Uses of Sensitivity/Uncertainty Techniques for Critical Experiment Design [Slides]

This presentation discusses the programming languages TSUNAMI and TSAR. It also provides a review of experimental designs using sensitivity analysis in regard to 7uPCX fuel design, fission product experiment analysis, MIRTE, and temperature dependent experiments at the Sandia Pulsed Reactor Facility (SPRF).

Reproducibility and Optimization Techniques for Evaluated Data in the Resolved Resonance Region [Slides]

This presentation discusses the experimental setup input parameters that are basic quantities for reproducibility. The goal is to increase quality of the evaluated data and decrease time needed for an evaluation. Full reproducibility should be achieved efficiently by including any type of constraints in the optimization procedure and to improve computational time to reach convergence. The goal of an automated reproducibility aligns to the goal of “certified” evaluated data, i.e., defined by a well-defined metric.

Extension of Cable Electrical Assessment Techniques to Detect and Discriminate Radiation Aging on Cable Insulation Systems (Abstract)

The purpose of this study of the electrical responses of gamma radiation aged low voltage nuclear cables is to advance tools to determine cable condition (extent of damage) and identify degradation location along the cable length. The developed technology will provide nuclear plant operators with the options to focus cable repair, mitigation, or replacement efforts locally and avoid wholesale cable replacement.

Demonstration of the Human and Technology Integration Guidance for the Design of Plant-Specific Advanced Automation and Data Visualization Techniques

Nuclear power continues to be a safe, reliable, and carbon-free electricity generating source for the United States, though the cost of operating and maintaining the current United States nuclear power plant fleet has become uncompetitive with other sources. This gap is attributed to the advent of new digital instrumentation and control technologies that other electricity generating industries are currently leveraging to streamline work and greatly reduce operating, maintenance, and support costs. Digital instrumentation and control systems and control room modernization offers significant opportunities to reduce operating and maintenance costs to ensure the continued operation of the existing United States light-water reactors.

UNESE Argon-39 Measurement Techniques: Developing an above-ground Argon-39 Measurement Capability

The Underground Nuclear Explosion Signatures Experiment (UNESE) sought to use 37 Ar as a tracer for measuring noble-gas migration in the soil surrounding historic Underground Nuclear Explosions (UNE). One unexpected observation was the presence of the much longer-lived isotope 39 Ar from historic UNEs. Quantifying the activity of 39 Ar proved difficult due to the lack of capability to measure significantly-above-background levels of 39 Ar and a general discomfort to repeatedly expose Ultra-Low-Background Proportional Counters (ULBPCs) to significant radioactivity. Because the whole-air samples collected for the 37 Ar tracer measurement were already being measured on the above-ground argon capability, it was decided to expand that capability to include 39 Ar. This document describes the efforts required to achieve quantitative reporting of the 39 Ar backgrounds measured during experiments at the sites of the historic Barnwell and Disko Elm UNEs.

Design Improvements in Liquid Argon Purification Techniques in DUNE Cold Electronics Test Cryostat (Iceberg)

A proposed design improvement for the removal of electronegative impurities from liquid argon for the purpose of neutrino detector research is described. The design will utilize a commercially available submersible pump to circulate liquid argon through an external filter containing molecular sieve and activated copper media, removing water and oxygen, respectively. The existing state-of-the-art filter design provides a throughput of 0.5 L/min, while the capacity of the submersible pump design is at least 4 L/min, though could be even higher depending on total losses within the filtration piping assembly. An additional benefit of the new design will be the ability to regenerate the filter media in situ without stopping the experimental testing. The following work will describe the design, operation, and expected performance using CFD analysis.

Geopolymer Cements: Resistance-Engineered Sewer Infrastructure for Longevity using Innovative, Energy-efficient, Synthesis Techniques (RESILIENT)

The primary objective of this project was to engineer an ultra-acid-resistant low-calcium alkali-activated cement paste for wastewater infrastructure applications to address the critical need for concrete materials with enhanced sulfuric acid resistance compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete. In this project, the first milestone was to benchmark the sulfuric acid (SA) resistance of OPC and metakaolin-based geopolymer cement pastes. The second milestone was to model, select, and evaluate the efficacy of metal cation additions on the SA resistance of geopolymer cements. The third milestone was to create synthetic metakaolin that performed similarly to natural metakaolin. The fourth milestone was to design, build, and test the efficacy of four abiotic and biotic nano seeding agents. The fifth and final milestone was to quantify the breakeven material cost requirements and estimated environmental lifecycle costs of the most durable geopolymer cement formulations.
