Large-scale computations in fluid mechanics; Proceedings of the Fifteenth Summer Seminar on Applied Mathematics, University of California, La Jolla, CA, June 27-July 8, 1983. Parts 1 & 2

Papers are presented on such topics as the use of semi-Lagrangian advective schemes in meteorological modeling; computation with high-resolution upwind schemes for hyperbolic equations; dynamics of flame propagation in a turbulent field; a modified finite element method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations; computational fusion magnetohydrodynamics; and a nonoscillatory shock capturing scheme using flux-limited dissipation. Consideration is also given to the use of spectral techniques in numerical weather prediction; numerical methods for the incorporation of mountains in atmospheric models; techniques for the numerical simulation of large-scale eddies in geophysical fluid dynamics; high-resolution TVD schemes using flux limiters; upwind-difference methods for aerodynamic problems governed by the Euler equations; and an MHD model of the earth's magnetosphere.

Micrometeorite dynamic pyrometamorphism: Nonstoichiometric clinoenstatite (CLEN)

Polymorphs of enstatite are common phases in many meteorites. They contain clues on their formation and the thermal evolution of their host rock which includes shock metamorphism. Rare, micron-sized, CLEN whiskers and thin platelets in chondritic porous micrometeorites were interpreted as solar nebula condensates that remained unaffected during atmospheric entry flash-heating. This CLEN formed by protoenstatite (PEN) inversion whereby the surface energy of the micron-sized PEN crystals aided the OREN-CLEN transformation or by metastable growth. Ca-poor, Mg,Fe-pyroxene with unequilibrated, intraparticle, Mg/(Mg+Fe) distributions occur in most chondritic micrometeorites. These distributions are a parent body signature that survived dynamic pyrometamorphism because the duration of the thermal spike during atmospheric entry is too short but this conclusion does not consider the ultrafine grain size of micrometeorites. The maximum temperature and duration of the heating event will depend on the kinetic energy and entry angle of the incoming micrometeorite. But lacking detailed petrological data for an individual particle, its thermal profile during atmospheric entry can not be deduced from its mass alone as a function of entry angle. In order to constrain dynamic pyrometamorphism in unmelted micrometeorites, I determined the petrological composition and silicate mineralogy in non-chondritic micrometeorites L2005T13, L2005E40, and L2006A28.

Shock Hugoniot measurements of single-crystal 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) compressed to 83 GPa

We present laser-driven shock Hugoniot measurements of single-crystal (SC) 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) between 15 and 83 GPa, spanning pressures below and well above the Chapman–Jouguet pressure of ~28 GPa for TATB formulations (TATB grains mixed with plastic binders at 5–10 wt. %). The new SC data are generally ~3% more compressible than previously published data on neat and formulated TATB measured in gas-gun and explosive-driven experiments. An exception is at compressions in the density of ~1.5 (~30–40 GPa), where our new SC data exhibit significantly lower pressures than previous results on overdriven TATB formulations, suggesting that our SC samples remain largely unreacted below 35 GPa over the short nanosecond-time scales inherent to our laser-driven experiments. We report these novel equation-of-state measurements are a critical step toward understanding TATB in its most fundamental form and improving predictive modeling of TATB-based explosives.

Comparing temperature convergence of shocked thin films of tin and iron to a bulk temperature source

An outstanding challenge in developing a complete equation of state for materials at elevated pressure and temperature is a robust method of determining the bulk temperature state under dynamic conditions. In metals, the determination of bulk temperature states by optical pyrometry is complicated by the small optical depth and thermal conduction effects. These effects lead to observed temperatures differing by 20% or more from the bulk temperature state. In this work, we show the presence of thermal conduction effects in temperature measurements of tin and iron coatings during dynamic compression experiments. We demonstrate that tin, in contrast to iron, coatings can fail to converge to a bulk temperature source over the time scale of the experiment, requiring the experimenter to modify assumptions, design, or analysis. This work bounds thermal transport at shocked conditions.

Coupling solidification kinetics with phase-behavior computations in hydrodynamic simulations of high-pressure, dynamic-compression processes

In this study, we report a numerical scheme to integrate models for the kinetics of solidification processes together with phase-behavior computations in the context of continuum-scale hydrodynamic simulations. The objective of the phase-behavior computations is to determine the pressure and temperature, given the following three sets of inputs: (1) an appropriate equation of state to describe our system, (2) the phase fraction(s) produced by the kinetic models, (3) and the volume and internal energy obtained by solving the conservation equations that govern the hydrodynamic behavior. The kinetics are assumed to be governed by the Kolmogorov–Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation, and the nucleation and growth rates that enter into that equation are functions of the pressure and temperature produced by the phase-behavior computations. Our formulation allows for the fluid and solid phases to be at different temperatures (thermal nonequilibrium) and pressures (arising from surface-tension-induced Laplace contributions). The formulation is presented in a fairly general setting that is independent of any particular material, although we demonstrate it in some examples related to high-energy-density science applications where materials are rapidly compressed to pressures exceeding several gigapascals in less than a microsecond. We conclude with a critical evaluation of our approach and provide suggestions for future work to improve the predictive capabilities and generality of the models.

Machine learning visualization tool for exploring parameterized hydrodynamics

We are interested in the computational study of shock hydrodynamics, i.e. problems involving compressible solids, liquids, and gases that undergo large deformation. These problems are dynamic and nonlinear and can exhibit complex instabilities. Due to advances in high performance computing it is possible to parameterize a hydrodynamic problem and perform a computational study yielding $\mathscr{O} (TB)$ of simulation state data. We present an interactive machine learning tool that can be used to compress, browse, and interpolate these large simulation datasets. This tool allows computational scientists and researchers to quickly visualize 'what-if' situations, perform sensitivity analyses, and optimize complex hydrodynamic experiments.

Carbon-carbon interactions in warm dense titanium carbide

Encouraged by experimental reports of diamond precipitation in carbon-containing materials under warm dense matter conditions and in shock compression experiments, we examine the behavior of carbon in TiC using density functional theory-molecular dynamics simulations. Two polymorphs of TiC are considered, the ambient-pressure B1 ($Fm$$\overline{3}$$m$) structure in which C-C interactions are prevented by geometric constraints, and a high-pressure Cmcm structure in which C atoms condense into zigzag chains. Chemistry-inspired bonding analyses confirm the covalently bound nature of these chains and further illuminate important interatomic interactions in both structures. Upon melting of B1 TiC, new short-range C-C interactions develop in the liquid, while the pre-existing C-C interactions in Cmcm TiC persist in the liquid. Here, the resulting carbon networks in the melt provide a promising environment for eventual diamond nucleation.
