An Open-Access Repository of Synchrophasor Data Quality Examples: Curation and Example Applications

Synchrophasor measurements are critical in providing wide-area situational awareness to power system operators. However, data artifacts may be introduced due to various issues such as loss of communication, loss of GPS signal, internal clock error, and vendor-specific implementation of phasor estimation algorithms. Tools designed to provide actionable insights from synchrophasor data, hence, must be designed to be robust to these data quality issues. In this work, two years of synchrophasor data sourced from multiple electric utilities in the United States were analyzed to identify examples of data quality problems. These examples were then labeled and published in the Grid Event Signature Library, a publicly available repository of power system measurements hosted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This paper describes the data curation process, and illustrates two application use cases where the dataset can be valuable to the research community. In the first use case, a random forest classifier is trained to distinguish power system disturbance signatures from data anomalies introduced in synchrophasor measurements due to clock errors. The second use case studies the impact of data quality issues on an example synchrophasor application (specifically, event start time determination). The choice of data quality problems investigated is informed by the examples in the repository curated in this work.

UnifyFS: A User-level Shared File System for Unified Access to Distributed Local Storage

We introduce UnifyFS, a user-level file system that aggregates node-local storage tiers available on high performance computing (HPC) systems and makes them available to HPC applications under a unified namespace. UnifyFS employs transparent I/O interception, so it does not require changes to application code and is compatible with commonly used HPC I/O libraries. The design of UnifyFS supports the predominant HPC I/O workloads and is optimized for bulk-synchronous I/O patterns. Furthermore, UnifyFS provides customizable file system semantics to flexibly adapt its behavior for diverse I/O workloads and storage devices. In this paper, we discuss the unique design goals and architecture of UnifyFS and evaluate its performance on a leadership-class HPC system. In our experimental results, we demonstrate that UnifyFS exhibits excellent scaling performance for write operations and can improve the performance of application checkpoint operations by as much as 3× versus a tuned configuration.

Accessing pluripotent materials through tempering of dynamic covalent polymer networks

Pluripotency, which is defined as a system not fixed as to its developmental potentialities, is typically associated with biology and stem cells. Here, inspired by this concept, we report synthetic polymers that act as a single “pluripotent” feedstock and can be differentiated into a range of materials that exhibit different mechanical properties, from hard and brittle to soft and extensible. To achieve this, we have exploited dynamic covalent networks that contain labile, dynamic thia-Michael bonds, whose extent of bonding can be thermally modulated and retained through tempering, akin to the process used in metallurgy. In addition, we show that the shape memory behavior of these materials can be tailored through tempering and that these materials can be patterned to spatially control mechanical properties.

Accessing tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds nuclear state lifetimes with low-energy binary heavy-ion reactions

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened γ-ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the 18 O(7.0MeV/u)+ 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in 17 O and 19 O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the ~20-400fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by γ-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Access Capabilities Through Ccs Communications Protocol (acccs)

AcCCS is a collection of scripts that leverage open-source code, off-the-shelf hardware, and published protocol specifications to create a flexible and inexpensive test and evaluation device for the Electric Vehicle industry. AcCCS is capable of emulating either an Electric Vehicle (EV) or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). It provides a flexible set of Python scripts to test and evaluate the various communication protocols between the Electric Vehicle Communication Controller (EVCC) and Supply Equipment Communication Controller (SECC). This capability is useful for cybersecurity researchers, automotive OEMs, and EVSE manufactures.

Solid particulate mass and number from ducted fuel injection in an optically accessible diesel engine in skip-fired operation

Ducted fuel injection (DFI) is a new combustion strategy that has been shown to significantly attenuate soot formation in diesel engines. While previous studies have used optical diagnostics and optical filter smoke number methods to show that DFI reduces in-cylinder soot formation and engine-out soot emissions, respectively, this is the first study to measure solid particle number (PN) emissions in addition to particle mass (PM). Furthermore, this study quantitatively evaluates the use of transient particle instruments for measuring particles from skip-fired operation in an optical single cylinder research engine (SCRE). Engine-out PN was measured using an engine exhaust particle sizer following a catalytic stripper, and PM was measured using a photoacoustic analyzer. The study improves on earlier preliminary emissions studies by clearly showing that DFI reduces overall PM by 76%–79% and PN for particles larger than 23 nm by 77% relative to conventional diesel combustion at a 1200-rpm, 13.3-bar gross indicated mean effective pressure operating condition. The degree of engine-out PM reduction with DFI was similar across both particulate measurement instruments used in the work. Through the use of bimodal distribution fitting, DFI was also shown to reduce the geometric mean diameter of accumulation mode particles by 26%, similar to the effects of increased injection pressure in conventional diesel combustion systems. This work clearly shows the significant solid particulate matter reductions enabled by DFI while also demonstrating that engine-out PN can be accurately measured from an optical SCRE operating in a skip-fired mode. Based on these results, it is believed that DFI has the potential to enable fuel savings when implemented in multi-cylinder engines, both by lowering the required frequency of active diesel particulate filter regeneration, and by reducing the backpressure imposed by exhaust filtration systems.
