An empirical model of the Venusian outer environment. I - The shape of the dayside solar wind-atmosphere interface. II - The shape and location of the bow shock

Solar wind plasma and magnetic field data and ionospheric data obtained from the Pioneer Venus orbiter are discussed. The variation in the magnetic field pressure within the magnetic barrier is shown to be similar to that expected for the solar wind pressure variations along an obstacle's boundary when a more realistic approximation of the shape of the ionosphere is included. Simultaneous solar wind pressure, ionospheric pressure, and magnetic barrier pressure data reveal that the ionospheric pressure below the ionopause is approximately equal to the solar wind pressure. The magnetic barrier pressure is found to be equal to approximately 2/3 to 3/4 of both the solar wind pressure and the ionospheric pressure. Estimates of the hot plasma pressure contribution to the total pressure in the magnetic barrier vary from 1/4 to 1/3. Just below the ionopause the ionospheric pressure deviations from the mean ionospheric pressure are significant, especially below approximately 400 km; they appear to be indicative of the adjustment of the ionospheric structure to changeing solar wind conditions. A first-order model of the ionopause pressure variations as a function of height and solar-zenith angle is proposed. Venera 9 and Venera 10 bow shock crossings are then analyzed for solar zenith angles in the range from approximately 25 deg to approximately 153 deg. A comparison of Venera 9 and Venera 10 bow shock crossings with those observed by the Pioneer Venus orbiter suggests that both the secular variation and the latitudinal asymmetry may be responsible for the closer shock crossings of the Venera 9 and Venera 10 spacecraft.

Solar Cycle Variation in the Inner Zone Proton Belt Configuration

This paper presents a novel method of demonstrating atmospheric scale-height effects on energetic trapped protons. We have been using 2-D cross correlations as a powerful method of assessing the role of the trapped energetic protons in producing various effects in low altitude satellite systems. The method has permitted us to directly measure the drift of the particle South Atlantic Anomaly (due to the secular variation in the geomagnetic field) as a function of altitude and proton energy and to estimate the energy of the particles causing those effects. We have also been able to address minor artifacts in the AP82 model, itself. In this paper, we show that the technique is sufficiently powerful to address the variation in the inner zone energetic proton environment which occurs as a function of the solar cycle.

Highlights of Part I: Propagation Through Mars Environment: Propagation through Mars Environment - Part 1

We recommend using the dayside Martian ionosphere as a reflector for global communication, because it has a stable density peak and usable critical frequency. This is very crucial for the future Mars ground to ground communication. The dayside ionosphere has been well modeled as a Chapman layer. We suggest performing the Martian nightside ionosphere modeling study. Because the nightside ionosphere has very little measurements available, we propose to drop a digital ionosound instrument into the Mars surface for data collection. Even though the Martian tropospheric radio refractivity had a small value, it still can cause ray bending and multipath effects. We recommend performing an accurate calculation on excess phase and group delays (range and time delays). Other effects, such as range rate errors, appearance angle deviation, defocusing loss on Mars, etc. should be estimated. Ice depolarization effects due to Martian clouds on radio waves are unknown yet, but they are expected to be small, because of lower optical depth and the thinner layer of cloud. Total Martian atmospheric gaseous attenuation is expected to be less than 1 dB on microwaves and, because the Martian atmosphere had very low concentration in uncondensed H2O and O2. An accurate calculation for zenith opacity requires the information about scale heights of H2O and O2 distribution. An accurate water vapor altitude profile at Mars is not available et. Under the normal condition, CO2 and N2 gases ddo not have electric or magnetic dipoles and do not absorb electromagnetic energy from the waves. However, they may generate the dipoles through a collision and interact with waves under a high density condition and absorb electromagnetic waves in the infrared and visible band. Dust storm is the most dominant factor on the radio wave attenuation. Large Martian dust storms can cause at least 3 dB or higher loss to Ka band wave. For a normal dust storm, the attenuation is about 1 dB. The attenuation much depends on dust mass loading, dust size distribution, etc. Most large dust storms occur in the southern hemisphere during later spring and early summer when the southern hemisphere becomes suddenly hot.

CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition1)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_Terra-FM2-MODIS_Edition2A)
