Automatic Control of Personal Rapid Transit Vehicles

The requirements for automatic longitudinal control of a string of closely packed personal vehicles are outlined. Optimal control theory is used to design feedback controllers for strings of vehicles. An important modification of the usual optimal control scheme is the inclusion of jerk in the cost functional. While the inclusion of the jerk term was considered, the effect of its inclusion was not sufficiently studied. Adding the jerk term will increase passenger comfort.

Liquid hydrogen turbopump rapid start program

Effort was directed toward the completion of the coated feed system testing and data analysis of both the uncoated and coated system tests. A total of 11 tests were conducted with the coated feed system during three days of testing. Chill data was acquired for thermal conditioning of the system from ambient initial conditions, using a duct inlet propellent pressure of 72 psig. After three tests to determine steady state pump performance and nominal start transient operation, three coated system turbopump starts were attempted with various degrees of prechill.

Balloon Observations of Rapid Variations in Solar Particle Flux During July 1972

Solar energetic particles were observed with excellent time resolution with the aid of a large hodoscope flown on a balloon. A transient increase in the intensity of solar protons which can be interpreted in considerable detail as evidence for the coherent propagation of particles injected by a west limb flare occurring at 1025UT on July 22, 1972 is reported.

Rapid iterative reanalysis for automated design

A method for iterative reanalysis in automated structural design is presented for a finite-element analysis using the direct stiffness approach. A basic feature of the method is that the generalized stiffness and inertia matrices are expressed as functions of structural design parameters, and these generalized matrices are expanded in Taylor series about the initial design. Only the linear terms are retained in the expansions. The method is approximate because it uses static condensation, modal reduction, and the linear Taylor series expansions. The exact linear representation of the expansions of the generalized matrices is also described and a basis for the present method is established. Results of applications of the present method to the recalculation of the natural frequencies of two simple platelike structural models are presented and compared with results obtained by using a commonly applied analysis procedure used as a reference. In general, the results are in good agreement. A comparison of the computer times required for the use of the present method and the reference method indicated that the present method required substantially less time for reanalysis. Although the results presented are for relatively small-order problems, the present method will become more efficient relative to the reference method as the problem size increases. An extension of the present method to static reanalysis is described, ana a basis for unifying the static and dynamic reanalysis procedures is presented.

A study of rapid engine response systems for an advanced high subsonic, long range commercial aircraft

A dynamic model representing the characteristics of an advanced technology study engine (1985 certification time period) was constructed and programmed on an analogue/digital computer. This model was then exercised to study and evaluate a large number of techniques, singly and in combination, to improve engine response. Several effective methods to reduce engine accelerating time are identified.

Rapid global geoid mapping with satellite altimetry.

Theoretical demonstration of the feasibility to build, fly, calibrate, and evaluate an orbiting altimeter system that is to offer the basis for accurate geoidal mapping on a global scale. The problems involved in instrumentation and orbit determination are discussed. Following a description of the Skylab altimeter characteristics, a more advanced design is postulated. This new design is shown to be capable of an accuracy of better than 50 cm and noise levels of 20 cm. With proper premission analysis and careful scheduling, a global geoidal map of 1- to 2-meter resolution can be obtained within an 18- to 20-day period by using a high-inclination orbit.

Rapid processing of multispectral scanner data using linear techniques.

Tests have been made to compare linear and quadratic techniques for processing multispectral scanner data. The tests have been limited to a few selected sets of agricultural data. Two aspects of processing were studied. The first, the selection of a subset of channels to be used in the decision function, was found to be faster by a factor of 50 when a linear method was used. Second, in recognition processing, our linear decision rule produced a lower error rate and utilized a larger number of channels for equal processing times. Nevertheless, when the criterion is lowest possible error rate, irregardless of processing time, the quadratic rule is preferable.

Rapid method for determining nitrogen in tantalum and niobium alloys

Adaptation of commercial instrument which measures nitrogen and oxygen in steel gave results in less than four minutes. Sample is heated in helium atmosphere in single-use graphite crucible. Platinum flux facilitates melting of sample. Released gases are separated chromatographically and measured in thermal-conductivity cell.

Laser-scanning techniques for rapid ballistics identification

Two different laser-scanning methods may be utilized. In each case scanned cylindrical bullet surface is displayed ""unwrapped'' on oscilloscope screen. Bullets are compared by photographing each display and superimposing negatives of two images. With some modifications bullets can be scanned and compared by superimposing images on screen of dual-beam oscilloscope.

Approach to rapid mission design and planning

Methods and techniques are described for implementation in automated computer systems to assess parametric data, capabilities, requirements and constraints for planning earth orbit missions. Mission planning and design procedures are defined using two types of typical missions as examples. These missions were the high energy Astronomical Observatory Satellite missions, and Small Applications Technology Satellite missions.

A rapid numerical solution to subsonic flow over planar and axisymmetric profiles at an angle of attack of 0 deg

A numerical solution is presented for the incompressible flow over thin planar and axisymmetric profiles at an angle of attack of 0 degrees. The method uses a finite-difference field solution to the governing equation with a Gauss-Seidel successive overrelaxation scheme. However, the use of a simple Cartesian grid system restricts this method to slender profiles. Results are presented for a cambered airfoil, airfoil in wall effect (two-dimensional flowthrough inlet), body of revolution, and flowthrough nacelle. A computer program is presented which can be used for any of the previously mentioned cases with simple input changes. Results for compressible flow are available with the use of the appropriate two-dimensional or axisymmetric compressibility corrections. Computational time for a typical field calculation of 3000 grid points and 200 cycles through the field is less than 1 minute with less than 50,000 octal storage on the Control Data Corporation 6600 computing system.

The rapid quantitation of the filamentous blue-green alga plectonema boryanum by the luciferase assay for ATP

Plectonema boryanum is a filamentous blue green alga. Blue green algae have a procaryotic cellular organization similar to bacteria, but are usually obligate photoautotrophs, obtaining their carbon and energy from photosynthetic mechanism similar to higher plants. This research deals with a comparison of three methods of quantitating filamentous populations: microscopic cell counts, the luciferase assay for ATP and optical density measurements.

A rapid change in the low energy cut-off of Scorpius X-1

Sco X-1 was observed on June 10, 1972 near 04 hr 33 min U.T. simultaneously in the optical (B) the soft X-ray (0.1 to 2.4 keV) and the X-ray (1.5 to 20 keV) bands of the spectrum. It is believed that a change of short duration in the absorbing medium associated with Sco X-1 was observed. The medium attenuating the low energy X-ray flux from Sco X-1 has apparently changed by more than 40% on a time scale of less than 45 sec.
