Joint Inversion and Forward Modeling of Gravity and Magnetic Data in the Ismenius Region of Mars

The unexpected discovery of remanent crustal magnetism on Mars was one of the most intriguing results from the Mars Global Surveyor mission. The origin of the pattern of magnetization remains elusive. Correlations with gravity and geology have been examined to better understand the nature of the magnetic anomalies. In the area of the Martian dichotomy between 50 and 90 degrees E (here referred to as the Ismenius Area), we find that both the Bouguer and the isostatic gravity anomalies appear to correlate with the magnetic anomalies and a buried fault, and allow for a better constraint on the magnetized crust].

Variability in the Inverse-Compton X-ray Flux from the Jet in Quasar 3C 345

We present the results of the first systematic study of correlated variability in the X-Ray emission and the parsec-scale radio structure of the superluminal quasar 3C 345. This quasar is one of a class of core-dominated flat-spectrum radio sources which are believed to emit X-rays via the synchrotron self-compton process.

Monitoring Canopy Moisture Using an Inversion Algorithm Applied to SAR Data from Boreas

During several intensive field campaigns in 1993 & 1994, the JPL airborne synthetic aperture radar obtained multifrequency polarimetric radar data over various areas in the Canadian boreal forest designated as primary BOREAS study sites. These were part of a major remote sensing effort geared toward studying the interaction of the forest biome and the atmosphere to identify their role in global change.

Inversion of Moisture Content of Forest Canopy and Floor from SAR Data

Several scattering mechanisms contribute to the total radar backscatter cross section measured by the synthetic aperture radar. These are volume scattering, trunk-ground double-bounce scattering, branch-ground double-bounce scattering, and surface scattering. All of these mechanisms are directly related to the dielectric constant of forest components responsible for that mechanism and their moisture.

Extended Horizon Liftings for Stable Inversion of Nonminimum-Phase Systems

The lifting of Lozano[9] is generalized, and shown to be one in a large class of liftings which enjoy the same zero annihilation properties (i.e., placement of transmission seros to the origin). Many useful properties of the new liftings are proved, and the results are discussed relevant to recent problems in control theory...
