Observation of New Ω c 0 States Decaying to the Ξ c + K - Final State

Two new excited states, Ω c (3185) 0 and Ω c ⁢(3327) 0 , are observed in the $Ξ^{+}_{c}$K - invariant-mass spectrum using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . Five previously observed excited $Ω^{0}_{c}$ states are confirmed, namely Ω c ⁢(3000) 0 , Ω c ⁢(3050) 0 , Ω c⁢ (3065) 0 , Ω c⁢ (3090) 0 , and Ω c⁢ (3119) 0 . The masses and widths of these seven states are measured with the highest precision to date.

Observation of $\tau$ lepton pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We present an observation of photon-photon production of $\tau$ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 $\mu$b$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The $\gamma\gamma$$\to$$\tau^+\tau^-$ process is observed for $\tau\tau$ events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is $\sigma(\gamma\gamma$$\to$$\tau^+\tau^-)$ = 4.8 $\pm$ 0.6 (stat) $\pm$ 0.5 (syst) $\mu$b, in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using $\sigma(\gamma\gamma$$\to$$\tau^+\tau^-)$, we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the $\tau$ lepton of $a_\tau$ = 0.001 $^{+0.055}_{-0.089}$.

Observation of W Z γ Production in p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of W Z γ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1 ± 1.2 fb − 1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The W Z γ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, p p → W Z γ → ℓ ′ ± ν ℓ + ℓ − γ ( ℓ ( ′ ) = e , μ ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01 ± 0.30 ( stat ) ± 0.16 ( syst ) fb . The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50 ± 0.06 fb . The observed significance of the W Z γ signal is 6.3 σ , compared with an expected significance of 5.0 σ . © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Observation of W W γ Production and Search for H γ Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The observation of W W γ production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 is presented. The observed (expected) significance is 5.6 (5.1) standard deviations. Events are selected by requiring exactly two leptons (one electron and one muon) of opposite charge, moderate missing transverse momentum, and a photon. The measured fiducial cross section for W W γ is 5.9 ± 0.8 ( stat ) ± 0.8 ( syst ) ± 0.7 ( modeling ) fb , in agreement with the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics prediction. The analysis is extended with a search for the associated production of the Higgs boson and a photon, which is generated by a coupling of the Higgs boson to light quarks. The result is used to constrain the Higgs boson couplings to light quarks. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Observation of the Anomalous Shape of X ( 1840 ) in J / ψ → γ 3 ( π + π − ) Indicating a Second Resonance Near p p ¯ Threshold

Using a sample of ( 10087 ± 44 ) × 10 6 J / ψ events, which is about 45 times larger than that was previously analyzed, a further investigation on the J / ψ → γ 3 ( π + π − ) decay is performed. A significant distortion at 1.84 GeV / c 2 in the line shape of the 3 ( π + π − ) invariant mass spectrum is observed for the first time, which could be resolved by two overlapping resonant structures, X ( 1840 ) and X ( 1880 ) . The new state X ( 1880 ) is observed with a statistical significance larger than 10 σ . The mass and width of X ( 1880 ) are determined to be 1882.1 ± 1.7 ± 0.7 MeV / c 2 and 30.7 ± 5.5 ± 2.4 MeV , respectively, which indicates the existence of a p p ¯ bound state. First Constraints on the Epoch of Reionization Using the Non-Gaussianity of the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect from the South Pole Telescope and Herschel-SPIRE Observations

We report results from an analysis aimed at detecting the trispectrum of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (kSZ) effect by combining data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Herschel-SPIRE experiments over a 100 deg 2 field. The SPT observations combine data from the previous and current surveys, namely SPTpol and SPT-3G, to achieve depths of 4.5, 3, and 16 μ K - arcmin in bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. For SPIRE, we include data from the 600 and 857 GHz bands. We reconstruct the velocity-induced large-scale correlation of the small-scale kSZ signal with a quadratic estimator that uses two cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps, constructed by optimally combining data from all the frequency bands. We reject the null hypothesis of a zero trispectrum at 10.3 σ level. However, the measured trispectrum contains contributions from both the kSZ and other undesired components, such as CMB lensing and astrophysical foregrounds, with kSZ being sub-dominant. We use the agora simulations to estimate the expected signal from CMB lensing and astrophysical foregrounds. After accounting for the contributions from CMB lensing and foreground signals, we do not detect an excess kSZ-only trispectrum and use this nondetection to set constraints on reionization. By applying a prior based on observations of the Gunn-Peterson trough, we obtain an upper limit on the duration of reionization of Δ z re , 50 < 4.5 (95% confidence level). We find these constraints are fairly robust to foregrounds assumptions. This trispectrum measurement is independent of, but consistent with, Planck’s optical depth measurement. This result is the first constraint on the epoch of reionization using the non-Gaussian nature of the kSZ signal.

Observation of Enhanced Long-Range Elliptic Anisotropies Inside High-Multiplicity Jets in p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- k T algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity | η jet | < 1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δ ϕ * and Δ η * ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η * , ϕ * are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to N ch j ≈ 100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for | Δ η * | > 2 . For low- N ch j jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v 2 * , is observed to decrease with N ch j . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v 2 * emerges at N ch j ≳ 80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

The study is based on an LHCb dataset recorded at center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb −1 . The data disfavor a nonresonant 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙 production but are consistent with a resonant model including several resonant states observed previously only in 𝐵 + →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙⁢𝐾 + decays. The 𝜒 𝑐⁢0⁡ (4500) state is observed with a significance over 6⁢𝜎 and the 𝜒 𝑐⁢1 ⁡(4274) is confirmed with a significance of more than 4⁢𝜎.

Observation of a Giant Goos-Hänchen Shift for Matter Waves

The Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift describes a phenomenon in which a specularly reflected beam is translated along the reflecting surface such that the incident and reflected rays no longer intersect at the surface. Using a neutron spin-echo technique and a specially designed magnetic multilayer mirror, we have measured the relative phase between the reflected up and down neutron spin states in total reflection. The relative GH shift calculated from this phase shows a strong resonant enhancement at a particular incident neutron wave vector, which is due to a waveguiding effect in one of the magnetic layers. Calculations based on the observed phase difference between the neutron states indicate a propagation distance along the waveguide layer of 0.65 mm for the spin-down state, which we identify with the magnitude of the giant GH shift. The existence of a physical GH shift is confirmed by the observation of neutron absorption in the waveguide layer. Here, we propose ways in which our experimental method may be exploited for neutron quantum-enhanced sensing of thin magnetic layers.

Observation of the Open-Charm Tetraquark Candidate T c s 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 in the B − → D − D 0 K S 0 Decay

An amplitude analysis of B − → D − D 0 K S 0 decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 , collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A resonant structure of spin-parity 0 + is observed in the D 0 K S 0 invariant-mass spectrum with a significance of 5.3 σ . The mass and width of the state, modeled with a Breit-Wigner line shape, are determined to be 2883 ± 11 ± 8 MeV / c 2 and 87 − 47 + 22 ± 17 MeV , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These properties and the quark content are consistent with those of the open-charm tetraquark candidate T c s 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 observed previously in the D + K − final state of the B − → D − D + K − decay. This result confirms the existence of the T c s 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 state in a new decay mode. The T c s 1 * ( 2900 ) 0 state, reported in the B − → D − D + K − decay, is also searched for in the D 0 K S 0 invariant-mass spectrum of the B − → D − D 0 K S 0 decay, without finding evidence for it. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Observation of the W -Annihilation Process D s + → ω ρ + and Measurement of D s + → ϕ ρ + in D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 Decays

We present the first amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 , using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 , and report the first observation of the pure W -annihilation decay D s + → ω ρ + with a branching fraction of ( 0.99 ± 0.0 8 stat − 0.07 + 0.05 syst ) % . In comparison to the low significance of the D wave in the decay D s + → ϕ ρ + , the dominance of the D wave over the S and P waves, with a fraction of ( 51.85 ± 7.2 8 stat − 7.90 + 4.83 syst ) % observed in the decay D s + → ω ρ + , provides crucial information for the “polarization puzzle,” as well as for the understanding of charm meson decays. The branching fraction of D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 is measured to be ( 4.41 ± 0.1 5 stat ± 0.1 3 syst ) % . Moreover, the branching fraction of D s + → ϕ ρ + is measured to be ( 3.98 ± 0.3 3 stat − 0.19 + 0.21 syst ) % , and the R ϕ = B ( ϕ → π + π − π 0 ) / B ( ϕ → K + K − ) is determined to be ( 0.222 ± 0.01 9 stat − 0.016 + 0.016 syst ), which is consistent with the previous measurement based on charm meson decays, but deviates from the results from e + e − annihilation and K − N scattering experiments by more than 3 σ . Observation of a C -type short-range antiferromagnetic order in layer spacing expanded FeS

Here, we report neutron diffraction studies of FeS single crystals obtained from Rb x Fe 2-y S 2 single crystals via a hydrothermal method. While no $\sqrt{5}$×$\sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order or block antiferromagnetic order typical of Rb x Fe 2-y S 2 is found in our samples, we observe C-type short-range antiferromagnetic order with moments pointed along the c axis hosted by a different phase of FeS with an expanded interlayer spacing. The Néel temperature for this magnetic order is determined to be 170 ± 4 K. Our finding of a variant FeS structure hosting this C-type antiferromagnetic order demonstrates that the known FeS phase synthesized in this method is in the vicinity of a magnetically ordered ground state, providing insights into understanding a variety of phenomena observed in FeS and the related FeSe 1-x S x iron chalcogenide system.

Observation of biexciton emission from single semiconductor nanoplatelets

Quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) are intriguing systems for studying the influence of Auger recombination processes on the multiexciton emission efficiencies in the weak in-plane confinement regime. We investigate CdSe/CdS core/shell NPLs using cryogenic temperature single particle spectroscopy and observe bright biexciton emission at high excitation powers. The average binding energy of the biexcitons is determined to be 16.5 meV. The observed switching between the biexciton and trion states indicates charging-decharging dynamics of the NPLs mediated by the Auger ionization process. These findings are highly relevant for harvesting efficient biexciton emission for energy, lighting, and quantum applications.

Electron-hole symmetry in quasiparticle spectral weight of cuprates observed via infrared and photoemission spectroscopy

Here we performed an optical spectroscopy study of single crystals of Pr 0.85 LaCe 0.15 CuO 4–δ (PLCCO) to revisit the electron-hole asymmetry, which has been understood as a fundamental property of cuprates. Four differently annealed samples—as-grown, reduced, optimally oxygenated, and overoxygenated samples—were prepared, which have superconducting transition temperatures T c = 0, 15, 24, and 18 K, respectively. We observed that the low-energy quasiparticle spectral weights of all the PLCCO samples are significantly small in comparison with those of other electron-doped cuprate families. Instead, they are rather close to those of their hole-doped counterpart La 2–x Sr x CuO 4 . Accordingly, estimated effective carrier numbers N eff per Cu atom of superconducting samples are also very small, despite their relatively high critical temperatures. A complementary photoemission study reveals that the low-energy quasiparticle spectral weight of PLCCO is much smaller than that of Nd 1.85 Ce 0.15 CuO 4–δ , consistent with the optical results. Our observations demonstrate that PLCCO provides the electron-hole symmetry in the quasiparticle spectral weight and highlight the importance of Cu 3d–O 2p hybridization to understand the low-energy spectral weight transfer in doped cuprates.

Observation of a magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability in magnetically collimated plasma jets

We present the direct experimental observation of the formation of a diamagnetic cavity and magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor (MRT) instability in a β ≈ 1 high energy density plasma. Proton radiography is used to measure the two dimensional path-integrated magnetic field in a laser-produced plasma propagating parallel to a preimposed magnetic field. Flutelike structures, associated with the MRT instability, are observed to grow at the surface of the cavity, with a measured wavelength of 1.2 mm and growth time of 4 ns. These measurements are in good agreement with predictions of three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the GORGON code. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Window Observables for Benchmarking Parton Distribution Functions

Global analysis of collider and fixed-target experimental data and calculations from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are used to gain complementary information on the structure of hadrons. We propose novel “window observables” that allow for higher precision cross-validation between the different approaches, a critical step for studies that wish to combine the datasets. Global analyses are limited by the kinematic regions accessible to experiment, particularly in a range of Bjorken-𝑥, and lattice QCD calculations also have limitations requiring extrapolations to obtain the parton distributions. We provide two different window observables that can be defined within a region of 𝑥 where extrapolations and interpolations in global analyses remain reliable and where lattice QCD results retain sensitivity and precision.

Observation of Synchronization between Two Quantum van der Pol Oscillators in Trapped Ions

Synchronization is a hallmark of collective behavior that emerges when nonlinear systems interact, spanning scales from mechanical oscillators to planetary orbits. As a universal phenomenon, it underpins the study of complex systems and has far-reaching technological implications. While classical synchronization has a long and rich history, it has not been observed experimentally between multiple quantum limit-cycle oscillators despite a decade of theoretical investigations. We realize synchronization between two quantum van der Pol oscillators by engineering dissipation in a mixed-isotope trapped-ion quantum simulator. The synchronized state is encoded in a fixed relative phase between the oscillators that is inaccessible to individual measurements and revealed only through joint readout of both oscillators, in stark contrast to the system in the (deterministic) classical limit where synchronization can be observed via individual phase measurements. We further show that the relative phase can be precisely controlled and that the chain of two oscillators can synchronize to an external field, suggesting applications in sensing. Our results provide a promising pathway for studying more complex synchronized quantum dynamics beyond two oscillators, where a theoretical treatment becomes increasingly challenging, and it remains to be understood whether genuinely quantum features persist in such cases.

Search for an Anomalous Production of Charged-Current 𝜈 𝑒 Interactions without Visible Pions across Multiple Kinematic Observables in MicroBooNE

This Letter presents an investigation of low-energy electron-neutrino interactions in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam by the MicroBooNE experiment, motivated by the excess of electron-neutrino-like events observed by the MiniBooNE experiment. This is the first measurement to use data from all five years of operation of the MicroBooNE experiment, corresponding to an exposure of 1.11 × 10 21 protons on target, a 70% increase on past results. Two samples of electron neutrino interactions without visible pions are used, one with visible protons and one without any visible protons. The MicroBooNE data show reasonable agreement with the nominal prediction, with 𝑝 values ≥26.7% when the two 𝜈 𝑒 samples are combined, though the prediction exceeds the data in limited regions of phase space. The data are further compared to two empirical models that modify the predicted rate of electron-neutrino interactions in different variables in the simulation to match the unfolded MiniBooNE low energy excess. In the first model, this unfolding is performed as a function of electron neutrino energy, while the second model aims to match the observed shower energy and angle distributions of the MiniBooNE excess. This measurement excludes an electronlike interpretation of the MiniBooNE excess based on these models at >99% CLs in all kinematic variables.
