los Alamos National Laboratory boundaries and includes the Sandia AU. Persistent surface flows originate from NPDES permitted effluent releases. These releases have occurred since the early 1950’s and continue today. The UAA examines several lines of evidence. NMED’s Air-Water Temperature Correlation (AWTC) model is used for identifying appropriate stream classifications and attainable aquatic life use subcategories. The model correlates between July average air temperatures (ATEMP) and maximum weekly average stream temperatures. Air temperatures are obtained from PRISM and LANL Meteorological Towers and used to derive ATEMP. Thermographs were placed in the Sandia AU to obtain measured stream temperatures during summer months when stream temperatures are the highest. Measured data is used with AWTC modeled data to determine if the Sandia AU is meeting its natural air temperature driven thermal condition.

Characterization of Tri-lab β-Tin (Sn)

This report documents details of the microstructure and mechanical properties of -tin (Sn), that is used in the Tri-lab (Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)) collaboration project on Multi-phase Tin Strength. We report microstructural features detailing the crystallographic texture and grain morphology of as-received -tin from electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD). Temperature and strain rate dependent mechanical behavior was investigated by multiple compression tests at temperatures of 200K to 400K and strain rates of 0.0001 /s to 100 /s. Tri-lab tin showed significant temperature and strain rate dependent strength with no significant plastic anisotropy. A sample to sample material variation was observed from duplicate compression tests and texture measurements. Compression data was used to calibrate model parameters for temperature and rate dependent strength models, Johnson-Cook (JC), Zerilli-Armstrong (ZA) and Preston-Tonks-Wallace (PTW) strength models.

An April Fools’ Day read from Lab history Famed physicist Richard Feynman’s safecracking, cipher-creating sense of play

Richard Feynman was fresh out of Princeton University’s doctoral program when recruited to assist in the creation of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos. In 1943, Lab director J. Robert Oppenheimer wrote that the 24-year-old was, “by all odds the most brilliant young physicist here, and everyone knows this.” Feynman attempted to live and examine life in a state of play and, as such, it’s only fitting to take a look back at the Nobel Prize winning scientist’s years at the wartime Lab as April Fools’ Day approaches.

LICS Modeling [Slides]

We propose to design a new diagnostic based on laser inverse Compton scattering (LICS) to study the dynamics of runaway electron formation during killer-pellet triggered disruptions in DIII-D, and their subsequent loss. Obtaining a better understanding of transient runaway electrons (and how to suppress them) is one of the highest priorities of the US fusion program. To enable this, we need better measurements of the runaway electron population during and after disruptions. We intend to measure point-wise time-resolved spatial profile and energy distributions of the runaway electrons while they are in the core of the tokamak plasma. While LICS measurements of relativistic e-beams have been successfully made on accelerators, they have never been done in a tokamak. We bring two innovations to this diagnostic concept which should enable 10 times better signal-to-noise ratios than previously envisioned. In particular, we will marry bright short pulse (10’s of picosecond) laser technologies with the availability of short-pulse gated x-ray imagers developed at Los Alamos for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), to reject noise generated by the tokamak and plasma environment. We will generate a Conceptual Physics Basis, a Preliminary Design, and a Final Design package, with associated DIII-D reviews, along with prototype component testing for the diagnostic over the course of the two year duration of this proposal.

MELCOR Accident Progression and Source Term Demonstration Calculations for a Heat Pipe Reactor

MELCOR is an integrated thermal hydraulics, accident progression, and source term code for reactor safety analysis that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) since the early 1980s. Though MELCOR originated as a light water reactor (LWR) code, development and modernization efforts have expanded its application scope to includ e non-LWR reactor concepts. Current MELCOR development efforts include providing the NRC with the analytical capabilities to support regulatory readiness for licensing non-LWR techno logies under Strategy 2 of the NRC?s near- term Implementation Action Plans. Beginning with the Next Generation Nuclear Project (NGNP), MELCOR has undergone a range of enha ncements to provide analytical capabilities for modeling the spectrum of advanced non-LWR concepts. This report describes the generic plant model developed to demonstrate MELCOR capabilities to perform heat pipe reactor (HPR) safety evaluations. The generic plant mode l is based on a publicly-available Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Megapower design as modified in the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Design A description. For plant aspects (e.g., reactor building size and leak rate) that are not described in the LANL and INL references , the analysts made assumptions needed to construct a MELCOR full-plant model. The HP R uses high assay, low-enrichment uranium (HALEU) fuel with steel cladding that uses heat pipes to transfer heat to a secondary Brayton air cycle. The core region is surrounded by a stainless-steel shroud, alumina reflector, core barrel and boron carbide neutron shield. The reactor is secured inside a below-grade cavity, with the operating floor located above the cavity. Example calculations are performed to show the plant response and MELCOR capabilities to characterize a range of accident conditions. The accidents selected for evaluation consider a range of degraded and failed modes of operation for key safety functions providing re activity control, the primary and secondary system heat removal, and the effectiveness of th e confinement natural circulation flow into the reactor cavity (i.e., a flow blockage).

Facilitated Direct Liquid Fuel Cells with High Temperature Membrane Electrode Assemblies

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a liquid fuel of great potential impact due to its exceptionally high energy density. However, it has received minimal prior investigation as an alternative to either purified hydrogen or other liquid fuels, including methanol (MeOH). In the limited published literature work on direct dimethyl ether fuel cells, regardless of operating temperature, PtRu (either supported or unsupported on carbon) has been established as the standard catalyst of choice. The majority of the work in this program also utilized a Johnson Matthey (JM) HiSPEC ® 12100 PtRu/C (nominally 50% Pt, 25% Ru) while looking at electrode optimizations, beginning of life (BoL) performance, pressure- and temperature-dependent studies to look at the effect of binding affinity of DME oxidation intermediates, mass transport effects, crossover studies, and durability. However, it does also investigate some promising alternatives to PtRu/C as well, which should be investigated in more detail in further work. Those catalysts include a pair of ternary PtRuPd/C catalysts (from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Pajarito Powder, LLC. (PP)) as well as a Pt 2 Bi Black catalyst from Professor Anastasios Angelopoulos of the University of Cincinnati (UC). This work achieved several project objectives, including an optimization of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) process using PtRu/C anode catalyst. Additionally, these direct dimethyl ether fuel cells (DDFCs) were able to match or exceed many performance metrics for the state-of-the-art (SOA) direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), a primary and more evolved competitor to direct dimethyl ether fuel cells. This included peak specific power, total platinum group metal (PGM) loading, crossover current, degradation rate, start/stop cycling losses, and anode specific current.

Capability: Selective Endotoxin Uptake

Researchers at Los Alamos National Lab are developing a new capability to selectively absorb lipopolysaccharide, also known as endotoxin. Current sepsis treatment technologies generally target the bacteria causing the infection, but do not mitigate the host response that causes sickness. This disruptive capability could enable the removal of endotoxin from patient blood adding a much needed tool to the toolkit of sepsis treatments. We are seeking a CRADA partner with the desire to develop sepsis treatments and collaborate on the next steps.

Oppenheimer biographer tours Lab while movie is filmed locally

While a Hollywood movie crew filmed the Oppenheimer movie in Los Alamos these past few weeks, a special guest stopped by the Lab in between takes and chats with big-name actors. Director Thom Mason invited Kai Bird, co-author of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, to LANL while Bird was in town. The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, wrote the screenplay based on Bird’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, published in 2005. Oppenheimer was a physicist and the Lab’s first director of its wartime mission to secretly create the atomic bombs and help end World War II.

Additively Manufactured Tamper Evident Container

Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed a revolutionary and reliable new tamper evident container (TEC) to monitor and protect the health, security, and distribution of high-value assets, technological advancements, products, materials and more that are critical to the operations of businesses and government organizations. Unlike traditional tamper evident seals, the entire TEC serves as a seal, with encrypted on-board electronics able to continuously monitor and log structural health data including but not limited to force, temperature, pressure, humidity, orientation, radiation, acceleration, or vibration as needed. Analog and encrypted digital boards safely stored inside the TEC permanently record the complete integrity history of the protected items and have the ability to alert the TEC owners or take immediate defensive actions should a disruptive or tamper event take place.

Environmental Share: Damage to a Cultural Site from Off-Road Driving [Slides]

Cultural resources, including archaeological sites and historic buildings, at Los Alamos National Laboratory are protected under the National Historic Preservation Act. Disclosure of archaeological site locations is prohibited by law, which can make it difficult to communicate issues or identify where these sites occur. The Laboratory Cultural Resources Management Plan describes how we work to manage and protect these resources: https://permalink.lanl.gov/object/tr?what=info:lanlrepo/lareport/LA-UR-19-21590. Recently, our cultural resources staff identified vehicle damage to a site . There were no active projects occurring in this area, but evidence that vehicles had been driving over the site was visible. It is not possible to mark the locations of all cultural resources as there are about 2000 on Laboratory property.
