Efficient and tunable blue light generation using lithium niobate nonlinear photonics

Thin-film lithium niobate (LN) has recently emerged as a playground for chip-scale nonlinear optics and leads to efficient frequency conversions from near-infrared to near-visible bands. For many nonlinear and quantum photonics applications, it is desirable to operate deep into the visible band within LN's transparency window. However, the strong material dispersion at short wavelengths makes phase-matching difficult, necessitating sub-micrometer scale control of domain structures for efficient phase-matching. Here, we report the operation of thin film LN in the blue wavelength and high fidelity poling of the thin-film LN waveguide to this regime. As a result, quasi-phase matching is realized between IR (871 nm) and blue (435.5 nm) wavelengths in a straight waveguide and prompts strong blue light generation with a conversion efficiency (1040% ± 140%/W). This blue second harmonic generator exhibits stable temperature tunability, which is important for applications that require precise frequency alignment, such as atomic clocks.

Three-Qubit Encoding in Ytterbium-171 Atoms for Simulating 1+1D Quantum Chromodynamics

Simulating nuclear matter described by quantum chromodynamics using quantum computers is notoriously inefficient because of the assortment of quark degrees of freedom such as matter/antimatter, flavor, color, and spin. Here, we propose to address this resource efficiency challenge by encoding three qubits within individual ytterbium-171 atoms of a neutral atom quantum processor. The three qubits are encoded in three distinct sectors: an electronic “clock” transition, the spin-1/2 nucleus, and the lowest two motional states in one radial direction of the harmonic trapping potential. We develop a family of composite sideband pulses and demonstrate a universal gate set and readout protocol for this three-qubit system. We then apply it to single-flavor quantum chromodynamics in 1+1D axial gauge for which the three qubits directly represent the occupancy of quarks in the three colors. We show that two atoms are sufficient to simulate both vacuum persistence oscillations and a screened hadron-number transition. We consider resource requirements and connections to error detection/correction. Our work is a step toward resource-efficient digital simulation of nuclear matter and opens new opportunities for versatile qubit encoding in neutral atom quantum processors.

Engineered Production of Hydroxycinnamoyl Tyramine Conjugates Limits the Growth of the Pathogen Pseudomonas syringae in Arabidopsis

Hydroxycinnamoyl tyramine conjugates are phenolamides produced by plants in response to pathogen attack and biotic stresses. Their proposed mechanisms of action include cytotoxicity towards pathogens, cell wall reinforcement to restrict pathogen proliferation, and signaling activity to trigger general stress responses. Here, we engineered the production of the tyramine conjugates p-coumaroyltyramine (CT) and feruloyltyramine (FT) in Arabidopsis to gain insight into their mode of action. Co-expression of feedback-insensitive 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase and tyrosine decarboxylase increased tyramine content. Additional expression of tyramine hydroxycinnamoyltransferase led to de-novo production of CT and FT, which were found as soluble and cell-wall-bound forms. FT was associated with lignin in stems. The growth of pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae was reduced in rosettes of the Arabidopsis CT- and FT-producing lines compared to wild type. These lines also exhibited increased transpirational water loss in excised rosettes. Transcriptomic analysis of transgenic lines grown under normal conditions revealed alterations in the expression of genes associated with the biological circadian clock. These changes led to a reduction in flavonoids and an early flowering phenotype. Important changes in the expression of genes related to abiotic stress such as drought, cold, heat, and hypoxia potentially contribute to reduced growth of P. syringae in engineered Arabidopsis.

Demonstration of Long Vacuum Integrity Lifetime of Trapped Ion Standard Package

A compact Hg ion trap package that was vacuum-sealed since 9 years has been demonstrated to be successfully operational showing excellent ion-trap lifetime exceeding 400 days. In addition to the vacuum package, the same 9-year old optical and detection packages are utilized to obtain these results. Charge transfer relaxation effects between neutral Hg and trapped Hg ion are studied. This work shows the reliability of such units in view of next-generation ground and space-borne trapped ion clocks.

Thiol redox switches regulate the oligomeric state of cyanobacterial Rre1, RpaA and RpaB response regulators

Cyanobacteria employ two‐component sensor‐response regulator systems to monitor and respond to environmental challenges. The response regulators RpaA, RpaB, Rre1 and RppA are integral to circadian clock function and abiotic stress acclimation in cyanobacteria. RpaA, RpaB and Rre1 are known to interact with ferredoxin or thioredoxin, raising the possibility of their thiol regulation. Here, we report that Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 Rre1, RpaA and RpaB exist as higher‐order oligomers under oxidising conditions and that reduced thioredoxin A converts them to monomers. We further show that these response regulators contain redox‐responsive cysteine residues with an E m7 around −300 mV. These findings suggest a direct thiol modulation of the activity of these response regulators, independent of their cognate sensor kinases.
