Introduction to the Special Issue on Software Tools for Quantum Computing: Part 1

Quantum computing is emerging as a remarkable technology that offers the possibility of achieving major scientific breakthroughs in many areas. Here, by leveraging the unique features of quantum mechanics, quantum computers may be instrumental in advancing many areas, including science, energy, defense, medicine, and finance. This includes solving complex problems whose solution lies well beyond the capacity of contemporary and even future supercomputers that are based on conventional computing technologies. As a foundation for future generations of computing and information processing, quantum computing represents an exciting area for developing new ideas in computer science and computational engineering.

Fission Battery Initiative: Research and Development Plan

The Fission Battery Initiative has been established by the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate [6] to define, focus, and coordinate research and development (R&D) of technologies that can fully achieve battery-like functionality for nuclear energy systems. The notion of a “fission battery” conveys a vision focused on realizing very simple “plug-and-play” nuclear systems that can be integrated into a variety of applications requiring affordable, reliable energy in the form of electricity and/or heat and function without operations and maintenance staff. In order to formalize the desired functionality, the initiative has adopted the following key attributes to be achieved: economic, standardized, installed, unattended and reliable

2024 OES-Environmental 2024 State of the Science Report, Chapter 11: Summary and Path Forward

The 2024 State of the Science report has brought together the most up-to-date information on potential environmental effects of marine renewable energy (MRE) development on marine animals, habitats, and ecosystem processes, as well as social and economic systems, using information that is publicly available as well as expert input. The report has been reviewed by over 56 experts. The reviewers provided in excess of one thousand comments during the drafting of the report that have been addressed in this version. The OES-Environmental country representatives from the 16 participating countries helped to scope the entirety of the report and provided valuable contributions to all chapters. The input from these contributors and reviewers has resulted in the most complete compendium of research and monitoring findings possible. While there is new and exciting research underway that should further illuminate the risks of MRE stressor-receptor interactions in the near future, suppositions and incomplete results from unpublished studies were not included in order to maintain the integrity, and decrease the uncertainty, of the messages in this report

Bridging the length scales in ionic separations via data-driving machine learning

We pursued a data science driven machine learning (ML) approach that blended molecular scale attributes informed from molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and materials properties to the selectivity and energy efficiency in targeted ionic separations using electric fields. The model mixtures investigated for ionic separations are pH sensitive and include organic acids, silica and boron, transition metals, such as copper and chromium. There were two major research thrusts of this project. Firstly, we investigated surrogate models and deep learning that relate material chemistries and structures to selective transport of ionic species under applied electric fields. Secondly we investigated how the bipolar junction interfacial design and water dissociation catalyst in bipolar membranes affect reverse bias polarization behavior and pH modulation in deionization platforms as a function of the platform operating parameters (e.g., cell voltage, residence time, and salt feed concentration). As a result of this work, we also were able to start a new direction, namely ML models for molecular design of surfactants.
