A Model-Predictive Hierarchical-Control Framework for Aggregating Residential DERs to Provide Grid Regulation Services

This paper develops a hierarchical control frame-work to aggregate and to manage behind-the-meter distributed energy resources (DERs), which will be ubiquitous in future distribution systems. In the proposed framework, firstly, each controller in the hierarchy determines the flexibility of the DERs such that the obtained flexibility is feasible with respect to its operational purview. For example, the operational purview of a home energy management system may only consider consumer comfort preferences, while that for an aggregator or a grid controller may consider network voltage management as well. Based on the feasible flexibility, optimal setpoints for the DERs is then determined by the hierarchical controllers to help the distribution power network in voltage regulation, coordination issues with existing transmission-level conventional generators, etc. Therefore, the proposed strategy, which is based on model-predictive control, can be effectively utilized by the distribution network to coordinate several DERs to provide grid regulation services. Numerical simulations performed on the IEEE 37-bus test system demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Optimal Operation for Resilient and Economic Modes in an Islanded Alaskan Grid: Preprint

Power System is a complex system, with an objective to provide power to the customers. The objective is driven by a complex consideration of the secure, economic and resilient operation of the system. With the growing occurrence of extreme events emphasis has been shifted towards making the grid more resilient. However, an economic operation is still a priority for the utilities as well as its customers. Many utilities especially small isolated micro-grids do not emphasize much on an economic and resilient operation, but more on reliability. In this research we focus on striking a balance between economic and resilientoperation, ensuring reliability.

Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System for Cyber-Intrusion Detection in a Smart Grid

The evolution of the power grid has brought increasing deployment of advance metering infrastructure, penetration of intelligent electronic devices, and integration of physical power system components with information and communications technologies. With the fast-expanding connectivity, cyber vulnerabilities arise due to the use of internet-based communication systems. These systems are targets of cyber-intrusions which attempt to disturb the normal power system functions. Traditional intrusion detection algorithms have been developed without an explicit model of the cyber components. In this paper, an algorithm to detect false data injections in the power system is proposed considering both cyber and physical models of the power system. The algorithm is based on an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which collects information from state variables of the cyber-physical system to meet the performance requirements of the grid. Simulations of the proposed approach using the IEEE 13-bus test system validate the effectiveness of this artificial intelligence-based algorithm.

Machine-Learning-Driven, Site-Specific Weather Forecasting for Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings: Preprint

Emerging grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) have great potential to provide much-needed demand flexibility to electric grids while fulfilling their own control targets by co-optimizing smart appliances, solar photovoltaics, electric vehicles, and energy storage at buildings. To enable the optimal operation of GEBs, site-specific weather information—such as temperature, solar irradiance, relative humidity, and wind speed—is crucial; however, this information is generally unavailable or expensive to obtain. This paper develops advanced machine learning methods to provide precise weather forecasts for individual building sites using readily available weather station data. Support vector regression and artificial neural networks have been employed to learn the spatiotemporal correlations between the weather conditions at nearby weather stations and the individual building site. The proposed site-specific weather forecasting methods have been validated using 1-year actual weather measurement data collected in the Denver metro area. Results show that the developed machine-learning-driven methods can accurately forecast the temperature at the target building site 1 hour ahead with mean absolute error less than 0.72°C and a 48% improvement over the persistence method. Site-specific weather forecasts will improve the understanding of the microclimate effect and its impact on building energy consumption. This information will drive efficiency upgrades and adjustments of building control strategies to improve energy savings and increase flexibility in building loads.

Enabling Seamless Integration of EV Charging Infrastructure with Weak Electric Grids

Widespread adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for light, medium, and heavy duty (LD, MD, and HD) applications has gained significant interest. Based on ownership and user preferences, LD and local delivery MD EVs are typically connected to grid distribution networks whereas larger MD and HD EVs will be connected to distribution or even sub-transmission networks. Challenges with at-scale EVs and charging infrastructure supporting it include interoperability, distribution network upgrades, demand charges, power quality, voltage stability, etc. Based on real-world data, steady-state and dynamic assessments of LD EV adoption for weak distribution grids is presented.

Grid Value Investigation of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converters: Preprint

This paper presents the work which investigates the value that the medium voltage back to back (MVB2B) converter can bring to the grid, through two potential applications: voltage regulation powered by the reactive power adjustment function, and the distributed energy resource (DER) adoption enhancement powered by the quantitative power transfer function. Two groups of distribution systems have been prepared for the value investigation, including IEEE 123-bus system for voltage regulation study and two utility provided realistic distribution systems for DER adoption enhancement study. The analysis results have demonstrated that the MVB2B converter can bring significant value to the grid through the two aforementioned applications. Particularly, with MVB2B converter transferring power between two feeders, a substantial amount of backfeeding solar power can be avoided, and the size of the energy storage which is used to store the extra solar power can be significantly reduced.

Assessing the Technical Potential of Fast Frequency Response in Grid-Supportive Loads

Fast frequency response (FFR) is a critical tool for grid operators to manage contingency events in low-inertia systems. While large generators and loads are more commonly used, many smaller end use loads, in aggregate, can provide FFR across a large system. This work considers the technical potential of power electronics-based loads for autonomous FFR in low-inertia grids. We consider multiple factors that might influence the impact of FFR for various end use loads, with a focus on residential loads.

Generating Sequential PV Deployment Scenarios for High Renewable Distribution Grid Planning: Preprint

This paper introduces a novel approach for generating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant deployment scenarios for grid integration planning. The approach guarantees consistency among scenarios of the same deployment by ensuring that higher penetration scenarios contain PV units deployed in lower penetration scenarios. It also constrains the size and spatial distribution of the PV plants and considers three placement types. A case study on a real-world distribution system proves that the precepts of scenario consistency, deployment diversity, and placement are met. The study further investigates the impact of the resulting scenarios via a stochastic hosting capacity analysis. Results indicate that the ratio between PV and load sizes, referred to as the nodal PV penetration factor (NPPF), is a key driver of the grid integration impact. By reducing the NPPF from 5 to 2, the maximum hosting capacity increased by at least 112%. The study also reveals that scenarios under random placement can lead to higher hosting capacity values.

Soft Actor Critic Based Volt-VAR Co-optimization in Active Distribution Grids

Modern distribution networks are undergoing several technical challenges, such as voltage fluctuations, because of high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs). This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based Volt VAR co-optimization technique for reducing voltage fluctuations as well as power loss under high penetration of DERs. In addition, the proposed approach minimizes the operational cost of the grid. A stochastic policy optimization based soft actor critic (SAC) agent is proposed to configure the optimal set-points of the reactive power outputs of the inverters. The performance of the proposed model is verified on the modified IEEE 34- and 123-bus systems and compared with a base case scenario with no reactive supply by inverters, and a local droop control approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the conventional droop control method in improving the voltage profile, minimizing the network power loss, and reducing grid operational cost.
