First Measurement of $\Lambda$ Electroproduction off Nuclei in the Current and Target Fragmentation Regions

We report results of $\Lambda$ hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets obtained with the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014 GeV electron beam. These results represent the first measurements of the $\Lambda$ multiplicity ratio and transverse momentum broadening as a function of the energy fraction ($z$) in the current and target fragmentation regions. The multiplicity ratio exhibits a strong suppression at high $z$ and an enhancement at low $z$. The measured transverse momentum broadening is an order of magnitude greater than that seen for light mesons. This indicates that the propagating entity interacts very strongly with the nuclear medium, which suggests that propagation of di-quark configurations in the nuclear medium takes place at least part of the time, even at high $z$. The trends of these results are qualitatively described by the GiBUU transport model, particularly for the multiplicity ratios. These observations will potentially open a new era of studies of the structure of the nucleon as well as of strange baryons.

CHARGED-CURRENT DOUBLE-DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRON NEUTRINOS IN LOW RECOIL REGION ON HYDROCARBON AT ∼7 GEV

Measuring neutrino mixing angles, especially the CP violation phase and mass hierarchy, is one of the priorities of the neutrino community and long baseline neutrino oscillation programs, such as T2K and NOvA, provided the most precise measurements to date. One of the dominating uncertainties of the measurements is the neutrino interaction model due to the difficulty of modeling the nuclear effects from first principles. As a result, neutrino scattering experiments such as MINERvA were conducted to provide data as input to reduce this uncertainty. This thesis presents a charged-current double-differential cross section measurement of electron neutrinos using the MINERvA detector in terms of available energy (a proxy of energy transfer), three-momentum transfer, and/or transverse momentum of the final state electron. This measurement focuses on the transition region between quasi-elastic and resonance processes, where the multi-nucleon knockout process dominates. The result is compared to a modified GENIE model and similar measurements using muon neutrino samples. In addition, this measurement reproduces the photon-like excess seen by previous MINERvA electron neutrino measurements.

Large-Aperture High-Field NB3SN Magnets for the 2nd EIC Interaction Region*

The design concept of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), which is under construction at BNL, considers adding a 2nd Interaction Region (IR) and detector to the machine after completion of the present EIC project. Recent progress with development and fabrication of large-aperture high-field magnets based on the Nb3Sn technology for the HL-LHC makes this technology interesting for the 2nd EIC IR. This paper summarizes the results of feasibility studies of large-aperture high-field Nb3Sn dipoles and quadrupoles for the 2nd EIC IR.

Implementation of Isotopic Removal Capability in Griffin for Multi-Region MSR Depletion Analysis

This work reports the first step in such an analysis, the verification of isotope removal capability for multi-region MSR depletion in Griffin. Verification studies are performed against SERPENT for chemical species removal from the core to an off-gas system for MSR analysis. A brief review of the Bateman equations including the isotopic removal term is provided along with a description of the example problem used in the verification studies performed in Griffin versus SERPENT. Next, the results of the verification study are presented for isotopic depletion, isotopic depletion with removal, and the specific analysis case of varying the solubility of Iodine in a salt system and how this can affect material buildup in the off-gas system. Lastly, the results are analyzed and future work detailing the fully coupled MSR depletion analysis that incorporates the true multiphysics of the system is discussed.

Classification Analytics of Pu-239 and U-235 Source Signatures Using Gamma Spectral Regions

Machine learning detection methods using gamma signatures from spectral measurements of low-intensity Pu-239 and U-235 sources are studied. NaI detectors located at different distances fromthe source have been used to collect the training and independent testing data sets. The source is introduced via a shielded conduit into the facility where it is surrounded by 21 NaI detectors deployed over 6 x 6 meters area in the formation of two concentric circles and a spiral. The counts in gamma spectral regions associated with these two sources are estimated at 1 second intervals for each NaI detector, and are used as classifier features for detecting the source presence. Eight different classifiers with five basic properties — namely, smooth, non-smooth, statistical, structural, and hyper-parameter tuning — are trained and tested using the background and source measurements collected over multiple experimental runs. While the overall classifier performance improved as detectors closer to the source are used, some identically produced detectors under-performed but differently between two sources. Some classifiers achieved lower training error but their testing error based on independent measurements is higher for both sources. Overall, these results indicate significant over-fitting by these methods, and illustrate the complexity of training and selecting the machine learning methods to solve these detection problems.

Real-Time Regional PV Spinning Reserve Estimator with AGC Look-Ahead Windows: Preprint

Curtailed PV generation is a zero-marginal cost spinning reserve that can be used for a number of active power control services. However, unlike the traditional spinning reserve providers, i.e., fossil-fueled generators, who have well-defined operating characteristics, e.g., available headroom or potential high limit (PHL), PV plants have by nature variable and uncertain operating characteristics. To ensure the effective coordination between PV plants and the system operator during an active power control event, accurate forecasts of the PV PHL are essential. A novel reference-control grouping based scaling method has been proposed by NREL to estimate the PV PHL in real-time. This work further enhances the methodology by: 1) improving the model accuracy through machine learning; 2) considering look-ahead windows introduced by the computation and communication latencies; 3) applying the method to regional spinning reserve estimation. A significant performance improvement, over 1.6% of estimation error reduction, has been observed based on real-world data collected by CAISO and PV plant operators.

Observational Assessment of Metocean Conditions in the WFIP3 Region

The WFIP3 project, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is aimed at improving our understanding of the physics of the atmosphere and ocean that dictate the structure and variability of the wind resource within the MABL. As part of the project, a long-term offshore field campaign will take place along the U.S. East Coast to provide an unprecedented characterization of the MABL in the vicinity of the Massachusetts/Rhode Island wind energy lease areas. The unprecedented observational data set collected in the WFIP3 field campaign will allow intensive numerical modeling development and validation efforts. To inform the field campaign design and the preliminary studies associated with it, here we perform a characterization of the MABL and ocean conditions by leveraging available observations in the region.

Short Range Correlation measurements in the quasielastic region with an 11 GeV beam

Electron scattering is a powerful tool for studying high momentum nucleon and quark distributions in nuclei. Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with its 11 GeV beam is capable of studying high momentum nucleons with unmatched precision. The role of short range nucleon configurations and quark distributions is significant for understanding the dynamics of nuclei and their underlying components. Scattering cross section measurements in the kinematic regime x > 1, a region forbidden to the free nucleon, are sensitive to high momentum nucleons, which are believed to come from short range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are strongly interacting, high momentum nucleons with a low center-of-mass momentum that are highly decoupled from the nuclear environment. The focus of this research is on precision measurements of 2N SRCs, the observation of 3N SRCs, and the measurement of parton distribution functions at x > 1

All Systems Go: Regional Collaborations for Scaling AEC Innovation: Preprint

The high and rising cost of preserving and delivering housing in the U.S. requires changes to existing practices of finance, design, and construction. Innovative methods such as industrialized construction could offer the means to address housing undersupply while reducing delivery costs, operational costs and material waste in the building industry, but they face challenges to success and to scale. Simultaneously, construction and cleantech innovators themselves face skepticism from the traditional entrepreneurial ecosystem such as incubators and accelerators while attempting to navigate systems level challenges. To respond to this need, various public and private sector stakeholders have launched initiatives to support innovative companies. These include nonprofits such as Terner Labs and Ivory Innovations offering curated programming to architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) startups; housing developers in Minnesota and California "bundling" multiple projects together to reach economies of scale with a consistent project team; public and private sector entities developing "catalogues" of pre-approved home designs in the U.S. and Canada. This exploratory paper documents several of these emerging ecosystem-development efforts to support innovative housing approaches, characterizing them by leading stakeholder and intervention strategy based on publicly available information. The paper finds that these initiatives share similar high level goals but vary in implementation, reflecting different stakeholder priorities, regional market and policy dynamics, and housing typologies. The early stage of these efforts offer limited data for comparing actual outcomes, but the paper highlights common qualitative themes and identifies opportunities for further research and potential coordination among these efforts.

Measurement of $\nu_\mu/\bar\nu_\mu$ CC double-differential cross sections on MINERvA hydrocarbon target for the shallow inelastic scattering background region

Cross section measurements are essential for all neutrino oscillation experiments. In fact, uncertaintiesassociated to cross section model parameters constitute one of the dominant sources oferrors in current oscillation analyses. In particular, understanding neutrino-induced pion productionin the kinematic regime known as shallow inelastic scattering (SIS) is critical for improvingneutrino interaction modeling in event generators. In this study, 416,233 (237,468) muon neutrino(antineutrino) interactions are measured in a SIS background region, predominantly made ofbaryon resonances. The analyzed datasets were collected from 2013 to 2019, comprising neutrinosgenerated by the Fermilab NuMI facility, with mean energy of 6 GeV, and the interactions occurredon the MINERvA hydrocarbon target. The measurements are presented as double-differential crosssections in terms of the outgoing muon longitudinal and transverse momentum components, aswell as the Bjorken x and y variables. Comparisons between the extracted data and predictionsfrom several generators reveal significant discrepancies across most kinematic bins.
