Evaluation of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor Operation Data for Critical Benchmark Creation [Slides]

During the evaluation of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor operation data for critical benchmark creation, a detailed, functional SCALE model was built, and experimental data was evaluated for the creation of a critical benchmark. The estimated experimental uncertainty is about 3800 pcm, which is considered very high. The relative difference between expected and calculated keff values is about 1.5 %, also considered very high. It was concluded that a good quality critical benchmark worthy of the ICSBEP standards cannot be created from HPRR data in the present conditions. Locating the HPRR fuel to obtain an uncertainty on the density would aid in solving this issue.

Plans for Expanded Data Testing at ORNL [Slides]

VALID expansion is on-going and should provide coverage over a wider range of systems in the future. Adding additional application types beyond critical experiments can also be used in expanded data testing. Two other test suites have been developed at ORNL for other purposes, but never waste a good test suite. These suites are more likely to be relevant to testing differences in data as compared to assessing accuracy of evaluations.

Developing a Continuous Nuclear Data Evaluation Method for the Resolved and Unresolved Resonance Regions With FITAPI and SAMMY [Poster]

SAMMY is an R-matrix Bayesian fitting program used in the analysis of nuclear cross section data. SAMMY produces separate cross section models in the resolved and unresolved resonance regions. This project develops a new method of continuous evaluation joining both energy regions with FITAPI. Full energy spectrum model introduces cross covariance between physics models allowing more accurate description of uncertainty. Consistency developed between physics models by the use of a unique set of prior parameters. An unresolved region cross section developed with sensitivity to resolved cross section. Incorporation into ORNL FITAPI provides access to greater number of parameter estimation algorithms.

Experiments for SINBAD: Evaluation of Oak Ridge Health Physics Research Reactor Operation Data for CAAS Benchmark Creation [Slides]

This report was a real information preservation and dissemination work with a lot of legacy content that was found and used. There was an abundance of uncertainty, discrepancy, and contradictory information. Yet, a detailed, functional SCALE model was built, and the benchmark created is useful for shielding and CAAs validation work. Sulfur fluence C/E ratios are large (2 to 5), so different benchmark metrics were studied. Neutron fluence, element 57 dose, and other dosimetry responses at 3 meters C/E ratios are below 1.5 for bare and steel configurations. Additional promising metrics as dose per unit fluence and steel shield attenuation were computed.

Advanced Modeling and Simulations for Evaluation of Thermal Neutron Scattering Materials [Slides]

In this presentation, researchers detail tradeoffs between two simulation suites for thermal neutron scattering data. OXLIMAX + MCViNE provide a more accurate elastic peak shape and NJOY + MCNP have more accurate spectra between phonon mode peaks (most likely due to multiple neutron scattering). Additionally, some outstanding issues with MCViNE are noted, including multiple neutron scattering and non-uniform (Q,E) grid for data.

140,142 Ce Neutron Cross Section Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation [Slides]

ORNL has completed new RRR evaluations for 140,142 Ce. A lack of integral measurements made validation difficult, but the difference from Kadonis values suggests that more investigation of capture cross section is warranted. The complete file (with updated File2 and File32) has been submitted to NNDC repository for inclusion in next release of ENDF. A sponsor report publication is in progress.

Thermal Cross Section Measurements At The RPI LINAC [Slides]

This presentation gives an overview of thermal cross section measurements at the RPI LINAC. Work discussed includes novel cold moderator capability for use in extending neutron flux down to 0.0005 eV and total thermal neutron cross section measurements performed for polyethylene, polystyrene, Plexiglas (Lucite), and yttrium hydride over the entire thermal region (0.0005 – 1 eV).

A Subcritical Assembly for Training and Education Use at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory [Slides]

Sufficient AGN-201M fuel plate material exists at Y-12 to support the development of a new, inherently safe, subcritical assembly for use in NCS training courses at ORNL. Four experiments with the ORNL subcritical assembly are possible and feasible. Future work includes the final design of the core and reflector and split table component design specifications. The ORNL Material Demonstration Facility (MDF) may be used to 3D print ORSA stand/table components and graphite reflector. Researchers will consider fuel coatings for contamination control, rather than an Al can. A visit to Y-12 will be made to determine the location of AGN fuel plates and remaining fuel transportation considerations. Final facility location will be considered

Phenomenological R-Matrix parameterization of direct, doorway, and compound nuclear reactions [Slides]

The presented R-matrix formalism could improve evaluations of resolved resonance nuclear cross section data by parameterizing direct reaction processes via an orthonormal channel mixing matrix and doorway state processes. Together, they can parameterize direct-semidirect capture. A formal similarity among the R-, K-, T- matrix formalisms was leveraged to parameterize direct and doorway processes. The advantage of this R-matrix parameterization is that it is easily extensible due to its application of projection operators directly upon the (H-E) on p. 6.
