Symbol synchronizer assembly instability study, part 2

Data processing to develop a third-order phase model and to translate all such processed data to the frequency realm for further analysis was described. The frequency study yields a long frequency modulation (FM) drift sinusoid (1600-sec period), an impressed secondary drift wave with a period of about 116 sec, and a set of even harmonics of twice the ramp period-the latter arising from, and used to modify, the phase detector model. The result is applied secondarily to estimate the strong-signal SSA phase detector response "out-of-lock." Finally, the main drift components are verified against all available data, and the result is used to estimate minimum lock conditions and the SSA drift effect under normal operating modes. The instability problem appears marginally resolvable if the acquisition technique is modified.

A relationship between synchronous-altitude electron fluxes and the auroral electrojet, appendix A

Simultaneous observations during four substorms are reported from the Lockheed auroral particle spectrometer on ATS-5 and the University of Alberta meridian magnetometer chain (Canada). During the four events studied, there was a good correlation between the magnitude of the trapped electron fluxes in the energy range from 1.8 to 53 keV and the magnitude of the electrojet current as measured by a station in the magnetometer chain at a latitude close to that expected for the ATS conjugate point. The Hall effect was studied and a model electrojet was constructed which gave a good absolute agreement between the two measured quantities. The results are consistent with the convection electric field remaining approximately constant during a substantial portion of each of the substorms studied. The temporal variations of the electrojet were apparently controlled by conductivity changes in the ionosphere as determined by the precipitating auroral electrons.

Elementary theory of synchronous arterio-arterial blood pumps

In the technique of arterio-arterial pumping, a volume of fluid is withdrawn from the aorta during systole and reinjected during diastole, thereby reducing the systolic pressure of the heart and adding energy to the systemic circulation. It is found that an upper bound for the effectiveness of such devices is given by a formula that considers stroke output of the unaided heart and the increment caused by the pump with a stroke. The division of effort of the pump between the reduction of pressure and the increase of flow depends on the physiological mechanical impedance of the heart. The total effect is, however, independent of the impedance.

Measurement of energetic particle radiation at the synchronous altitude aboard ATS-6

The Aerospace Corporation energetic electron-proton spectrometer operating on ATS-6 is described. This experiment detects energetic electrons in four channels between 140 keV and greater than 3.9 MeV, measures energetic protons in five energy channels between 2.3 and 80 MeV and energetic alpha particles in three channels between 9.4 and 94 MeV. After more than a year of operation in orbit, the experiment continues to return excellent data on the behavior of energetic magnetospheric electrons as well as information regarding the fluxes of solar protons and alpha particles.

Micropulsations in the morning sector. II - Satellite observations of 10to 45-s waves at synchronous orbit, ATS 1

A study of 13 wave events having 10- to 45-s periods and observed by ATS 1 in the morning sector reveals that these events, which have been called band-limited pulsations and are thought to be related to Pi 1, appear actually to be Pc 3. Digital power-spectral and coherency analysis was used to determine the characteristics of the wave activity. The average peak frequency of the events (about 0.04 Hz) and their generally narrow-band nature correspond closely with the characteristics of Pc 3. The local-time distribution of the events (peaking at 0900 LT) and their less than complete association with substorms also correspond more closely with Pc 3 characteristics. The orientation of the major axis of the polarization ellipse for these events was predominantly azimuthal, which agrees more closely with the east-west polarization of Pi 1 observed on the ground. However, some examples of radial orientation were observed in the satellite data.

ATS-6 - Synchronous orbit trapped radiation studies with an electron-proton spectrometer

The paper discusses the University of Minnesota experiment on ATS-6 designed to study the origin and dynamics of high-energy electrons and protons in the outer radiation belt and in the near-earth plasma sheet. The experiment consists of two nearly identical detector assemblies, each of which is a magnetic spectrometer containing four gold-silicon surface barrier detectors. The instrument provides a clean separation between protons and electrons by the combination of pulse height analysis and magnetic deflection.

Plasma injection at synchronous orbit and spatial and temporal auroral morphology

Analysis of ATS 5 particle spectrograms and simultaneous meridian-scanning photometer data obtained at the base of the ATS field line has revealed systematic relationships between temporal and spatial auroral morphology and particle-injection events. The details of these relationships depend on previous injection events, the local time of the observatory with respect to current-injection events, and the extent and magnitude of current injections. A persistent zone of weak aurora is related to steady plasma-sheet drizzle, and the equatorward edge of this aurora delineates field lines threading the inner edge of the plasma sheet. Auroras associated with injection events superimpose on this preexisting pattern, with the lowest latitude of new precipitation depending on local time. In general, plasma energization is not required between the equatorial plane and the ionosphere to account for observed auroral intensities. The data indicate occasional occurrence of enhanced loss-cone fluxes, suggesting low-altitude field-aligned acceleration. A summary figure shows how various characteristic auroral-precipitation regions are related to the shape, extent, and orientation of the substorm injection boundary and to the subsequent drift paths of injected plasma.

Preliminary demonstration of precision DSN clock synchronization by radio interferometry

A wideband digital data acquisition system has been developed to measure the clock offsets to the 10-ns accuracy required to facilitate three-way spacecraft ranging, to monitor the hydrogen maser frequency standard rates to 1 part in 10 to the forteenth power and to potentially reduce operational costs by replacing the current DSN operational time sync system.

Simultaneous Pc 1 observations by the synchronous satellite ATS-1 and ground stations - Implications concerning IPDP generation mechanisms

Results are presented for an experimental study designed to examine the properties of Pc 1 activity observed simultaneously at ATS 1 and two Canadian ground stations. The Pc 1 activity is found to follow substorm expansion phase onsets and to occur most frequently at dusk. Dynamic spectra waves at both ground stations are that of IPDP (Intervals of Pulsations Diminishing by Period) type Pc 1. A previously proposed mechanism to explain IPDP generation, which required a rapid increase in the equatorial magnetic field to produce IPDP, is inconsistent with the dynamic spectra and magnetic field observations. Either purely azimuthal or a combination of azimuthal and radial inward drift of energetic resonant protons is an equally plausible mechanism to explain IPDP generation.

Nodding feed antenna for communications with satellites in synchronous orbit

The design, fabrication, and performance of a parabolic, ground receiving antenna system with a feed that nods in one axis producing a maximum beam deviation 1.1 deg from boresight is described. The antenna design was: (1)to lower the weight (and the subsequent cost) of the supporting structure and the actuator motors for a tracking antenna by moving just the feed; (2) to use a manual tracking system eliminating the need for expensive electronic controls or computers; (3) to provide for several hours of unattended operation; and (4)to permit operation of the antenna by unskilled personnel. Also described are some physical and orbital phenomenon that effect the operation or design of the antenna. One is the motion of a nearly geostationary satellite due to gravitational forces from the sun, the moon, and other stellar bodies. Others are the rotation of the nodding axis and the feed polarization as a function of the location of the station on the earth. A comparison of per unit cost was made for one unit and a quantity of 100.

Carrier synchronization techniques for unbalanced QPSK signals. I

This paper uses MAP estimation techniques to obtain carrier reconstruction circuits for unbalanced QPSK signals. In addition, the performance analysis of these circuits is carried out to the extent that a loop design can proceed. Numerical results are presented in order to demonstrate the utility of the theory developed. This signal design will be used in the development of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and the Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System (NAVSTAR GPS).
