Bulk viscosity of nuclear matter with pions in the neutrino-trapped regime

Recent work has shown that a population of thermal pions could modify the equation of state and transport properties of hot and dense neutron-rich matter and introduce new reaction pathways to change the proton fraction. In this article we study their impact on the bulk viscosity of dense matter, focusing on the neutrino-trapped regime that would be realized in neutron star mergers and supernovae. We find that the presence of a thermal population of pions alters the bulk viscosity by modifying the EoS (via the susceptibilities) and by providing new reaction pathways to achieve beta equilibrium. In neutron star merger conditions, the bulk viscosity in neutrino-trapped npeμ matter (without pions) has its peak at temperatures of at most a couple MeV and is quite small at temperatures of tens of MeV. We find that thermal pions enhance the low-temperature peak of the bulk viscosity by a factor of a few and shift it to slightly lower temperatures. At higher temperatures, where the pion abundance is large but the bulk viscosity is traditionally small, pions can increase the bulk viscosity by an order of magnitude or more, although it is still orders of magnitude smaller than its peak value.

Effect of magnetic fields on Urca rates in neutron star mergers

Isospin-equilibrating weak processes, called “Urca” processes, are of fundamental importance in astrophysical environments like (proto-)neutron stars, neutron star mergers, and supernovae. In these environments, matter can reach high temperatures of tens of MeVs and be subject to large magnetic fields. We thus investigate Urca rates at different temperatures and field strengths by performing the full temperature and magnetic-fielddependent rate integrals for different equations of state. We find that the magnetic fields play an important role at temperatures of a few MeV, especially close to or below the direct Urca threshold, which is softened by the magnetic field. At higher temperatures, the effect of the magnetic fields can be overshadowed by the thermal effects. Finally, we observe that the magnetic field influences the neutron decay rates more strongly than the electron-capture rates, leading to a shift in the flavor equilibrium.

Relativistic hybrid stars with sequential first-order phase transitions and heavy-baryon envelopes

We compute the mass, radius and tidal deformability of stars containing phase transitions from hadronic to quark phase(s). These quantities are computed for three types of hadronic envelopes: purely nuclear, hyperonic, and Δ-resonance--hyperon admixed matter. We consider either a single first-order phase transition to a quark phase with a maximally stiff equation of state (EOS) or two sequential first-order phase transitions mimicking a transition from hadronic to a quark matter phase followed by a second phase transition to another quark phase. We explore the parameter space which produces low-mass twin and triplet configurations where equal-mass stars have substantially different radii and tidal deformabilities. We demonstrate that while for purely hadronic stiff EOS the obtained maximum mass is inconsistent with the upper limit on this quantity placed by GW170817, the inclusion of the hyperonic and Δ-resonance degrees of freedom, as well as the deconfinement phase transition at sufficiently low density, produces a configuration of stars consistent with this limit. The obtained hybrid star configurations are in the mass range relevant for the interpretation of the GW170817 event. We compare our results for the tidal deformability with the limits inferred from GW170817 showing that the onset of non-nucleonic phases, such as Δ-resonance--hyperon admixed phase and/or the quark phase(s), are favored by this data if the nuclear EOS is stiff. Also, we show that low-mass twins and especially triplets proliferate the number of combinations of possible types of stars that can undergo a merger event, the maximal number being six in the case of triplets. The prospects for uncovering the first-order phase transition(s) to and in quark matter via measurements of tidal deformabilities in merger events are discussed.

Time scales for nonlinear processes in preheating after multifield inflation with nonminimal couplings

We have conducted extensive lattice simulations to study the postinflation dynamics of multifield models involving nonminimal couplings. In this work, we explore the parameter dependence of preheating in these models and describe the various time scales that control such nonlinear processes as energy transfer, rescattering, and the approach to radiation domination and thermalization. In the limit of large nonminimal couplings ($ξ_I$ ~ 100), we find that efficient transfer of energy from the inflaton condensate to radiative degrees of freedom, emergence of a radiation-dominated equation of state, and the onset of thermalization each consistently occur within $N_{\text{reh}} ≲ 3 e$-folds after the end of inflation, largely independent of the values of the other couplings in the models. The exception is the case of negative ellipticity, in which there is a misalignment between the dominant direction in field space along which the system evolves and the larger of the nonminimal couplings $ξ_I$. In those cases, the field-space-driven parametric resonance is effectively shut off. More generally, the competition between the scalar fields’ potential and the field-space manifold structure can yield interesting phenomena such as two-stage resonances. Across many regions of parameter space, we find efficient re-scattering between the distinct fields, leading to a partial memory loss of the shape of the initial fluctuation spectrum. Despite the explosive particle production, which can lead to a quick depletion of the background energy density, the nonlinear processes do not induce any superhorizon correlations after the end of inflation in these models, which keeps predictions for cosmic microwave background observables unaffected by the late-time amplification of isocurvature fluctuations. Hence the excellent agreement between primordial observables and recent observations is preserved for this class of models, even when we consider postinflation dynamics.

Total energy in supernova neutrinos and the tidal deformability and binding energy of neutron stars

The energy radiated in supernova neutrinos is a fundamental quantity that is closely related to the gravitational binding energy of a neutron star. Recently the tidal deformability of neutron stars was constrained by gravitational wave observations. By considering several equations of state, we find a strong correlation between the tidal deformability and neutron star binding energy. We use this correlation to sharpen predictions of the binding energy of neutron stars and the total neutrino energy in supernovae. We find a minimum binding energy for a neutron star formed in a supernova of ~ 1.5 × 10 53 ergs . Should the neutrino energy in a supernova be significantly below this value, it would strongly suggest new unobserved particles are carrying away some of the supernova energy. Alternatively, if the neutrino energy is observed above ~ 6 × 10 53 ergs , it would strongly imply the formation of a (perhaps surprisingly) massive neutron star.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Optimizing the lens sample in a combined galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing analysis

We investigate potential gains in cosmological constraints from the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing by optimizing the lens galaxy sample selection using information from Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 data and assuming the DES Year 1 metacalibration sample for the sources. We explore easily reproducible selections based on magnitude cuts in i-band as a function of (photometric) redshift, zphot, and benchmark the potential gains against those using the well-established redMaGiC [E. Rozo et al., Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 461, 1431 (2016)MNRAA40035-871110.1093/mnras/stw1281] sample. We focus on the balance between density and photometric redshift accuracy, while marginalizing over a realistic set of cosmological and systematic parameters. Our optimal selection, the MagLim sample, satisfies i<4zphot+18 and has ∼30% wider redshift distributions but ∼3.5 times more galaxies than redMaGiC. Assuming a wCDM model (i.e. with a free parameter for the dark energy equation of state) and equivalent scale cuts to mitigate nonlinear effects, this leads to 40% increase in the figure of merit for the pair combinations of Ωm, w, and σ8, and gains of 16% in σ8, 10% in Ωm, and 12% in w. Similarly, in ΛCDM, we find an improvement of 19% and 27% on σ8 and Ωm, respectively. We also explore flux-limited samples with a flat magnitude cut finding that the optimal selection, i<22.2, has ∼7 times more galaxies and ∼20% wider redshift distributions compared to MagLim, but slightly worse constraints. We show that our results are robust with respect to the assumed galaxy bias and photometric redshift uncertainties with only moderate further gains from increased number of tomographic bins or the inclusion of bin cross-correlations, except in the case of the flux-limited sample, for which these gains are more significant.

Reconstructing quintessence

We present an Effective Field Theory based reconstruction of quintessence models of dark energy directly from cosmological data. We show that current cosmological data possess enough constraining power to test several quintessence model properties for redshifts z ϵ [0, 1.5] with no assumptions about the behavior of the scalar field potential. We use measurements of the cosmic microwave background, supernovae distances, and the clustering and lensing of galaxies to constrain the evolution of the dark energy equation of state, Swampland Conjectures, the shape of the scalar field reconstructed potential, and the structure of its phase space. The standard cosmological model still remains favored by data and, within quintessence models, deviations from its expansion history are bounded to be below the 10% level at 95% confidence at any redshift below z = 1.5.

Observable signatures of enhanced axion emission from protoneutron stars

Here we perform general relativistic one-dimensional supernova (SN) simulations to identify observable signatures of enhanced axion emission from the pion-induced reaction π - + p →n + a inside a newly born protoneutron star (PNS). We focus on the early evolution after the onset of the supernova explosion to predict the temporal and spectral features of the neutrino and axion emission during the first 10 s. Pions are included as explicit new degrees of freedom in hot and dense matter. Their thermal population and their role in axion production are both determined consistently to include effects due to their interactions with nucleons. For a wide range of ambient conditions encountered inside a PNS, we find that the pion-induced axion production dominates over nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung processes. By consistently including the role of pions on the dense matter equation of state and on the energy loss, our simulations predict robust discernible features of neutrino and axion emission from a galactic supernova that can be observed in terrestrial detectors. For axion couplings that are compatible with current bounds, we find a significant suppression with time of the neutrino luminosity during the first 10 s. This suggests that current bounds derived from the neutrino signal from SN 1987A can be improved and that future galactic supernovae may provide significantly more stringent constraints.

Relativistic hybrid stars in light of the NICER PSR J0740 + 6620 radius measurement

We explore the implications of the recent radius determination of PSR J0740 + 6620 by the NICER experiment, combined with the neutron skin measurement by the PREX-II experiment and the associated inference of the slope of symmetry energy, for the structure of hybrid stars with a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to quark matter. Furthermore, we combine a covariant density-functional nucleonic equation of state (EOS) with a constant-speed-of-sound EOS for quark matter. We show that the radius and tidal deformability ranges obtained from GW170817 can be reconciled with the implication of the PREX-II experiment if there is a phase transition to quark matter in the low-mass compact star. In the high-mass segment, the EOS needs to be stiff to comply with the large-radius inference for PSR J0740 + 6620 and J0030 + 0451 with masses M ≃ 2 M ⊙ and M≃1.4 M⊙. We show that twin stars are not excluded, but the mass and radius ranges (with M ≥ M ⊙ ) are restricted to narrow domains ΔM twin ≲ 0.05 M ⊙ and ΔR twin ~ 1.0 km. We also show that the existence of twin configurations is compatible with the light companion in the GW190814 event being a hybrid star in the case of values of the sound-speed square s = 0.6 and s = 1/3.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology from cosmic shear and robustness to modeling uncertainty

Here, this work and its companion paper, Amon et al. [Phys. Rev. D 105, 023514 (2022)], present cosmic shear measurements and cosmological constraints from over 100 million source galaxies in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 data. We constrain the lensing amplitude parameter 𝑆 8 ≡𝜎 8 ⁢$\sqrt{Ω_{m}/0.3}$ at the 3% level in Λ⁢ CDM: 𝑆 8 =0.75⁢9$^{+0.025}_{−0.023}$ (68% CL). Our constraint is at the 2% level when using angular scale cuts that are optimized for the Λ⁢ CDM analysis: 𝑆 8 =0.77⁢2$^{+0.018}_{−0.017}$ (68% CL). With cosmic shear alone, we find no statistically significant constraint on the dark energy equation-of-state parameter at our present statistical power. We carry out our analysis blind, and compare our measurement with constraints from two other contemporary weak lensing experiments: the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) and Hyper-Suprime Camera Subaru Strategic Program (HSC). We additionally quantify the agreement between our data and external constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Our DES Y3 result under the assumption of Λ⁢ CDM is found to be in statistical agreement with Planck 2018, although favors a lower 𝑆 8 than the CMB-inferred value by 2.3⁢𝜎 (a 𝑝-value of 0.02). This paper explores the robustness of these cosmic shear results to modeling of intrinsic alignments, the matter power spectrum and baryonic physics. We additionally explore the statistical preference of our data for intrinsic alignment models of different complexity. The fiducial cosmic shear model is tested using synthetic data, and we report no biases greater than 0.3⁢𝜎 in the plane of 𝑆 8 ×Ω m caused by uncertainties in the theoretical models.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmological constraints from galaxy clustering and weak lensing

We present the first cosmology results from large-scale structure using the full 5000 deg 2 of imaging data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release 1. We perform an analysis of large-scale structure combining three two-point correlation functions ( 3 × 2 pt ): (i) cosmic shear using 100 million source galaxies, (ii) galaxy clustering, and (iii) the cross-correlation of source galaxy shear with lens galaxy positions, galaxy–galaxy lensing. To achieve the cosmological precision enabled by these measurements has required updates to nearly every part of the analysis from DES Year 1, including the use of two independent galaxy clustering samples, modeling advances, and several novel improvements in the calibration of gravitational shear and photometric redshift inference. The analysis was performed under strict conditions to mitigate confirmation or observer bias; we describe specific changes made to the lens galaxy sample following unblinding of the results and tests of the robustness of our results to this decision. We model the data within the flat Λ CDM and w CDM cosmological models, marginalizing over 25 nuisance parameters. We find consistent cosmological results between the three two-point correlation functions; their combination yields clustering amplitude S 8 = 0.77 6 - 0.017 + 0.017 and matter density Ω m = 0.33 9 - 0.031 + 0.032 in Λ CDM , mean with 68% confidence limits; S 8 = 0.77 5 - 0.024 + 0.026 , Ω m = 0.35 2 - 0.041 + 0.035 , and dark energy equation-of-state parameter w = - 0.9 8 - 0.20 + 0.32 in w CDM . These constraints correspond to an improvement in signal-to-noise of the DES Year 3 3 × 2 pt data relative to DES Year 1 by a factor of 2.1, about 20% more than expected from the increase in observing area alone. This combination of DES data is consistent with the prediction of the model favored by the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary anisotropy data, which is quantified with a probability-to-exceed p = 0.13 –0.48. We find better agreement between DES 3 × 2 pt and Planck than in DES Y1, despite the significantly improved precision of both. When combining DES 3 × 2 pt data with available baryon acoustic oscillation, redshift-space distortion, and type Ia supernovae data, we find p = 0.34 . Combining all of these datasets with Planck CMB lensing yields joint parameter constraints of S 8 = 0.81 2 - 0.008 + 0.008 , Ω m = 0.30 6 - 0.005 + 0.004 , h = 0.68 0 - 0.003 + 0.004 , and ∑ m ν < 0.13 eV (95% C.L.) in Λ CDM ; S 8 = 0.81 2 - 0.008 + 0.008 , Ω m = 0.30 2 - 0.006 + 0.006 , h = 0.68 7 - 0.007 + 0.006 , and w = - 1.03 1 - 0.027 + 0.030 in w CDM .

Slowly rotating gravastars

We solve Einstein’s equations for slowly rotating gravitational condensate stars (gravastars) up to second order in the rotation by expanding about the spherically symmetric gravastar with de Sitter interior and Schwarzschild exterior matched at their common horizon. Requiring that the perturbations are finite on the null surface reduces the exterior geometry to that of a Kerr black hole, implying that a slowly rotating gravastar cannot be distinguished from a Kerr black hole by any measurement or observation restricted to the macroscopic spacetime exterior to the horizon. Here we determine the interior solution, the surface stress tensor, and the Komar mass and angular momentum localized on the slowly rotating horizon surface. With the interior equation of state fixed at p = –ρ, finite junction conditions on the null horizon surface necessarily lead to an interior solution with a singular core, where the perturbative expansion breaks down. Comparison to other models and implications for more rapidly rotating gravastars are briefly discussed.

Numerical relativity simulations of prompt collapse mergers: Threshold mass and phenomenological constraints on neutron star properties after GW170817

We determine the threshold mass for prompt (no bounce) black hole formation in equal-mass neutron star (NS) mergers using a new set of 227 numerical relativity simulations. We consider 23 phenomenological and microphysical finite-temperature equations of state (EOS), including models with hyperons and first-order phase transitions to deconfined quarks. We confirm the existence of EOS-insensitive relations between the threshold mass, binary tidal parameter at the threshold (Λth), maximum mass of nonrotating NSs, and radii of reference mass NSs. We combine the EOS-insensitive relations, phenomenological constraints on NS properties, and observational data from GW170817 to derive an improved lower limit on radii of maximum mass and a 1.6 M ⊙ NS of 9.81 and 10.90 km, respectively. We also constrain the radius and quadrupolar tidal deformability (Λ) of a 1.4 M ⊙ NS to be larger than 10.74 km and 172, respectively. We consider uncertainties in all independent parameters—fitting coefficients as well as GW170817 masses while reporting the range of radii constraints. We discuss an approach to constrain the upper as well as lower limit of NS maximum mass using future binary NS detections and their identification as prompt or delayed collapse. With future observations, it will be possible to derive even tighter constraints on the properties of matter at and above nuclear density using the method proposed in this work.

Accurate effective fluid approximation for ultralight axions

Ultralight axions are theoretically interesting and phenomenologically rich dark sector candidates, but they are difficult to track across cosmological timescales because of their fast oscillations. We resolve this problem by developing a novel method to evolve them efficiently and accurately. We first construct an exact effective fluid which at late times matches the axion but which evolves in a simple way. We then approximate this evolution with a carefully chosen equation of state and sound speed. With our scheme we find that we can obtain subpercent accuracy for the linear theory suppression of axion density fluctuations relative to that of cold dark matter without tracking even a single complete oscillation of the axion field. Furthermore, we use our technique to test other approximation schemes and to provide a fitting formula for the transfer function for the matter power spectrum in linear theory in axion models. Implementing our approach in existing cosmological axion codes is straightforward and will help unleash the potential of high-precision next-generation experiments.

Handing off the outcome of binary neutron star mergers for accurate and long-term postmerger simulations

In this work, we perform binary neutron star (BNS) merger simulations in full dynamical general relativity with IllinoisGRMHD, on a Cartesian grid with adaptive-mesh refinement. After the remnant black hole has become nearly stationary, the evolution of the surrounding accretion disk on Cartesian grids over long timescales (~1s) is suboptimal, as Cartesian coordinates over-resolve the angular coordinates at large distances, and the accreting plasma flows obliquely across coordinate lines dissipating angular momentum artificially from the disk. To address this, we present the HandOff, a set of computational tools that enables the transfer of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) and spacetime data from IllinoisGRMHD to harm3d, a GRMHD code that specializes in modeling black hole accretion disks in static spacetimes over long timescales, making use of general coordinate systems with spherical topology. We demonstrate that the handoff allows for a smooth and reliable transition of GRMHD fields and spacetime data, enabling us to efficiently and reliably evolve BNS dynamics well beyond merger. We also discuss future plans, which involve incorporating advanced equations of state and neutrino physics into BNS simulations using the HandOff approach.

Critical lensing and kurtosis near a critical point in the QCD phase diagram in and out of equilibrium

In this work, we study the lensing effect of the QCD critical point on hydrodynamic trajectories and its consequences on the net-proton kurtosis $\kappa$ 4 . Including critical behavior by means of the BEST Collaboration equation of state (EoS), we first consider a scenario in equilibrium, then compare with hydrodynamic 0+1⁢D simulations with Bjorken expansion, including both shear and bulk viscous terms. Here, we find that, both in and out of equilibrium, the size and shape of the critical region directly affect if the signal will survive through the dynamical evolution.

Dark energy with a triplet of classical U(1) fields

Here, we present a new mechanism for cosmic acceleration consisting of a scalar field coupled to a triplet of classical U(1) gauge fields. The gauge fields are arranged in a homogeneous, isotropic configuration, with both electric- and magneticlike vacuum expectation values. The gauge fields provide a masslike term via a Chern-Simons interaction that suspends the scalar away from its potential minimum, thereby enabling potential-dominated evolution. We show this mechanism can drive a brief period of acceleration, such as dark energy, without the need for fine-tunings. We obtain simple analytic results for the dark energy equation of state and dependence on model parameters. In this model, the presence of the gauge field generically leads to a suppression of long-wavelength gravitational waves, with implications for the experimental search for cosmic microwave background B modes and direct detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background.

Two first-order phase transitions in hybrid compact stars: Higher-order multiplet stars, reaction modes, and intermediate conversion speeds

We study compact stars with hybrid equations of state consisting of a nuclear outer region and two nested quark phases, each separated from the lower density phase by a strong first-order phase transition. The stability of these models is determined by calculating their radial oscillation modes with different conversion rates between adjacent phases and hence junction conditions for the modes at the phase separation interface between them. In the case when the timescale of transition is faster than the period of oscillations, we recover the traditional stability criterion implying that ∂M/∂ρ c > 0 on the stable branch(es), where M is the mass and ρ c is the central density. In the opposite limit of slow conversion, we find stable stellar multiplets beyond triplets consisting of stars that are stable by the usual criterion plus slow-conversion (denoted by s) hybrid stars with ∂M/∂ρ c < 0 that are stabilized due to an alternative junction condition on the fluid displacement field at the interface reflecting the slow rate of conversion. We also study the properties of the reaction mode, the radial mode that only exists for stars with rapid (abbreviated by r) phase transitions, in stars with either two rapid phase transitions or alternating rapid and slow phase transitions for the first time. Here, the implications of alternative junction conditions are also examined, with these conditions generally being found to provide stability properties similar to those for a slow conversion rate.
