Updated neutrino mass constraints from galaxy clustering and CMB lensing-galaxy cross-correlation measurements

In this work, we revisit cosmological constraints on the sum of the neutrino masses Σm v from a combination of full-shape BOSS galaxy clustering [P(k)] data and measurements of the cross-correlation between Planck Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing convergence and BOSS galaxy overdensity maps [$C_{l}^{kg}$], using a simple but theoretically motivated model for the scale-dependent galaxy bias in auto- and cross-correlation measurements. We improve upon earlier related work in several respects, particularly through a more accurate treatment of the correlation and covariance between P(k) and $C_{l}^{kg}$ measurements. When combining these measurements with Planck CMB data, we find a 95% confidence level upper limit of Σm v sum of neutrino masses < 0.14 eV, while slightly weaker limits are obtained when including small-scale ACTPol CMB data, in agreement with our expectations. We confirm earlier findings that (once combined with CMB data) the full-shape information content is comparable to the geometrical information content in the reconstructed BAO peaks given the precision of current galaxy clustering data, discuss the physical significance of our inferred bias and shot noise parameters, and perform a number of robustness tests on our underlying model. While the inclusion of $C_{l}^{kg}$ measurements does not currently appear to lead to substantial improvements in the resulting Σm v of neutrino mass constraints, we expect the converse to be true for near-future galaxy clustering measurements, whose shape information content will eventually supersede the geometrical one.

$\mathrm{UPDATED}$ $\mathrm{U3SI2}$ thermal creep model and sensitivity analysis of the $\mathrm{U3SI2-SIC}$ accident tolerant $\mathrm{FUEL}$

U 3 Si 2 is a candidate accident tolerant fuel (ATF) replacement for UO 2 . U 3 Si 2 ’s high uranium density and high thermal conductivity are favorable properties in steady-state and accident conditions. Low power performance of this U3Si2-SiC concept fuel is compared to that of UO 2 -Zr4 fuels by implementing models that describe the properties of U 3 Si 2 and SiC-SiC into Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) fuel performance code, BISON. Included in these material models is a thermal creep model for U 3 Si 2 based on compressive creep data. The simulated results are in keeping with community knowledge that the U 3 Si 2 -SiC concept fuel may serve as a replacement for UO 2 -Zr4 fuels during steady-state operation, provided the mSiC layer remains under compression. Through a moderate power history and three 24-month fuel cycles, the mSiC layer remains under compressive stress through a burnup of 80 MWd/kgU. During low power operation, failure of the mSiC layer generally occurs prior to significant thermal creep in U 3 Si 2 . Generally, U 3 Si 2 creep is temperature sensitive and of little importance at the temperatures and stresses simulated during steady operation and during fuel-to-cladding contact. A parameter variation study including 11,520 individual simulations with variations in nominal fuel thermal creep rate, cladding thermal conductivity, cladding irradiation creep and swelling, cladding gap size, and cladding thickness demonstrated that research priorities for this ATF should revolve around reducing cladding thickness as a means to minimize cladding failure. Generally, despite advances in SiC-SiC compliance, the brittle nature of mSiC excludes U 3 Si 2 -SiC for use where fuel cladding contact may occur.

phosaa14SB and phosaa19SB: Updated Amber Force Field Parameters for Phosphorylated Amino Acids

Phosphorylated amino acids are involved in many cell regulatory networks; proteins containing these post-translational modifications are widely studied both experimentally and computationally. Simulations are used to investigate a wide range of structural and dynamic properties of biomolecules, such as ligand binding, enzyme-reaction mechanisms, and protein folding. However, the development of force field parameters for the simulation of proteins containing phosphorylated amino acids using the Amber program has not kept pace with the development of parameters for standard amino acids, and it is challenging to model these modified amino acids with accuracy comparable to proteins containing only standard amino acids. In particular, the popular ff14SB and ff19SB models do not contain parameters for phosphorylated amino acids. Here, the dihedral parameters for the side chains of the most common phosphorylated amino acids are trained against reference data from QM calculations adopting the ff14SB approach, followed by validation against experimental data. Finally, library files and corresponding parameter files are provided, with versions that are compatible with both ff14SB and ff19SB.

Message in a Bottle—An Update to the Golden Record: 1. Objectives and Key Content of the Message

In the first part of this series, we delve into the foundational aspects of “Message in a Bottle (MIAB)” (henceforth referred to as MIAB). This study builds upon the legacy of the Voyager Golden Records, launched aboard Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977, which aimed to communicate with intelligent species beyond our world. These records not only offer a snapshot of Earth and human civilization but also represent our desire to establish contact with advanced alien civilizations. Given the absence of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic conventions, MIAB, like its predecessor, uses scientific methods to design an innovative means of communication that encapsulates the story of humanity. Our goal is to share our collective knowledge, emotions, innovations, and aspirations in a way that provides a universal, yet contextually relevant, understanding of human society, the evolution of life on Earth, and our hopes and concerns for the future. Through this time and space traveling capsule, we also strive to inspire and unify current and future generations to celebrate and safeguard our shared human experience.

An updated nuclear-physics and multi-messenger astrophysics framework for binary neutron star mergers

The multi-messenger detection of the gravitational-wave signal GW170817, the corresponding kilonova AT2017gfo and the short gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, as well as the observed afterglow has delivered a scientific breakthrough. For an accurate interpretation of all these different messengers, one requires robust theoretical models that describe the emitted gravitational-wave, the electromagnetic emission, and dense matter reliably. In addition, one needs efficient and accurate computational tools to ensure a correct cross-correlation between the models and the observational data. For this purpose, we have developed the Nuclear-physics and Multi-Messenger Astrophysics framework NMMA. The code allows incorporation of nuclear-physics constraints at low densities as well as X-ray and radio observations of isolated neutron stars. In previous works, the NMMA code has allowed us to constrain the equation of state of supranuclear dense matter, to measure the Hubble constant, and to compare dense-matter physics probed in neutron-star mergers and in heavy-ion collisions, and to classify electromagnetic observations and perform model selection. Here, we show an extension of the NMMA code as a first attempt of analyzing the gravitational-wave signal, the kilonova, and the gamma-ray burst afterglow simultaneously. Incorporating all available information, we estimate the radius of a 1.4M ⊙ neutron star to be $R$ $=$ $11.98^{+0.35}_{-0.04}$ km.

High-resolution national mapping of natural gas composition substantially updates methane leakage impacts

Methane is emitted from oil and gas operations alongside heavier hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbon gases, shaping emissions management decision-making, including air quality impacts. Yet, most assessments assume fixed gas composition, overlooking significant spatial and temporal variations. Here, we generate a high-resolution, data-driven map of natural gas composition across the United States, reconstructing methane, heavier hydrocarbons, and non-hydrocarbon species using spatio-temporal interpolation and oil-and-gas production patterns. Our approach is able to reduce composition prediction errors by 39% in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE) compared to standard techniques and reveals that methane loss rates have been underestimated by more than 50% in some regions. Beyond methane, we uncover substantial variability in co-emitted gases, exposing blind spots in current emissions inventories and emissions management frameworks. Our work enables more accurate emissions assessments, guides targeted measurement strategies, and informs emissions management decision-making. It also provides a general framework for prediction in environmental applications that integrate sparse measurements with auxiliary variables.

Adaptive hyperparameter updating for training restricted Boltzmann machines on quantum annealers

Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) have been proposed for developing neural networks for a variety of unsupervised machine learning applications such as image recognition, drug discovery, and materials design. The Boltzmann probability distribution is used as a model to identify network parameters by optimizing the likelihood of predicting an output given hidden states trained on available data. Training such networks often requires sampling over a large probability space that must be approximated during gradient based optimization. Quantum annealing has been proposed as a means to search this space more efficiently which has been experimentally investigated on D-Wave hardware. D-Wave implementation requires selection of an effective inverse temperature or hyperparameter (β) within the Boltzmann distribution which can strongly influence optimization. Here, we show how this parameter can be estimated as a hyperparameter applied to D-Wave hardware during neural network training by maximizing the likelihood or minimizing the Shannon entropy. We find both methods improve training RBMs based upon D-Wave hardware experimental validation on an image recognition problem. Neural network image reconstruction errors are evaluated using Bayesian uncertainty analysis which illustrate more than an order magnitude lower image reconstruction error using the maximum likelihood over manually optimizing the hyperparameter. The maximum likelihood method is also shown to out-perform minimizing the Shannon entropy for image reconstruction.

Galactic ArchaeoLogIcaL ExcavatiOns (GALILEO): I. An updated census of APOGEE N-rich giants across the Milky Way

We use the 17th data release of the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) to provide a homogenous census of N-rich red giant stars across the Milky Way (MW). We report a total of 149 newly identified N-rich field giants toward the bulge, metal-poor disk, and halo of our Galaxy. They exhibit significant enrichment in their nitrogen abundance ratios ([N/Fe] ≳ +0.5), along with simultaneous depletions in their [C/Fe] abundance ratios ([C/Fe] < +0.15), and they cover a wide range of metallicities (-1.8 < [Fe/H] < -0.7). The final sample of candidate N-rich red giant stars with globular-cluster-like (GC-like) abundance patterns from the APOGEE survey includes a grand total of ~412 unique objects. These strongly N-enhanced stars are speculated to have been stripped from GCs based on their chemical similarities with these systems. Even though we have not found any strong evidence for binary companions or signatures of pulsating variability yet, we cannot rule out the possibility that some of these objects were members of binary systems in the past and/or are currently part of a variable system. In particular, the fact that we identify such stars among the field stars in our Galaxy provides strong evidence that the nucleosynthetic process(es) producing the anomalous [N/Fe] abundance ratios occurs over a wide range of metallicities. This may provide evidence either for or against the uniqueness of the progenitor stars to GCs and/or the existence of chemical anomalies associated with likely tidally shredded clusters in massive dwarf galaxies such as “Kraken/Koala”, Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, among others, before or during their accretion by the MW. In conclusion, a dynamical analysis reveals that the newly identified N-rich stars exhibit a wide range of dynamical characteristics throughout the MW, indicating that they were produced in a variety of Galactic environments.
