Integrated space program and vehicle system analysis (study B)

Work accomplished in the analysis of systems, space basing concepts, and space shuttle studies and alternative concepts is reported with emphasis on the preparation of cost estimates. It is concluded that space basing, as an operational mode, permits the assembly and maintenance of large space vehicles and payloads in low earth orbit, and may become the basing mode for space exploration.

Integrated command, control communication and computation system study

The study was conducted in three phases: a functional requirements phase; a functional architecture phase; and a design plan phase. The major emphasis was on the functional architecture phase and the approaches used for its functional hierarchy, operations concept, and interfaces.

On a study of the /Delta T/c and C/asterisk/ integrals for fracture analysis under non-steady creep

Applications of a vector quantity, path-independent integral which has an energy interpretation to the characterization of crack-tip fields in the range from fast to slow crack propagation are examined. The crack tip characterization parameter is defined in terms of a conservation integral for an area around the crack tip in a two-dimensional cracked body. The actual physical interpretation of the parameter is shown to be the difference in crack lengths displayed by two identical bodies which have equal load histories. A steady-state value is obtained for the parameter for cases of steady-state creep and is shown to be related to the standard path-independent integral for macroscopic self-similar crack growth under mode I conditions. A finite element model is developed for viscoplastic material models, using an initial strain approach with steps in a size employed in tangent stiffness methods.

Case Study of Risk Mitigation Based on Hardware/Software Integration (HSI) Testing for the International Space Station (ISS) Node 2 Module

Within the pressurized elements of the International Space Station (ISS), requirements exist to ensure a safe, habitable environment for the crew. In order to provide this environment, thermal control components work in conjunction with software controls to provide heat rejection for subsystem avionics equipment, for the environmental control system and for experiment payloads. It is essential to ISS operations, mission success and crew safety that necessary testing incorporates the extreme conditions to ensure proper performance. This paper provides a general description and methodology applied to thermal related Hardware/Software Integration (HSI) tests for the ISS Node 2 module. A detailed test plan was developed and implemented with two objectives: the first was for risk mitigation of the thermal control algorithms and software qualification, and the second was for data collection which will substantiate thermalhydraulic models of the Internal Active Thermal Control System (IATCS). Analytical models are utilized to determine on-orbit performance for conditions and scenarios where the simulation of actual on-orbit system performance is limited by test configuration constraints. Node 2 IATCS HSI activities were performed at the Alenia Spazio facility in Torino, Italy with participation from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Alenia Spazio, Jacobs Engineering Sverdrup (JE Sverdrup) and Boeing.

Technology Integration (Task 20) Aeroservoelastic Modeling and Design Studies: Evaluation of Aeroservoelastic Effects on Flutter and Dynamic Gust Response - Part A

The HSCT Flight Controls Group has developed longitudinal control laws, utilizing PTC aeroelastic flexible models to minimize aeroservoelastic interaction effects, for a number of flight conditions. The control law design process resulted in a higher order controller and utilized a large number of sensors distributed along the body for minimizing the flexibility effects. Processes were developed to implement these higher order control laws for performing the dynamic gust loads and flutter analyses. The processes and its validation were documented in Reference 2, for selected flight condition. The analytical results for additional flight conditions are presented in this document for further validation.

UAS Integration in the NAS: Encounter Rate Simulation Study with UAS Missions

This study investigates the effects that different parameters of a given well clear metric has on the rate of well clear violations (WCV) in Class E airspace. The proposed metrics are taken from variations on methods used by TCAS IIand also considers different alerting schemes against the well clear metric. This presentation is divided into three analysis. The first analysis presented investigates the effect of well clear definitions on the rate of WCV occurrence. The second analysis characterises encounters at the WCV and the third analysis evaluates the alerting threshold definition and criteria. This study should inform refinement of an appropriate definition of well clear for UAS sense and avoid systems and motivate further research on exploring alerting definitions and criteria for a given well clear definition.

Storage Requirements for Grid Integration of Marine Renewable Energy - a Parametric Study

Marine resources such as waves and tides house immense potential to serve as energy-rich sources of renewable power generation. They are known to be highly available, persistent and predictable in nature. Therefore, these can serve as one of the critical components for a primarily renewable energy-driven, resilient and robust future power grid. Although some inherent temporal characteristics of these resources lend themselves favorably to potential grid applications, the inclusion of storage allows the benefits and value streams to become realized more fully. In this paper, we present a framework for assessing impact of marine energy resources inclusion on the overall load generation balance and its impact on the relevant storage requirements to obtain the desired level of renewable energy penetration. From this study, we can critically infer two main points - (a) the relative storage requirements for grid operations with and without marine energy, and (b) the avoided cost of storage by including marine energy into the generation mix. We demonstrate our framework for two different locations across the United States.
