Convex Optimization of Integrated Power-Gas Energy Flow Model With Applications to Probabilistic Energy Flow

Energy flow calculation is a fundamental problem of the integrated power and gas system (IPGS) operation and planning. However, the nonlinear gas flow model introduces major challenges to the energy flow calculation. In this paper, we propose a tractably convex optimization model to solve the energy flow problem in IPGSs. It is demonstrated that the proposed optimization model has the same optimal solution as the original nonlinear steady energy flow model. Also, piecewise linearization is adopted to tightly linearize the nonlinear objective function of the model, which transforms the formulated convex optimization into a linear program one. Thus, the computation complexity of the proposed energy flow model is significantly reduced as compared with the existing methods. In addition, the proposed model can be extended to probabilistic energy flow estimation. Extensive case studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed energy flow model using three IPGSs.

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) – Engineered Controls Database and Use

Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) addresses the reality that cyber-attacks on engineered systems can have consequences far beyond data loss or disruption of digital networks. When control systems are compromised, safety, reliability, and performance of the physical process itself may be threatened. This database is meant to establish clear examples and guidance for defining and applying engineered controls in CIE. It explains what engineered controls are, how they differ from information security measures, and how they are integrated into system design. The goal is to ensure that resilience is engineered into systems from the outset. Unlike cybersecurity protections that defend the digital layer, engineered controls act directly at the physical and algorithmic levels to guarantee that unacceptable consequences are prevented or limited. CIE keeps the consequences of a cyber attack from impacting the safety, reliability, and performance of engineered systems.

How Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) Affect Protection Relay Elements

This presentation starts with the details of IEEE 2800-2022 requirements of IBR for balanced and unbalanced faults. Then, it shows how to design a droop based GFM control to be IEEE 2800-2022 compliant. An performance evaluation is carried out to see if three OEM GFM inverters 2800-2022 compliant or not. And finally we show how IEEE 2800-2022 complaint and non-compliant GFM inverter will impact the transmission line protection elements, such as directional element and FID. Finally, recommendations are made if the GFM is not IEEE 2800-2022 compliant to disable the protection elements that rely on reliable and regulated negative sequence current.

Quantum computing in power systems

Electric power systems provide the backbone of modern industrial societies. Enabling scalable grid analytics is the keystone to successfully operating large transmission and distribution systems. However, today's power systems are suffering from ever-increasing computational burdens in sustaining the expanding communities and deep integration of renewable energy resources, as well as managing huge volumes of data accordingly. These unprecedented challenges call for transformative analytics to support the resilient operations of power systems. Recently, the explosive growth of quantum computing techniques has ignited new hopes of revolutionizing power system computations. Quantum computing harnesses quantum mechanisms to solve traditionally intractable computational problems, which may lead to ultra-scalable and efficient power grid analytics. This paper reviews the newly emerging application of quantum computing techniques in power systems. We present a comprehensive overview of existing quantum-engineered power analytics from different operation perspectives, including static analysis, transient analysis, stochastic analysis, optimization, stability, and control. We thoroughly discuss the related quantum algorithms, their benefits and limitations, hardware implementations, and recommended practices. We also review the quantum networking techniques to ensure secure communication of power systems in the quantum era. Finally, we discuss challenges and future research directions. This paper will hopefully stimulate increasing attention to the development of quantum-engineered smart grids.

Vanderbilt Alumni Hall

This dataset includes processed and raw data from the Vanderbilt Alumni Hall Building (VAH) located on the University of Vanderbilt Campus in Nashville, TN. VAH is a mixed use commercial building (LEED Gold Certified) that consists of classrooms, meeting rooms, office rooms, conference rooms, an exercise room, and others. This dataset spans one year of time-series data from 2019 and includes measurements corresponding to whole building electrical power, thermal power, zone level thermal power, set-point, indoor temperature, humidity, water and air side supply and return temperatures and flow rates as CSV files. In addition to the measurements, a metadata .json file, and a .ttl file to visualize the data as per BRICK schema are also included.

Seasonal Precipitation Classification during Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory Campaign

The Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) campaign, conducted from September 2021 to June 2023 in Crested Butte, Colorado, aimed to characterize precipitation processes in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). This increased observations of snowfall accumulation in this hydrologically significant watershed would be useful for quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE). Therefore, the Surface Quantitative Precipitation Estimate (SQUIRE) product was developed using the ARM-supported Colorado State University (CSU) X-band Precipitation Radar. Although SQUIRE will be only released for snowfall, by categorizing precipitation types, users can effectively utilize relevant datasets under diverse meteorological conditions. Moreover, the dataset facilitates validation of the QPE product and the analysis of seasonal variations in precipitation types at the surface. Hydrometeors classes are organized based on their phase and physical characteristics mapping the CSU (both winter Summer) and Py-ART classifications into four groups. 1. Liquid Precipitation: includs drizzle, rain, and large raindrops. 2. Frozen Snow and Ice : Pure Snow, combining ice crystals, aggregates, and vertically oriented ice structures. 3. Dense and Large frozen hydrometeors: including low- and high-density graupel and dry hail. 4.Melting: Wet Snow and Melting Hail, hydrometeors exhibiting both liquid and frozen characteristics.

Control System Upgrade for Canal ARC SAW

Upgrading the specific components of the Arc Saw, such as the HMI, the components of the chassis involving the I/O modules, servo motor modules, and PLC modules offers numerous advantages. By enhancing the HMI, the operators will benefit having a user-friendly interface, enabling smoother control and monitoring of the ARC SAW’s functionality. Upgrading the modules will contribute to an improved precision and responsiveness in changing modes of the ARC SAW as well as the adjusting the saw blades position, further enhancing the system's overall performance. These upgrades, while maintaining the same functionality, enable the latest technological advancements without needing significant changes or disruptions to existing operations.
