Designing and Implementing a Distributed System Architecture for the Mars Rover Mission Planning Software (Maestro)

Distributed systems allow scientists from around the world to plan missions concurrently, while being updated on the revisions of their colleagues in real time. However, permitting multiple clients to simultaneously modify a single data repository can quickly lead to data corruption or inconsistent states between users. Since our message broker, the Java Message Service, does not ensure that messages will be received in the order they were published, we must implement our own numbering scheme to guarantee that changes to mission plans are performed in the correct sequence. Furthermore, distributed architectures must ensure that as new users connect to the system, they synchronize with the database without missing any messages or falling into an inconsistent state. Robust systems must also guarantee that all clients will remain synchronized with the database even in the case of multiple client failure, which can occur at any time due to lost network connections or a user's own system instability. The final design for the distributed system behind the Mars rover mission planning software fulfills all of these requirements and upon completion will be deployed to MER at the end of 2005 as well as Phoenix (2007) and MSL (2009).

Implementing EVM Data Analysis Adding Value from a NASA Project Manager's Perspective

Data Analysis is one of the keys to an effective Earned Value Management (EVM) Process. Project Managers (PM) must continually evaluate data in assessing the health of their projects. Good analysis of data can assist PMs in making better decisions in managing projects. To better support our P Ms, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) - Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) recently renewed its emphasis on sound EVM data analysis practices and processes, During this presentation we will discuss the approach that MSFC followed in implementing better data analysis across its Center. We will address our approach to effectively equip and support our projects in applying a sound data analysis process. In addition, the PM for the Space Station Biological Research Project will share her experiences of how effective data analysis can benefit a PM in the decision making process. The PM will discuss how the emphasis on data analysis has helped create a solid method for assessing the project s performance. Using data analysis successfully can be an effective and efficient tool in today s environment with increasing workloads and downsizing workforces

Panel: Practical Issues in Implementing Software Reliability Measurement

Many ways of estimating software systems' reliability, or reliability-related quantities, have been developed over the past several years. In this panel, we discuss practical issues to be addressed in implementing software reliabilty measurement techniques in a production development environment.

Mars Pathfinder Microrover- Implementing a Low Cost Planetary Mission Experiment

The Mars Pathfinder Microrover Flight Experiment (MFEX) is a NASA Office of Space Access and Technology (OSAT) flight experiment which has been delivered and integrated with the Mars Pathfinder (MPF) lander and spacecraft system. The total cost of the MFEX mission, including all subsystem design and development, test, integration with the MPF lander and operations on Mars has been capped at $25 M??is paper discusses the process and the implementation scheme which has resulted in the development of this first Mars rover.

A Stabilized Sparse-Matrix U-D Square-Root Implementation of a Large-State Extended Kalman Filter

The full nonlinear Kalman filter sequential algorithm is, in theory, well-suited to the four-dimensional data assimilation problem in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic problems. However, it was later discovered that this algorithm can be very sensitive to computer roundoff, and that results may cease to be meaningful as time advances. Implementations of a modified Kalman filter are given.

ScanSAR and Precision Processor Implementation at the Alaska SAR Facility

This paper summarizes the algorithm and hardware selection phases of the ScanSAR Processor (SSP) and Precision Processor (PP) implementation task for the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF). The SSP is being designed to specifically process RADARSAT ScanSAR mode SAR data while the PP is being designed to produce high precision image products from continuous mode SAR data from RADARSAT as well as ERS-1,2 and JERS-1. This paper describes the algorithms selected for the SSP and the PP; and reports on the hardware selection process in arriving at the target computing platform for these processors.
