Evaluating the Thickness and Stratigraphy of Ejecta Materials at the Chang’e-4 Landing Site

The landing site of China’s Chang’e-4 (CE-4) probe is located on the mare basalts on the floor of the Von Kármán crater on the lunar far side. The Von Kármán crater is inside the ancient and highly cratered South Pole–Aitken basin, which has experienced complex emplacement sequences of both near and distant ejecta materials. These issues complicated the interpretation of the CE-4 surface in situ measurements of the visible and near-infrared spectrometer and the lunar penetrating radar (LPR) onboard Yutu-2 rover. To evaluate the sources and amounts of all principle foreign materials at the CE-4 landing site, we thoroughly examine the ejecta delivered by crater-forming events that occurred later than the formation of the mare basalts at the CE-4 landing site. We found a total of 16 craters that may have delivered ejecta thicker than 10 cm level superposed on the mare basalts at the CE-4 landing site. Crater Finsen, Von Kármán L, Von Kármán L′, and Maksutov are the top four major foreign material sources, and each of them contributed ejecta thicker than 1 m. Our surveys confirm that the ejecta from Finsen crater are the most dominant foreign materials in the uppermost few meters at the CE-4 landing site and the total impact ejecta deposited upon the mare basalts at the landing site is estimated to be thinner than 30 m. We found that the estimations from Pike’s model are the most consistent with the Yutu-2 LPR observations.

Resolving the Circumstellar Environment of the Galactic B[e] Supergiant Star MWC 137.II. Nebular Kinematics and Stellar Variability

The Galactic B[e] supergiant MWC 137 is surrounded by a large-scale optical nebula. To shed light on the physical conditions and kinematics of the nebula, we analyze the optical forbidden emission lines [N ii] λ λ 6548,6583 and [S ii] λ λ 6716,6731 in long-slit spectra taken with ALFOSC at the Nordic Optical Telescope. The radial velocities display a complex behavior but, in general, the northern nebular features are predominantly approaching while the southern ones are mostly receding. The electron density shows strong variations across the nebula with values spreading from about zero to ~800 cm{sup -3}. Higher densities are found closer to MWC 137 and in regions of intense emission, whereas in regions with high radial velocities the density decreases significantly. We also observe the entire nebula in the two [S ii] lines with the scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer attached to the 6 m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. These data reveal a new bow-shaped feature at P.A. = 225°–245° and a distance 80" from MWC 137. A new Hα image has been taken with the Danish 1.54 m telescope on La Silla. No expansion or changes in the nebular morphology appear within 18.1 yr. We derive a mass of 37{sub -5}{sup +9} M{sub ⊙} and an age of 4.7 ± 0.8 Myr for MWC 137. Furthermore, we detect a period of 1.93 d in the time series photometry collected with the TESS satellite, which could suggest stellar pulsations. Other, low-frequency variability is seen as well. Whether these signals are caused by internal gravity waves in the early-type star or by variability in the wind and circumstellar matter currently cannot be distinguished.

A Measurement of the Largest-scale CMB E -mode Polarization with CLASS

We present measurements of large-scale cosmic microwave background E-mode polarization from the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor 90 GHz data. Using 115 det-yr of observations collected through 2024 with a variable-delay polarization modulator, we achieved a polarization sensitivity of 82 μK arcimin, comparable to Planck at similar frequencies (100 and 143 GHz ). The analysis demonstrates effective mitigation of systematic errors and addresses challenges to large-angular-scale power recovery posed by time-domain filtering in maximum-likelihood map-making. A novel implementation of the pixel-space transfer matrix is introduced, which enables efficient filtering simulations and bias correction in the power spectrum using the quadratic cross-spectrum estimator. Overall, we achieved an unbiased time-domain filtering correction to recover the largest angular scale polarization, with the only power deficit, arising from map-making nonlinearity, being characterized as <3%. Through cross-correlation with Planck, we detected the cosmic reionization at 99.4% significance and measured the reionization optical depth τ = $0.053^{+0.018}_{-0.019}$, marking the first ground-based attempt at such a measurement. At intermediate angular scales (ℓ > 30), our results, both independently and in cross-correlation with Planck, remain fully consistent with Planck’s measurements.

The works of k. e. tsiolkovskiy on rocket technology

K. E. Tsiolkovskiy devoted a rather substantial portion of his works to the problem of flight by means of various reactive devices. We may state without exaggeration that Tsiolkovskiy considered his efforts in this direction to be of prime importance. Up to the time of his death Tsiolkovskiy continuously published articles; notes_ and calculations devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the possibilities and methods of interplanetary communications.
