Asymptotic integration algorithms for nonhomogeneous, nonlinear, first order, ordinary differential equations

New methods for integrating systems of stiff, nonlinear, first order, ordinary differential equations are developed by casting the differential equations into integral form. Nonlinear recursive relations are obtained that allow the solution to a system of equations at time t plus delta t to be obtained in terms of the solution at time t in explicit and implicit forms. Examples of accuracy obtained with the new technique are given by considering systems of nonlinear, first order equations which arise in the study of unified models of viscoplastic behaviors, the spread of the AIDS virus, and predator-prey populations. In general, the new implicit algorithm is unconditionally stable, and has a Jacobian of smaller dimension than that which is acquired by current implicit methods, such as the Euler backward difference algorithm; yet, it gives superior accuracy. The asymptotic explicit and implicit algorithms are suitable for solutions that are of the growing and decaying exponential kinds, respectively, whilst the implicit Euler-Maclaurin algorithm is superior when the solution oscillates, i.e., when there are regions in which both growing and decaying exponential solutions exist.

Approximate analytic solutions for singular non-linear oscillators

Mickens (1981, 1984) has considered analytic techniques for obtaining approximate solutions to one-dimensional nonlinear oscillatory systems x(double-dot) + x = lambda f(x, x/dot/, lambda) where lambda is a small positive parameter and f is a nonlinear polynomial function of its arguments. However, in certain cases there is interest in the analysis of physical systems for which the nonlinear function f(x, x/dot/, lambda) is singular for finite values of x or x(dot). The present investigation is concerned with the use of existing approximate analytic schemes to obtain solutions to singular nonlinear oscillatory differential equations.

Learning physics-based reduced-order models from data using nonlinear manifolds

Here we present a novel method for learning reduced-order models of dynamical systems using nonlinear manifolds. First, we learn the manifold by identifying nonlinear structure in the data through a general representation learning problem. The proposed approach is driven by embeddings of low-order polynomial form. A projection onto the nonlinear manifold reveals the algebraic structure of the reduced-space system that governs the problem of interest. The matrix operators of the reduced-order model are then inferred from the data using operator inference. Numerical experiments on a number of nonlinear problems demonstrate the generalizability of the methodology and the increase in accuracy that can be obtained over reduced-order modeling methods that employ a linear subspace approximation.

Sub-Optimal Control of Nonlinear Flexible Space Structures

A simple yet effective method is presented for the on-line vibration control of nonlinear distributed parameter systems, with constant or time-varying properties, responding to a wide class of dynamic environments. The control procedure uses pulse generators located at selected positions throughout a given system. The degree of system oscillation near each controller determines the controller's activation time and pulse amplitude. The direct method of Liapunov is used to establish that the response of the controlled nonlinear system is Lagrange stable. Analytical and experimental studies of a wing-like plate demonstrate the feasibility, reliability, and robustness of the proposed vibration-suppression method.

Chaotic /strange/ and periodic behavior in instability saturation by the oscillating two-stream instability

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation with linear growth and damping is truncated to three waves. The resulting system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations describes the excitation of linearly damped waves by the oscillating two-stream instability driven by a linearly unstable pump wave. This system represents a simple model for the nonlinear saturation of a linearly unstable wave. The model is examined analytically and numerically as a function of the dimensionless parameters of the system. It is found that the model can exhibit a wealth of characteristic dynamical behavior including stationary equilibria, Hopf bifurcations to periodic orbits, period doubling bifurcations, chaotic solutions characteristic of a strange attractor, tangent bifurcations from chaotic to periodic solutions, transient chaos, and hysteresis. Many of these features are shown to be explainable on the basis of one-dimensional maps. In the case of chaotic solutions, evidence for the presence of a strange attractor is provided by demonstrating Cantor set-like structure (i.e., scale invariance) in the surface of section.

Estimating the Performance Loss Rate of Photovoltaic Systems Using Time Series Change Point Analysis

The accurate quantification of the performance loss rate of photovoltaic systems is critical for project economics. Following the current research activities in the photovoltaic performance and reliability field, this work presents a comparative assessment between common change point methods for performance loss rate estimation of fielded photovoltaic installations. An extensive testing campaign was thus performed to evaluate time series analysis approaches for performance loss rate evaluation of photovoltaic systems. Historical electrical data from eleven photovoltaic systems installed in Nicosia, Cyprus, and the locations’ meteorological measurements over a period of 8 years were used for this investigation. The application of change point detection algorithms on the constructed monthly photovoltaic performance ratio series revealed that the obtained trend might not always be linear. Specifically, thin film photovoltaic systems showed nonlinear behavior, while nonlinearities were also detected for some crystalline silicon photovoltaic systems. When applying several change point techniques, different numbers and locations of changes were detected, resulting in different performance loss rate values (varying by up to 0.85%/year even for the same number of change points). The results highlighted the importance of the application of nonlinear techniques and the need to extract a robust nonlinear model for detecting significant changes in time series data and estimating accurately the performance loss rate of photovoltaic installations.

A new method for analysis of limit cycle behavior of the NASA/JPL 70-meter antenna axis servos

A piecewise linear method of analyzing the effects of discontinuous nonlinearities on control system performance is described. The limit cycle oscillatory behavior of the system resulting from the nonlinearities is described in terms of a sequence of linear system transient responses. The equations are derived which relate the initial and the terminal conditions of successive transients and the boundary conditions imposed by the non-linearities. The method leads to a convenient computation algorithm for prediction of limit cycle characteristics resulting from discontinuous nonlinearities such as friction, deadzones, and hysteresis.

Nonlinear dynamics, bifurcations, and multi-stability in a vibro-impact system with geometric and multi-segmented freeplay nonlinearities

Freeplay is a common type of piecewise-smooth nonlinearity in dynamical systems, and it can cause discontinuity-induced bifurcations and other behaviors that may bring about undesirable and potentially damaging responses. Prior research has focused on piecewise-smooth systems with two or three distinct regions, but less attention is devoted to systems with more regions (i.e., multi-segmented systems). In this work, numerical analysis is performed on a dynamical system with multi-segmented freeplay, in which there are four stiffness transitions and five distinct regions in the phase space. Here, the effects of the multi-segmented parameters are studied through bifurcation diagram evolution along with induced multi-stable behavior and different bifurcations. These phenomena are interrogated through various tools, such as harmonic balance, basins of attraction, phase planes, and Poincaré section analysis. Results show that among the three multi-segmented parameters, the asymmetry has the strongest effect on the response of the system.

Effects of nonlinear damping in flexible space structures

The classical Krylov-Bogoliubov "averaging" technique is used to study a class of nonlinear damping models, for which the damping force is proportional to the product of positive integer or fractional power of absolute values of displacement and that of velocity. The results are compared with linear viscous damping models. The amplitude decrement of free vibration for a single mode system with nonlinear models depends not only on damping ratio, but also on the initial amplitude, the time to measure the response, frequency of the system, and the powers of displacement and velocity. For the distributed system, the action of nonlinear damping is found to reduce energy of the system as well as to pass energy to higher modes. Experimental evidence such as in Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment seems to support the need for nonlinear models.

Stability of distributed parameter systems.

A theorem is derived for the stability of solutions of general linear partial differential equations. A norm of the state space in the form of multiple integrals over the spatial domain is used for the Liapunov functional. Theorems and lemmas are also given for linear time-invariant constant coefficient distributed parameter systems, a class of nonlinear distributed parameter systems and for others with a Lure-type nonlinearity. The theorem conditions are similar to those known for corresponding ordinary differential equations but with operators replacing matrices.

New Nonlinear Multigrid Analysis

The nonlinear multigrid is an efficient algorithm for solving the system of nonlinear equations arising from the numerical discretization of nonlinear elliptic boundary problems. In this paper, we present a new nonlinear multigrid analysis as an extension of the linear multigrid theory presented by Bramble. In particular, we prove the convergence of the nonlinear V-cycle method for a class of mildly nonlinear second order elliptic boundary value problems which do not have full elliptic regularity.

Nonlinear compensation techniques for magnetic suspension systems

In aerospace applications, magnetic suspension systems may be required to operate over large variations in air-gap. Thus the nonlinearities inherent in most types of suspensions have a significant effect. Specifically, large variations in operating point may make it difficult to design a linear controller which gives satisfactory stability and performance over a large range of operating points. One way to address this problem is through the use of nonlinear compensation techniques such as feedback linearization. Nonlinear compensators have received limited attention in the magnetic suspension literature. In recent years, progress has been made in the theory of nonlinear control systems, and in the sub-area of feedback linearization. The idea is demonstrated of feedback linearization using a second order suspension system. In the context of the second order suspension, sampling rate issues in the implementation of feedback linearization are examined through simulation.

Nonlinear Control of Large Disturbances in Magnetic Bearing Systems

In this paper, the nonlinear operation of magnetic bearing control methods is reviewed. For large disturbances, the effects of displacement constraints and power amplifier current and di/dt limits on bearing control system performance are analyzed. The operation of magnetic bearings exhibiting self-excited large scale oscillations have been studied both experimentally and by simulation. The simulation of the bearing system has been extended to include the effects of eddy currents in the actuators, so as to improve the accuracy of the simulation results. The results of these experiments and simulations are compared, and some useful conclusions are drawn for improving bearing system robustness.
